    Wood Badge Code

    1. FRIENDSHIP

    WemustofferfriendshiptoeveryScouterwhocomestolearn.Wegiveall
    Scoutersthesensethatwearegenuinelyinterestedintheirproblemsandwe
    areinterestedinthemaspersons,notjustasmembersofourmovement,not
    justasScoutmasters,butweareinterestedineachcandidate.

    2. CHALLENGE HavingofferedtheScouterfriendship,weofferachallenge.Wesay,There
    isnothinginScoutingforyouunlessyoufirstputsomethingintoit.We
    offerthechallengetobebiggerandbetterandalittlemoreforthrightthan
    perhapsanyoneseverhadanyintentionofbeinguntilhecametous.
    3. EFFICIENCY Offeragoodstandardoftechnicalefficiency.Scouterscometousbecause
    theywanttolearnthetechnique;theknowhow,ofthegameofScouting.If
    aScouterbringsusaleaffromatreetobeidentified,wehavetogivethe
    rightanswerorhavethegracetoadmitthatwedontknowandwilltryto
    findout.Butwenevergivethewronganswer.
    4. FLEXIBILITY Wearequiteflexibleindetail,butweareinflexibleinrelationtoour
    principles.Flexibilityinmanymattersisverynecessary.Opportunitiesare
    different;peoplearedifferent;thetechniqueofcampingisdifferentin
    variouspartsofthecountry.Inleadershipdevelopmentwemustbe
    consciousofthesedifferencesandbepreparedtomakeadaptations.We
    mustnotcompromise,however,onthethingsuponwhichthismovementis
    founded:itsidealsandfundamentalprinciples.
    5. HUMILITY

    Wetrytoofferleadershipthroughpersonalhumility.Whileweshouldbe
    technicallyefficientandknowourjobs,thereisagreatdifferencein
    arrogantlydisplayingourknowledgeand,quietly,inaspiritoffriendshipand
    helpfulness,havingthehumilitythatenablesustopassonourknowledge
    effectively.

    6. LOYALTY

    Atalltimeswedisplaycompleteandabsoluteloyaltyloyaltytoour
    principles;tothetraditions,methods,andrulesofourmovement;andto
    thosewhohavegiventheirtimetocometoourcourses.

    7. ENTHUSIASM Enthusiasmmustberatedveryhighly.Wehavetheexperienceofmorethan
    75yearsofendeavor,butunlessthatexperiencecanbeputacrosswith
    enthusiasm,itsgoingtobeaverydulltorchthatwearehandingonfromone
    generationtoanother.Ineverycourse,Scoutersshouldgoawayfeelingthat
    itwasdoneforthem,thatwemeanteverywordandeveryaction,itwasnt
    justarepetitionofsomethingthathashappenedbefore.Everyleadership
    skill,everygame,everycampfire,everypracticalpursuitofScoutingneeds
    tobeconveyedwithenthusiasm.
    8. GENUINENESSWehavethedutytokeepScoutinggenuine.Scoutingisawayofdoing
    manythings;itisntjustskills.Wemustalwaysbesurethatthemeanswe
    usejustifybutdonotbecometheend.Ourgoalsarecharacterdevelopment,
    citizenshiptraining,andpersonalfitness.

    9. TRADITION

    Therighttopreservealinkwiththepastisawonderfulservant,butletit
    masteryouandyoullstartonthatslipperyslopegoingfurtherandfurther
    back.Traditionmustbeourservant.Itstimulatesourdesiretomove
    forwardontheexperiencesandtheheritagethathavebeenbequeathedtous.

    10. KEEPITMOVINGOurjobistokeepScoutingmoving,nottobecontentjusttorepeatthe
    successesofyesterday.Wemustmakesure,throughleadershipdevelopment,
    thatScoutingintheunitisbetter,morecompelling,andmorecompulsivethan
    itwasforlastyearscropofboys.
    11. INSPIRATIONWemusttrytoinspireineveryonetheurgetodobetterthantheythoughtthey
    coulddo.Throughgoodcounseling,wemustinspireeveryonetowanttogo
    thatsecondmile,theonethatmakesthedifference.
    12. FAITHINTHOSEWHOCOMEThosewhocomeintothismovementcomenotbecauseofany
    selfishmotive,butbecausetheyseeinitachanceofputtingbackintolife
    someofthebenefitstheyhavedrawnandarestilldrawingfromit.Weshould
    acceptthoseScoutersattheonsetonthebasisoftheirvaluation;weshould
    realizetheycometousbecausetheywanttolearnhowtodothejobbetter.
