edition 4
November 2014
Welcome to the November 2014 edition of A View From Aloft! Although the
sailing season has ended for this year, were keeping our eyes on the horizon as
we prepare for Spring 2015. BaySail continues to provide amazing educational
opportunities for learners of all ages. Weve successfully introduced an array of
new programs onboard the Appledore IV and our first annual fundraiser Summer
Breeze was the hit of the summer in downtown Bay City. We look forward to
making the 2015 season our best yet.
Please enjoy A View From Aloft November 2014 and remember to keep an eye
out for our next edition in February 2015!

The fall weather is officially upon us and teachers and students across Michigan
have been back to school for nearly two months. A return to the classroom means the
return of SCIENCE UNDER SAIL and HISTORY UNDER SAIL onboard Appledore IV. This
fall BaySail welcomed students from Grand Blanc High School, Au Gres-Sims and Arthur
Hill High School. Weve also welcomed other groups such as the Flint Islamic Center,
Bay-Arenac ISD Ag-Science Class and the Mid-Michigan Community College Students
of Promise onboard for SCIENCE UNDER SAIL and HISTORY UNDER SAIL programs.
In late September, a group from Ohio State University used Appledore IV as a venue
to observe Phragmites along the Saginaw River. They were tasked with identifying an

One of the most frequent
questions we get asked by passengers
is if the Appledore is taken out of the
water for winter. With a steel hull,
Appledore IV has no
issues withstanding even
the harshest of winters
in the Saginaw River.
Although she spends
nearly all of her time
in the water, every US
vessel that is certified for
passenger service on the
Great Lakes must come
out of the water every 5
years. This October was
Appledore IVs turn to
leave the water and be
inspected by US Coast
Guard officials. While
she is in dry dock, other
maintenance work can be
completed.
To get Appledore IV
out of the water a crew
of seven sailed her north
170nm to Cheboygan MI;
the nearest port with the
facilities to lift her. We
are the largest, heaviest, and deepest
drafting vessel the facility hauls out.
We know their lift can handle the
weight, but low water levels can pose
a challenge while putting the lifting
straps under the ship. This year,
higher water levels were a welcome
relief. When Appledore IV was hauled
out in 2009, lower lake levels required
some deckhand heroics to get the job
done. With the keel touching the mud,
crewmembers Bryan Grusecki and
Steve Karcharski dove
10 feet down into the 55
degree water to dig out
the mud and drag the
lifting straps under by
hand.
Walstrom Marine
will use sandblasting
to remove loose paint
on the hull. Then the
boatyard crew - Kathleen
Harvey, Peter Tunstall,
Captain David Leanza
and volunteers - will
spend 2 weeks painting
the hull below and above
the waterline, refinishing
the main boom and
completing other
projects. We plan to have
Appledore IV back in the
water on November 1st
and headed south to Bay
City where she will be
docked for the winter.

affected area and proposing a design to rid the area of these invasive species. Phragmites, also known as common
reed, is a perennial wetland grass. With heights up to 15 feet, Phragmites degrade wetland and coastal areas by
crowding out native plants and animals. You can learn more about Phragmites here.
Program dates are already beginning to fill up for next spring. If you are a teacher or know a teacher who
might be interested in bringing a classroom onboard, please contact the BaySail office. SCIENCE UNDER SAIL and
HISTORY UNDER SAIL programs will be delivered from Bay City starting May 11, 2015. A SCIENCE UNDER SAIL
program provides students with the opportunity to experience place-based STEM education that extends beyond
the classroom walls. HISTORY UNDER SAIL is the perfect program to bring early Michigan history to life for students.
Are you interested in becoming a volunteer educator? Each season we recruit volunteer educators to help deliver
BaySails educational programs aboard Appledore IV. Programs happen most frequently in the spring (May June)
and in the fall (September October) from Monday Friday. A general understanding of basic scientific knowledge,
a passion for educating and a positive attitude are essential! If youre interested in becoming a BaySail volunteer
educator, please contact us.

Your tall ship, the schooner
Appledore IV, has been very
busy in 2014. Shes traveled to
Cheboygan, Detroit, Mackinaw
Island, Monroe, Tawas and
Cleveland. Shes carried artists
and farmers, educators and
researchers, state officials
and politicians. But the most
important passengers to board
Appledore IV are her students
more than 1,650 in 2014 alone.
At BaySail, were always
looking for new and interesting
ways to expand program
offerings that allow us to reach
new audiences. Programs like the
Plein Air Art Discovery Cruises,
supported by a grant from the
Michigan Council for Art and
Cultural Affairs, introduced our
ship and our organization to
painters and other artists from as
far away as Tawas and Gladwin.
Windward Bound Scouts has
generated interest from scout
troops as far away as Ohio. Its
a great marriage between our
traditional sail training program
and traditional scout camping
experiences that provides
Appledore IV an opportunity
to offer day sail trips for a few
weekends on Tawas Bay.
Adding new programs and
expanding audience/customer
base is vital for any organization
or business. We will always keep
our eyes open for any relevant
opportunity, but we will never
turn our back on the program
that is at the heart of our
organization: SCIENCE UNDER
SAIL. Thats not to say that even
our best program doesnt need
to be tweaked now and again. We
just finished a marathon brain-
storming session with volunteer
teachers and members of the
BaySail Education Committee
that generated a number of
really exciting suggestions for
enhancing SCIENCE UNDER
SAIL.
So while our Captain and
crew will work over the cold
winter months to perform
general maintenance and
spruce up our ship, our staff
and volunteers will likewise
perform general maintenance
and spruce up our programming
because we are committed to
providing some of the best and
most unique environmental
education opportunities in the
Great Lakes. Your support makes
this commitment possible. Those
who benefit most from your
investment in BaySail are the
students who develop a new
appreciation for our natural
resources and the Great Lakes
after experiencing a program
aboard Appledore IV.
On behalf of the more than
1,650 students who sailed with
us this year, please accept our
sincere thanks for your support
of BaySail and its programs in
2014. As you review your own
busy calendar and plan for the
rest of 2014, we hope that you
remember BaySail and include
us in your year-end giving.
