African American Members of 114th Congress

November 7, 2014
What Do I Know blog
[Based on updating sitting African-American Congress Members and googling to find new
African-American members. There may be some people missing. Ill keep checking. Please let
me know if you find errors or omissions.]
Election results mostly from: LA Times election results page
Other results are from the Virgin Islands Voting results and District of Columbia Board of
Elections
Red indicates that an incumbent left Congress and was not replaced by an African American.
One term Congressman Steven Horsford of Nevada is in this category.
Green indicates an incumbent left Congress, replaced by another African American. Examples
are Alma Adams, Stacey Plaskett, and also a couple of others who replaced departing Congress
Members during the session and were elected in November 2014.
Blue indicates new African American member of Congress in district that was not previously
represented by an African-American - Brenda Lawrence won a seat that was held by an
African-American until the 2012 election when two Democratic Congress Members were
redistricted into the same district. The white winner - Gary Peters - rans successfully for US
Senate in 2014.
There were two Republican African-Americans elected Mia Love and Will Hurd.
The representatives are Democrats unless identified (R)

In addition to Members of the House of Representatives, there are two African American US
Senators:
Sen. Tim Scott (R-NC) was appointed to Jim DeMinnts term after Dements resignation. He
won the election to finish the last two years of the DeMints term November 4, 2014.
Sen Cory Booker (D-NJ) won a special election when Sen. Lautenberg died and was reelected
November 4, 2014.
