1. Installation Requirements
1 .l An example of layout
Figure 1 shows an example of layout when the EDX-700HSl800HS is placed on a
table. In the figure, a PC, printer and EDX-700HSl800HS are placed on the table of
1,800 (W) X 800 (D) X 700 mm (H).
The EDX main unit weighs approximately 80 kg. Place a table sturdy enough to load
the EDX main unit, PC and printer (min. withstand load: 120 kg).
The EDX-700HSl800HS requires space around its main unit for maintenance. As
shown in the example, place a movable PC and printer around the main unit. Also, keep
at least a 80 cm distance between the EDX main unit and the wall and units difficult to
move.
*
In case that a rotary pump is attached as an option
Place the rotary pump on a stable floor. The piping attached to the rotary pump
has a length of 1,500 mm and therefore, you must set the rotary pump on the floor
behind the table. Keep a 30 cm distance between the table rear panel and the wall.
CE type only .

permissible
40 to 70% (No condensation allowed)
Sturdy table or testing bench of about 1,800 (W) X 800 (D) X
700 mm (H) (min. withstand load: 120 kg). If the instrument
is provided with a rotary pump as an optional feature, keep at
least 30 cm space behind the table.
To assure optimum performance of the instrument, the
installation room should have less interfering elements like
heavy dust particles, vibration, electric magnetic field noise,
corrosive gases.
To keep its optimum performance, choose an installation
site taking the following points into account.
Do not subject the instrument to;
A strong magnetic field, electric field, or radio
frequency. (They may deteriorate analysis accuracy.)
Vibration
Heavy dust particles, much humidity and corrosive
gases
Direct sunlight and also,
Keep fluctuation of supply voltage to the minimum.
Secure the instrument as a countermeasure against
earthquake.
Ground the main unit appropriately to prevent
electrical accidents. (Grounding Workpiece
Regulations, Solid grounding: 100Q or less )
1.3 Power requirement
The instrument must be powered by power supply protected by a leakage breaker.
The EDX main unit of standard type requires power supply of 100 VAC, 15 A and
50160Hz (single phase). The EDX main unit of CE type requires power supply of
1000VA, 22012301240VAC and 50160Hz (single phase). Do not use other type power
supply for the instrument.
To assure its performance, the following stability is required for power supply:
voltage fluctuation of k 10% and frequency off 5%.
If power supply of the above specification is not available, the power supply facility
must be changed.
l .4 Refrigerant for a detector (Liquid nitrogen)
You need liquid nitrogen to cool a detector during operation of the instrument. Also,
you need tools to feed liquid nitrogen to the detector (liquid nitrogen container, take-out
unit (CRY0 JET) ). Have at hand the following or the equivalent.
Table 1.2 Tools To Supply Liquid Nitrogen (Recommended Units)
The numbers with * are Part Nos. from Shimadm.

Liquid nitrogen is liquid of extremely low temperature (-196C). You may get a
burn if the skin is exposed to it. Special care must be taken to handling of liquid
nitrogen.
Liquid nitrogen take-out unit
If you use it in a small room, be sure to ventilate the room well. Otherwise, you
may be suffocated by vaporized liquid gas.
Refer to the Instruction Manual, "Precautions on Safety Use", "4. Liquid
Nitrogen".

1.5 Helium gas
If the instrument is provided with an optional unit, He replacement measurement unit
P/N 212-22495, you need helium gas as replacement gas.
The required gas type, its purity and gas pressure are as follows. Gas and a pressure
governor are attached as standard features.
Table 1.3 Gas Specification and Pressure Governor
The numbers with * are Part Nos. from Shimadzu.
A piping unit (vinyl hose) between the helium gas cylinder and the EDX-7001800 is
included in the He replacement measurement unit.

If you place the gas cylinder outside of the room, you must lay another piping to a
place within 2.5 m radius of the instrument.
If you lay piping above, be careful about points below.
(a)
Use a stainless pipe for piping.
(b)
Be careful not to use a helium gas piping unit too narrow to feed the gas.
Generally, the required inner diameter of the piping unit is 6 mm, min.
(c)
At the end of the gas piping unit, attach a hose nipple (outer dia.: 6.5 to 7.0 mm)
which can accept the attached gas supply hose (inner dia.: 6.0 mm).
016-31329* Vinyl hose, length: 3.0 m 6mm X 2mm
Precautions on handling a high pressure gas cylinder
To a gas cylinder you will use, the High-pressure Gas Control Law is applied. Be sure
to observe the Law for use.
General precautions
1. The gas cylinder should be placed in a well-ventilated place not subjected to direct
sunlight and the gas should be introduced indoors through piping.
2. Do not allow ambient temperature to be higher than 40C, nor fire to enter a 2 m
radius of the cylinder.
3. When you use a high pressure gas, be sure to ventilate the site well and check for gas
leakage using soap-and-water solution before starting daily work. Particularly when you
use a combustible gas, NEVER smoke or use fire in a 5 m radius of the unit to use the
gas.
Also, the site should be provided with an effective fire extinguisher.
4. Secure the cylinder with rope or the like to prevent it from turning over or falling.
5. A pressure regulator must be one for which oil is not allowed to use. The gas goes
through its pipe and therefore, never use one of which pipe inner face is stained with oil.
6. On completion of use of the gas, close the main cock of the cylinder.
7. You are required to get a permission by the Law if you store cylinders of 300 m 3 or
more.
Refer to the High-pressure Gas Control Law, the Regulations for General
High-pressure Gas Safety and the Fire Laws.

l .2 Replacing the detector
1.2.1 Replacing the detector of EDX-700HS I 800HS
1. Open the cover of the analysis chamber and keep it open. The filter must be
a polymer filter.
2. Turn OFF the power, unplug the instrument and wait five minutes until the
detector high voltage is discharged.
3. Detach the right and left covers, rear panel, the cover of the upper part of the
Dewar.
Detach the detector connectors on the right face. (5 connectors)
Fig. 2.1
4. Detach a fixture of the Dewar receiver from the rear side.
5. Remove the PS Assy securing screws.
Fig. 2.2
6. Detach the PS Assy bracket (with a SW) and displace it together with the PS
Assy to the right. RA By doing this, the detector Assy becomes movable
backward.
7. Detach the liquid sample check proximity sensor together with the bracket.
8. Loosen the two detector securing bolts (M6) alternately.
Remove the bolts while supporting the detector to prevent it from falling.
(Keep the detector window cap in position, if possible. If the instrument is
provided with a He replacement unit, they are connected through piping each
other. Be sure to detach it.)
Fig. 2.3
9. Without giving a shock to the detector, slowly pull it out backward.
10. Detach the cover of a new detector and set it without giving damage to the
window (without touching it) as follows (use vacuum grease).
Be careful to prevent the pipe, wiring and other units from being caught.
Fig. 2.4
2 - 6
11. Set the new detector where the old detector was positioned.
As shown in the figure to the right, set each unit and lead in the detector
flange. Do not tighten the bolts excessively. Excessive tightening causes
abrasion of the 0 ring. Tighten the right and left bolts evenly.
/ Bushing
Fig. 2.5
12. Make the rear tank free and lead it in with the two bolts. Check that the
flange face is set in position stably. Secure the Dewar holding fixture at the rear
side so that it will support the Dewar without breaking it.
13. Secure the switch bracket and PS Assy.
14. Connect the detector and the connectors.
15. Mount the proximity sensor (with the window cap), sample plate and cover.
16. Check the degree of vacuum and put liquid nitrogen. After cooling is
complete, check for operation by carrying out an analysis.
2 - 7
Precautions on replacing the detector
If you replace the detector with the shutterlfilter, collimator and sample plate
removed, follow the steps below.
1. Do not remove the detector cap if possible.
Tape the hole at the center of the cap to prevent something from entering.
Fig. 2.7
2. If you must remove the cap to detach units, attach the cover to the detector
front face using corrugated board before starting the steps.
The cover must be at least 30 mm in dia. and 2 to 3 mm in thickness.
Attach the cover by aligning it with the center of the detector window.
Tape

1.2.2 Replacing the detector of EDX-9OOHS
Detector and control unit is adjusted together in the factory. So even though
detector unit or control unit has some troubles, exchange both detector and control
unit.
Notes about detector exchange:
1)
Registration of the Sensitivity Coefficient
2)
Remaking Calibration Curve (in the case of quantitative analysis using
Calibration Curve)
~~~~~
Step 1 for detector exchange
Follow the orders below.
1. Remove the left and right covers of EDX main body.
2. Remove the upper cover of control unit's upper part.
3. Remove the rear panel. If the EDX main unit is CE type, remove the SDT
3. Loosen the motor securing bolts (M4) and reduce the shaft-to-shaft distance.
4. Replace the belt with new one. Attach a new belt and slightly stretch it to a level
that it will not come out. Too tight stretching may give an excessive load to the motor,
causing step out and excessive abrasion.
5. Secure the motor and mount back the motor cover.
6. Initialize the instrument and check for operation.
7. Mount back the cover.
1.5 Replacing the belt for operating the cover
1. Have space under the instrument.
For example, place the instrument on a spacer as shown below.
Fig. 2.20
2. Raise the cover of the instrument and turn OFF the power.
Detach each of the right, left and front covers.
3. Loosen the bolts which secure the base with the front right cover operation motor
(induction). (If you press in the motor, the pulleys also move in. Accordingly, the belt
is loosened.)
4. Replace the belt being careful not to allow the right and left pulleys to rotate. Pull
the motor toward you and attach a new belt and stretch it. After that, tighten the bolts.
Check that the right and left lifts are positioned at a same distance from the
bearing face of the base. If there is a difference of 1 mm or more in distance, loosen
the belt and rotate the both pulleys until they come in position. After that, stretch the
belt.
5. Mount back the cover and check for operation.
2.6 Adjusting the turret stop position
Adjust the turret stop position when the turret bottom hole does not align with the
analysis window.
Fig. 2.34
1. Detach each of the right, left and front covers.
2. On the turret drive motor, two sensors are provided; the upper one is an
origin sensor and the lower one is a feed pitch sensor.
Here, the sector angle of the lower one should be adjusted.
Feed the turret through the "Manual Control" until the sector securing screw
comes to one pitch right to the sensor front face. (It should be next to the
origin.)
Fig. 2.35
3. Loosen the securing screw with the ball screwdriver. Displace the sector.
4. Feed it back one pitch, then feed it again and check the stop position.
5. Repeat the Steps 3 and 4 until the turret stops at the correct position. Secure
it at the correct position and secure the securing screw.
6. Initialize it and check that the it synchronizes the origin sensor. Mount back
the cover. If an origin error occurs, adjust the origin.
2.7 Adjusting the turret origin
If an origin error occurs at the time of initialization of the turret, adjust the origin
sensor.
1. Detach each of the right, left and front covers.
On the turret drive motor, two sensors are provided; the upper one is an
origin sensor and the lower one is a feed pitch sensor.
Here, the sector angle of the upper one should be adjusted.
2. First, disconnect the connector of the origin sensor S23 and insert
the short-circuit connector (dummy origin).
3. Carry out initialization. When doing this, Table No.1 is not always set for it
and therefore, bring it to the analysis position. Remove the short-circuit
connector and connect the cable connector CH1 1 to it to S23.
4. A disk is attached to the upper position. Immediately under it, the disk
securing screw (setscrew) is provided.
Two setscrews are accessible at positions of 30" to the right and 60" to the
left when the notch is positioned at the front.
Loosen them using the ball screwdriver and secure them at positions where
the LED 1 of the control PCB is turned ON.
Fig. 2.36
5. Check that the sensor is placed in position by the initialization. If an error
occurs, repeat the Steps 2 to 4 until the sensor comes to the correct position.
2.8 Checking the degree of vacuum
1. Click on the "Manual Control" of the "Maintenance" window.
2. After closing the cover, carry out evacuation.
3. If the analysis chamber is seasoned, the degree of vacuum will be recovered to 30
Pa or less within three minutes.
4. If it is not recovered, you must suspect that vacuum sealing of the recently
assembled or replaced units are not good enough. Disassemble and clean such units
and apply vacuum grease to them.
5. Also, if it has been exposed to the air for a long time, the degree
recovered easily. If it is not recovered to 30 Pal3 min. or
of vacuum is not
less even after
disassembling, cleaning and applying vacuum grease to the units above, carry out
continuous evacuation for about one hour and then try measurement again.
6. If the poor degree of vacuum is still resulted, turn OFF high voltage of the X-ray
detector and pour petroleum ether to locate a leaking position. Then, take a
corrective action.
<Adjusting the LLD on the EDX-800HS>
On the EDX-800HS, you should adjust the value of the LLD within 15 mV + 5
mV. Depending on the spectrum waveform of the carbon peak, decide a value to
set.
1. Measuring the PV ratio
Set the LLD at 10 mV and then, measure the PV ratio using styrene.
(Refer to "MaintenanceIAdjustment 5, Others 5.3 Checking the PV ratio".)
2. Calculating the LLD set voltage
Calculate the LLD set voltage depending on the energy position of the
valley of the obtained spectrum waveform.
For example, if the energy position of the valley is 200 eV, set LLD set
voltage at 20 mV, namely, LLD set voltage [mV] = Energy position of the
valley [eV]/10.
3. Setting the LLD
By adjusting the trimmer R2 of the MCA PCB, adjust a LLD set value to the
calculated value.
4. Checking the carbon peak
Checking the carbon peak using styrene.
5. Setting the LLD again
The adjustment is complete if a single peak is obtained just at the carbon
position (around 270 eV) of the obtained spectrum waveform and also
identified by the CKa marker.
If it is not a single peak or the peak form is not symmetric, adjust the LLD
p-
set value in increments/decrements of 2 mV until a single peak is obtained and
also identified by the CKa marker.
6. Printing and recording results
Print out the spectrum waveform of the carbon peak with the identified CKa
marker and record it with the waveform of which a PV ratio was measured.
7. Example of adjustment defect
7.1 The following causes should be suspected if the LLD set value is below
10 mV or over 20 mV.
7.1.1 The offset adjustment of the MCA PCB may have not been completed.
Readjust it and carry out energy calibration.
7.1.2 The energy calibration of the instrument may not have been completed.
Recalibrate it.
7.2 The following causes should be suspected if the PV ratio of the carbon
spectrum is poor.
7.2.1 The wiring inside the main unit is not correctly laid; particularly, the
wiring from 24 V and 5 V power supply units is sometimes laid under the
aluminurn housing of the detector or liquid nitrogen Dewar; or it may
touch the detector. In this case, the detector may be affected by power
noise, producing an abnormal carbon spectrum or poor PV ratio. Be sure
to secure the wiring away from the detector.
7.2.2 The instrument may be affected by external noise. Check that its cover
is correctly secured, it is appropriately grounded, and the computer is
powered from the service receptacle of the main unit. (A big grounding
wire loop makes the instrument be easily affected by noise.)
7.2.3 The detector is secured by a hexagon bolt. Its head may contact the
proximity sensor for liquid adaptor detection. Particularly, if the detector
is absorbed into the analysis chamber at the time of measurement in
vacuum, its head, which does not contact the sensor in atmosphere, may
contact it in vacuum. If it happens, the detector may be easily affected by
noise, resulting in an abnormal carbon spectrum. Slightly screw in the
bolt, displace the sensor, or wrap insulation tape around the sensor to
prevent it from contacting.
7.2.4 The high voltage connector (HV) fixing screw of the detector
preamplifier may be loosened.
7.2.5 The instrument becomes easily affected by noise sometimes, producing
an abnormal carbon spectrum. Tighten the fixing screw.
3.1.3 Checking adjustment of the offset level controller RI
In a custom-designed instrument for Canon Inc., the thickness of the Ni filter is
100um. The setting is set on the eu3 window. Refer to "Setting of environmental
setting eu3 at 2.5.2 installations" for the use of eu3.
There are about five instruments that are adopted lOOum for the Ni filter
besides custom-designed instruments for Canon Inc. in custom-designed HS
produced at the early times.
(The corresponding instruments are below. It is necessary to note the instruments
before and behind that for attention though it is considerably thought the accurate
intelligence. )
However, the lOOum filter absorbs X rays much stronger than the 20um filter.
So the intensity of X-rays may not be enough to measure Cd or Pb. We again
changed from the 100um filter to the 20um filter.
I think that there is a customer who changes the Ni filter from 100urn to 20um.
EDX-700 Q20741000446, 447
EDX-700 (request for price quotation HS specification) Q2234 100000 1-3
MO filter
The latter products of a standard type and HS use the MO filter instead of the
Polymer filter. Below instruments numbers display the numbers of the latter
products of a standard type.
a MCAPCB Assy
It is not possible to change a setting of an X-ray maximum output by using
software only. The ROM must be changed to raise the X-ray power. Confirm
using the upper table in the details. Therefore, if you exchange MCA PCB Assy,
the ROM loaded on the broken PCB may be used.
If the MCA PCB Assy of HS specification breaks down and the new MCA
PCB Assy loads the ROM of standard specification, the maximum output
becomes 50Wa25W regardless of the setting of the maximum output by eu3
(software).
Fan guard for tube cooling
If the X-ray output is 25W7 fan guard is none. If 45W, fan guard are the back
and forth (two places). If 50W, fan guard is the front, back, left and right (four
places). Adding fan guard raises the air volume. I think that you consent upper if
you see the instrument though it becomes such this expression in the word.
About the custom-designed instrument of EDX-900 for Canon Inc.
The following work is separately done compared with standard 900.
1)
To adjust the X-ray tube output to 50W or less, ROM is assumed to be
3.03B.
2)
The leakage inspection of X-rays is executed by 50W output.
3)
The added guards of right and left make the temperature raise of tube
cooled.
4)
A special inspection is executed. The calibration curve is made with the Cd
standard samples and the lower limit of detection is found. Moreover,
repeatability is confirmed.
5)
The result of a special inspection is appended to the device.
6)
The calibration curve group made at 4) is copied in the Device Information
sheet disk.
When installing, the inspection similar to 4) is done. So use the calibration
curve group then. Moreover, the data of the inspection in the factory becomes
reference when installing.
7)
X-ray output (50W) and filter (Ni:lOOum) are set by device environment
setting software, "eu3 " .
(When installing, it is necessary to set the setting of an X-ray output again.)
8)
Device type-identifier of the instrument number seal is assumed to be
custom-designed EDX-900 type.
About notes when installing
Using device environment setting software, "eu3" sets the maximum value of
X-ray output.
And, please confirm the kind and the thickness about the setting of the filter. (If
HS, the filter is MO and the thickness of Ni filter is 20um.)
See the "2.5.2 Environment utility "eu3" setting" about "eu3".
