NOVEMBER
T I C K E T S , T I ME S , A ND D E T A I L S AT
D R A F T H OU S E . C OM
LOGANS RUN (1976)
Sure, some of the elements are cheesy and dated, like those
unisex costumes and shopping-mall-of-the-future scenery, but
this slice of dystopian 70s sci-f is still thought-provoking and
massively entertaining -- right up there with PLANET OF
THE APES. The story is set in a gleaming distant future where
humanity has taken refuge in massive domed cities where they
live lives of infnite leisure and pleasure. The catch? No one is
allowed to live past the age of 30. 11/4
V FOR VENDETTA (2005)
Remember, remember, the ffth of November V combines
larger than life action with a real, timely political message.
Written by the Wachowskis and directed by James McTeigue,
the second unit director of the MATRIX trilogy, V FOR VEN-
DETTA adapts Alan Moore and David Lloyds groundbreaking
comic book series. Well be handing out Guy Fawkes masks at
this screening, so you can protest tyranny in style. 11/5
SOYLENT GREEN (1973)
There are those movies that are so iconic, so grand and so
beautiful that spoiling anything about it would be a crime to
humanity. This is one of those movies. A flm over 40 years old
and I still hesitate to proclaim one of the greatest reveals ever.
As secretive as Rosebuds true meaning, as mysterious as Va-
ders paternity and as menacing as Kaiser Solze identity. What is
the secret of Soylent Green? 11/6
Girlie Night:
13 GOING ON 30 (2004)
Hollywood fnally decided to make BIG for girls. Dont get us
wrong, it was awesome to watch Tom Hanks spend his pay-
check on video games and a penthouse with a trampoline, but
now it was a gals turn to live the dream, and Jennifer Garner
did not disappoint. This flm features the greatest fantasies of a
13-year-old girl: a makeover montage in a gigantic closet, a high
power job working at a fashion magazine, a massive slumber
party and, of course, a totally cute guy. This delightful cinematic
concoction is better than a pack of Razzles, so join us at Girlie
Night, where well all experience the thrill of being thirty, firty
and thriving. 11/10
Anime at The Alamo:
HELLSING ULTIMATE 9&10 (2014)
Alucard awakens and his thirst for vengeance is stronger
than ever. This anarchist must use everything in his mythical
repertoire to show that his bite is far worse than an army of
snarling Nazi werewolves. As he absorbs every drop of blood
in sight, all begin to realize that the ultimate slaughter might be
too much to handle even for the deadliest of demonic slayers.
11/10
MAD MAX 2: THE ROAD WARRIOR (1981)
Mad Max burned rubber across the scorched highways of the
barren Earth, on the hunt for fuel and the blood of criminal
marauders. Even in the Australian desert, some shotgun-wield-
ing punk goon needs to be murdered every 30 seconds or so.
Easy work for Max, until he runs up against post-nuke hellmas-
ter Lord Humungus and his crew of feral mohawked wasteoids.
Suddenly, the lone wolf of the wasteland fnds himself defend-
ing the last outpost of untarnished humanity. What follows
is in-arguably the single greatest chase/fght/stunt explosion
ever captured on flm, with more car-fipping and stuntman-
smashing than any 1000 American action blockbusters could
dream of. Come witness the absolute ultimate in fallen world
annihilation with THE ROAD WARRIOR! 11/13
THE FIFTH ELEMENT (1997)
Nothing tops a cocksure-as-ever Bruce Willis as a retired elite
commando being pulled out of retirement to defend the Earth
from ABSOLUTE EVIL. Tiny Lister plays the hugest black
president ever (long before being a black president was cool),
and Gary Oldman goes for broke in one of his wackiest perfor-
mances ever. ANDif thats not enough, you got Chris Tucker
in a rare non-Rush Hour role. Oh...and Milla Jovovichs as an
ass kicking heroin/ultimate weapon of destruction. 11/23
Video Vortex:
DROID (1988)
In 1987, adult flmmaker Philip OToole made an ambitious
post-apocalyptic sci-f porno with a video camera. It was called
CABARET SIN. The movie had plywood spaceships, men
with Christmas lights for eyes, and a C-3PO knockoff named
Rochester, who wore a red jumpsuit and a beanie. The movie
also had a little man with a Pee-Wee Herman doll on his shoul-
der. In 1988, the hardcore sex was removed from CABARET
SIN and it was sold to sci-f fans on home video as DROID.
This fact simultaneously explains a lot and very little. Edited
by someone with a maximum attention span of eight seconds,
DROID is a black-hole of irrational ideas, disassociating visu-
als, and coked-out New Wave musical interludes. Basically, this
is what happens when a porn director gets inspired by STAR
WARS and BLADE RUNNER, but only has $5. If you love
STAR WARS, then youll love DROID! VHS-only insanity
projected from VHS for only one buck! 11/12
WHIP IT NOVA Roller Derby Fundraiser (2009)
The directorial debut of Drew Barrymore, stars Ellen Page
as Bliss, a rebellious Texas teen who throws in her small town
beauty pageant crown for the rowdy world of roller derby.
Marcia Gay Harden plays Bliss disapproving mother, while
Kristen Wiig and Juliette Lewis play roller-derby stars. The
NOVA Roller Derby will be on hand to introduce the screening
and throw a killer after party at Glass Half Full. Join us or face
a hip check! A portion of the nights proceeds from the flm and
Glass Half Full will go to the Leagues fundraising efforts. 11/3
DARK CITY (1998)
Stylish flm noir and insane pre-Matrix sci-f from director Alex
Proyas, DARK CITY was a pretty big disappointment when
it frst debuted at the box offce back in 98. People werent
ready to give up their grip on reality just yet. But like BLADE
RUNNER time has been kind to DARK CITY as an entire
generation has found it through home video and repeterory
screenings. A cult has risen up and now DARK CITY is almost
essential viewing for awesome things to come out of the 90s.
11/18
NIGHT OF THE COMET (1984)
One week before October 31, a mysterious corporation
unveils DAWN OF THE DEAD meets VALLEY GIRL in the
ultimate 1980s teenage apocalypse! The people of all nations
gather to witness the passing of a majestic comet through the
night sky. One hour later, humanity has been reduced to red
calcium dust...with the exception of Hollywood High School
sisters Reggie and Samantha. The few other survivors are fesh-
eating wasteoids, Santa-suited twits or merciless subterranean
researchers scrambling for live test subjects. This leaves our
heroines with an important question: can they machine-gun
enough rotting cannibals and government goons to make it to
the mall? 11/25
T.HANKSGIVING
November is a month to give Thanks. T.Hanks that is.
Join us in a celebration of the greatest product that Hollywood
has ever produced. All month long The Late Show Presents
T.HanksGiving. Every Saturday at 10:30p
We decided to look at the man, the myth, the legend from his
early beginnings of comedy. We all know the man can act his
way out of a hostage crisis or save Matt Damon from a bunch
of Nazis. We want to remember our favorite Bossom Buddy...
sorry Peter Scolari. We want to remember the man that made us
laugh every year from 1986 - 1990. This is T.HanksGiving.
THE BURBS (1989)
THE BURBS, one of the most hilarious horror/comedies of
the 80s, remains the only major Hollywood studio comedy
about suburban cannibalism! Hanks and Joe Dante led unsus-
pecting audiences into a deeply bizarre cul de sac of fesh-eat-
ing, body-thieving and suspected demonology, all with a banana
peel slapstick fair that made everything feel as good-timey as an
ice cream picnic with grandma. 11/1
BIG (1988)
A young boy makes a wish at a carnival machine to be big. He
wakes up the following morning to fnd that it has been granted
and his body has grown older overnight. But he is still the same
12-year-old boy inside. Now he must learn how to cope with
the unfamiliar world of grown-ups including getting a job and
having his frst romantic encounter with a woman. What will he
fnd out about this strange world? 11/8
SERENITY Quote-Along (2005)
Serenity is a spaceship full of perpetually on the run renegades
lead by the roguish Captain Malcolm Reynolds (the spectacu-
larly charming Nathan Fillion) who will do anything for cash.
After being on the losing side of a civil war, Reynolds and his
crew will smuggle, cheat and steal to keep their lives simple and
off the grid. That is until one day when a routine transport of
a brother and his sister turn the crew of Serenity into the most
sought after folks in the galaxy. For the Quote-Along, well have
cap guns so you can shoot at the Reavers, Serenity ships for
everyone to pilot in the air like were all a leaf on the wind, and
tissues well use every time Joss kills someone hes made us fall
in love with. 11/17 & 11/19
SOUTH PARK: BIGGER, LONGER & UNCUT Sing-Along
(1999)
After only three seasons of SOUTH PARK on Comedy
Central, Trey Parker and Matt Stone had the balls to think they
could bring their poorly animated, foul mouthed Colorado kids
to the big screen. And they were fucking right! Paramount at
one point asked them if they could make a PG-13 flm instead
of the hard R that this was sure to receive, but they steadfastly
refused and in so doing they created the best selling R-rated
animated feature ever. 11/24 & 11/26
THE MONEY PIT (1986)
Tom Hanks and Shelley Long dive head frst into a hopelessly
dilapidated house in need of serious repair. The house compris-
ing of collapsing stairs, holes in foors and leaky roofs provides
a comedic playground for Mr. Hanks and his DIY everyman
sensibility. 11/15
DRAGNET (1987)
Acting as both a parody of and homage to the long-running
television series, Aykroyd plays Joe Friday (nephew of the origi-
nal series star) while Hanks plays Pep Streebek, his new partner.
Harry Morgan reprises his role from the television series as Bill
Gannon, now a Captain and Fridays and Streebeks boss. 11/22
JOE VERSUS THE VOLCANO (1990)
Its a movie unlike anything youve seen before, its a movie
that takes chances. Its at times dark, bleak, full of wonder,
spectacular wit, insane turns and heart bursting romance. This
is a movie that takes you on an adventure and makes you giddy
with the excitement of what could come next. It lives in its
own world and creates its own rules and makes you believe in
fantasy again. It takes Joe to learn he is dying before fnding out
how to live and appreciate life, but thankfully Academy Award
winner John Patrick Shanley (Moonstruck) has provided you
with 100-minutes of cinematic bliss to remind you how good
life can be without all the terminal illness to bog you down. Lift
that brain-cloud from your life and set sail for high adventure
with plenty of orange soda for all. 11/29

BEST YEARS OF OUR LIVES (1946)
The frst of the now common homefront war flms fnds three
soldiers coming home to small town midwestern America after
WWII.
What follows is one of the best and most heartbreaking hu-
man dramas of all-time. A war flm without a single battle, a
cinematic story that didnt have a decent comparison piece
until decades later with COMING HOME and THE DEER
HUNTER.
THE BEST YEARS OF OUR LIVES was truly ahead of its
time in the medium of flm. Its direct, emotional, sentimental
without pandering.
Made during the peak of MGM in the 30s and 40s, BEST
YEARS remains one of the towering examples of the very best
the era had to offer
As part of the Alamo 100, this screening will feature free
collectible THE BEST YEARS OF OUR LIVES pins while
supplies last. 11/11
THE OVERNIGHTERS (2014)
In the tiny town of Williston, North Dakota, tens of thousands
of unemployed hopefuls show up with dreams of honest work
and a big paycheck under the lure of the oil boom. However,
busloads of newcomers chasing a broken American Dream step
into the stark reality of slim work prospects and nowhere to
sleep. The town lacks the infrastructure to house the overfow
of migrants, even for those who do fnd gainful employment.
Over at Concordia Lutheran Church, Pastor Jay Reinke is
driven to deliver the migrants some dignity. Night after night,
he converts his church into a makeshift dorm and counseling
center, opening the churchs doors to allow the Overnighters
(as he calls them) to stay for a night, a week or longer. They
sleep on the foor, in the pews and in their cars in the church
parking lot. Many who take shelter with Reinke are living on
societys fringes and with checkered pasts, and their presence
starts affecting the dynamics of the small community. The con-
gregants begin slinging criticism and the City Council threatens
to shut the controversial Overnighters program down, forcing
the pastor to make a decision which leads to profound conse-
quences that he never imagined.
A modern-day Grapes of Wrath, award-winning documentary
THE OVERNIGHTERS engages and dramatizes a set of uni-
versal societal and economic themes: the promise and limits of
re-invention, redemption and compassion, as well as the tension
between the moral imperative to love thy neighbor and the
resistance that one small community feels when confronted by
a surging river of desperate, job-seeking strangers. 11/14
