Senzo Meyiwa was a South African soccer player and captain of Orlando Pirates and Bafana Bafana. He won numerous trophies with Orlando Pirates including the Absa Premiership in 2010/11 and 2011/12. Meyiwa came up through the Orlando Pirates youth academy and made his professional debut with them in 2005. He went on to become captain of both Orlando Pirates and Bafana Bafana. Tragically, Meyiwa was shot and killed during a home robbery in 2014 at the young age of 27, cutting short a very promising career.

This is where he was scouted by Orlando Pirates Youth Academy coaches. He was then enrolled at Bophelo-Impilo School in Mayfair, Joburg, the school that was adopted by Pirates Career path 2005: Meyiwa and his Bophelo team became the rst Copa CocaCola Football Stars after they defeated Sofunda High from Middleburg in Mpumalanga in the nal. Sofunda had in their ensemble Happy Jele, who later became team-mates with Meyiwa at Pirates. The pair was part of the Copa Coca-Cola All Stars team that toured Barcelona later in the year. Meyiwa later graduated to the Pirates reserve side, Yebo Yes July 2005: Promoted to the Pirates senior team under then Bucs coach Kosta Papi 2004: Became the rst school captain to lift the rst Kay Motsepe Schools Cup. His performances led to him being called up to the schools national team United School Sports Association of SA (Ussasa) at the Africa Zone VI Ball Games in Zambia. The Ussasa team was coached by current Mamelodi Sundowns assistant coach Manqoba Mnqithi August 2006: Made his SA Under-20 debut as replacement for Itumeleng Khune in Amajitas 1-0 win over Zimbabwe in the African Championship qualiers. Meyiwa later became part of Steve Komphelas SA Under-23 squad that was preparing for the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games, which they failed to qualify for Senzo Meyiwa milestones 2002: Amajimbos coach Serame Letosaka called up Meyiwa for the SA Under-17s 2003: Kept goal for Bophelo in the MTN Under-16 Cup nal in September against Harmony Academy. He captained the school to a successful title defence the following year November 2006: Played his rst ofcial game for Pirates (guided by Milutin Sredojevi) in a 2-1 win over AmaZulu 2012: Former Pirates coach Roger de S installed Meyiwa as his rst-choice goalkeeper for the Buccaneers following injury to regular Moeneeb Josephs 2013: Then Bafana coach Gordon Igesund handed Meyiwa his rst cap in the SA senior squads 2-0 win over Lesotho in a friendly xture in Maseru. Meyiwa came on as a second-half substitute July 2014: Awarded the Pirates chairmans award and the golden glove accolade for keeping 10 clean sheets in 51 games (out of 53), conceding 45 in all competitions last season September 2014: Appointed Bafana captain by coach Shakes Mashaba for the Afcon qualier against Sudan in Khartoum. He played in all four qualiers without conceding October 18: Pirates coach Vladimir Vermezovi handed him the clubs captaincy in the league match against Free State Stars at Orlando Stadium, taking over from interim skipper Siyabonga Sangweni, who had stood for the original captain Lucky Lekgwathi October 25: Meyiwa played in his last game when he helped Pirates to a 4-1 win over Ajax Cape Town in the Telkom Knockout quarternals at Orlando Stadium. He was 27 years and 32 days old when he met his untimely death
