WORSHIP ATTENDANCE
IN SEPTEMBER AND OCTOBER 2014
The Worship of God is the central act in our
life together with Jesus Christ. The writer to the
Hebrews reminds us to not neglect the habit of
meeting together so that we may be stirred up to
love and good works!.
Come to worship and bring others that we might be
stirred up together through the Holy Spirit! See you at
worship!

Dear Brothers and
Sisters, Members and
Friends of the Hill United
Presbyterian Church:

November brings with it our
national holiday of giving thanks for
the blessings that we do have in our
lives.
In a former Pastorate, one of our
church members loved the gospel
song, Count Your Blessings.
One of the stanzas to that song
reads this way:
When upon lifes billows you are
tempest-tossed, when you are
discouraged, thinking all is lost, count
your many blessings, name them one
by one, and it will surprise you what
the Lord hath done!
This gospel song echoes the
words of Paul in 1 Thessalonians 5:
16-18 Rejoice always, pray
constantly, give thanks in all
circumstances; for this is the will of
God in Christ Jesus for you.
In our stewardship of this life
through our time, talent, and
treasure, what a tremendous blessing
to serve our Lord Jesus Christ.
Happy Thanksgiving and the
grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be
with you!

Stewardship Emphasis Time
and 2015 Stewardship Campaign

Abundant Giving
Dear Friends,
By now you should have received the 2015 stewardship letter and pledge form. Our 2015 stewardship
message comes from 2 Corinthians 9:6-8 and reads: The point is this: the one who sows sparingly will
also reap sparingly, and the one who sows bountifully will also reap bountifully. Each of you must give as
you have made up your mind, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. This
lesson challenges us to recognize that we have been abundantly blessed by God and thereby, through the
Grace of God, can give abundantly to meet the needs of others.
As in past years our stewardship emphasis time started with leadership giving by members of the Session
and Board of Deacons. Our church leaders pledged a total of $51,260.00 to support the ministries and
programs of Hill Church for 2015. And as of October 29, 2014 additional pledges totaling $81,332.00 have
been received from other members of our Hill Church family of faith for a combined total of $132,592.00.
If you have not already done so, please prayerfully consider how you can support the mission and
ministries of Hill Church. Please complete the pledge form that came with your stewardship message and
return it in the envelope provided. If you have misplaced your pledge form you may use the form included
with this newsletter article. You may return your pledge form by mailing it to the church office or placing
it in the offering plate during worship.
During the next two months the Session will continue our stewardship emphasis and prepare the 2015 Hill
Church budget. We are hopeful that even in these challenging times you and your family will continue to
share your time, talent and treasure, giving abundantly as God has given to you.
Thank you for honoring God through your support of the ministries and mission of Hill Church. Your
generosity makes all the difference!
The Stewardship and Mission Support Committee

Cookbooks
Last year at the Womens
Luncheon, we had a wonderful
variety of salads, which prompted some of the
women to think we should be sharing those recipes.
The result is that the Presbyterian Women are
looking for your recipes for a new cookbook. Start
thinking of your favorite recipes that were not
included in our 2002 cookbook. Forms will be
included for your use in the Sunday Bulletins
beginning November 2nd. Our deadline to submit
recipes will be December 14th. We know that some
of the fellas in the church enjoy cooking and/or
baking. Wed be happy to get your recipes also.
We expect to have the books for sale in the Spring
of 2015.

HARVEST HOME 2014

It is that time of year when the
Deacons will be collecting food for the
community for the Thanksgiving season. The food
will be distributed through Covenant Cupboard in
time for the November holiday. For three weeks
food will be collected in the southeast corner of
the sanctuary near the organ. The following are
suggestions of food items by weeksthough it's
not a strict guideline, just a suggestion.

It is the Deacons hope that our congregation will
continue to be generous in bringing in food items
and/or money donations to support our Harvest
Home Project, and as a result, benefit Covenant
Cupboard.

November 2: Canned and jarred foods;
vegetables, fruits, soup, jelly, spaghetti sauce,
tuna, salmon, peanut butter, beef stew, pumpkin.

November 9: Boxed and bagged food; flour,
sugar, macaroni and cheese, pancake mix, cereals,
rice, cake mixes, pie mixes, crackers.

November 16: Three-pound bags of apples and
five pound bags of potatoes which require the
least cold storage time. Other fresh vegetables
and fruits cannot be collected due to the lack of
cold storage areas.

Yellow Ribbon Girls
Not far from here in Ellwood City are three sisters who started this organization after their brother
was deployed as part of Operation Iraqi Freedom in 2003. Each month they send care packages to
men and women serving overseas. Their organization is run 100% by donations from groups, individuals, and
businesses. Some of the items sent are writing paper, pens, envelopes, hard candy, travel size toilet paper,
toothbrushes, toothpaste, dental floss, foot powder, saline nasal spray, eye drops, hand sanitizer, baby wipes,
hand lotion, feminine hygiene products, chap stick, disposable razors, tissues, soap, hairbrushes, combs, wash
clothes, socks, powder drink mixes, microwave popcorn, beef jerky, instant coffee, creamer, packs of
crackers, and packs of cookies. For more ideas or ways to get involved, contact Andy Chaff or visit
their website at www.yellowribbongirls.com. There is a box in the Overflow for donated items.
GHANA MISSION TASK FORCE REPORT

Bernard Daddy, Chairperson of the Bubiashie Scholarship Committee is in the midst of
selecting students for the current academic year. We should be hearing of these results by
year-end. Stay tuned.

Joshua Heikklila, the PC(USA) mission co-worker in West Africa, writes to tell us about the many problems
which in his opinion are related to poverty. There is a lack of affordable health care, so people suffer from
illness. Income from farming or work in the market is not enough to take care of basic needs like food, shelter,
and clothing. Students struggle to raise fees for school, and even after graduation jobs are still hard to come
by. Because there is little recourse through other means people turn to prayer, and they pray fervently.

You can see where our scholarship effort at Hill Church addresses one of the many ailments of Ghana. Thanks
to you, the Hill Church members, and thanks be to God.

The next item of business for the Task Force will be in early November when we prepare Christmas greetings
to send to students and key persons in the Bubiashie District. Meantime, with Christmas getting closer,
consider a scholarship fund contribution to honor a family member or a friend instead of a material gift.

Please keep the Bubiashie District churches, Bernard Daddy, chairperson of the Bubiashie Scholarship
Committee, as well as the students in your prayers. Also pray for resolution to the Ebola health crisis in West
Africa.

ITS SHOEBOX TIME!
Our Church will once again be collecting filled shoeboxes for girls and boys for
Operation Christmas Child. We will have more information in an upcoming
Church bulletin insert about ideas for filling the shoeboxes with goodies for needy
children, or you can visit the Operation Christmas child website at www.samaritanspurse.org/
occ for ideas, boy and girl box labels, and an informative video. All shoe boxes need to be collected on or
before November 23rd to make sure that the children receive them in time for Christmas. If shopping and
filling shoeboxes are not for you, we will also accept monetary donations.

Christmas is about sharing the gift of God's Son, Jesus Christ, with the world. Operation Christmas Child
brings joy and hope to poor children around the world through gift-filled shoe boxes and the Good News of
Gods love. You can share Gods love with needy children in Honduras, Kosovo, or another country by
participating with other members of our church. You can start by filling out and coloring the enclosed letter
to put in the shoebox. Also consider if you want your shoebox to go to a boy or girl and what age group for
which you would like to buy. Wrap the lid and the bottom of your shoebox in colorful Christmas paper, and
look for a brochure in church or visit the website www.samaritanspurse.org/occ for gift ideas to fill your
box.
Don't forget to bring your shoe box gift to church on or before Sunday,
November 23, 2014. What a perfect gift to give in honor of Jesus' birthday!
