With manufacturer-rated speeds of 45 ppm for color and 60 ppm for black, the
Ricoh Aficio 3260C proved to be a strong overall unit during its two-month lab
assessment at BLI. Earning Very Good to Excellent ratings in many aspects of
performance evaluated, the Aficio 3260C, which has standard copy, network
print and scan functionality (fax capability is not supported), displayed sound
multitasking ability throughout testing. The unit offers very good administrative
utilities and a range of print drivers, including an optional Adobe PostScript 3
driver. While color print quality was very good as tested with Ricohs controller,
users with more exacting color output needs can outfit the Aficio 3260C with an
optional Fiery controller, which will provide more precise control of color output
and improved performance for graphics-intensive applications. Furthermore,
the unit is productive, garnering ratings ranging from Good to Excellent. Also
noteworthy is its four 80-GB hard drives (320 GB total), which is tied with
several other devices for the highest capacity in the competitive group, as well

Performance Overview
, and represent positive, negative and neutral attributes, respectively.
Reliability
VERY GOOD
The Aficio 3260C proved to be highly reliable throughout its 150,000-impression durability test. Although it misfed 13 times for a misfeed rate of one per
11,538 impressions, no service of any kind was required.
The units photoconductor yield of 300,000 impressions is competitive for
business color models in this speed range tested to date.
LAB TEST
MULTITASKING
VERY GOOD
Up to nine copy jobs can be programmed ahead while a print or copy job is
in progress. Some other devices in this speed range enable the programming
ahead of more jobs or an unlimited number of copy jobs.
The user must select the New Job key, which is small and may be overlooked, to program the next copy job, whereas some systems dont require
users to press a key.
The number of print jobs that can be sent to the Aficio 3260C is limited only
by memory capacity.
Up to nine copy jobs can always be programmed, regardless of how many
print jobs may already be in the queue.
The next copy job can be programmed once all the pages of the previous
copy job have been scanned. However, a scan job can be programmed ahead
while the pages of the copy job are still being scanned.
An administrator can establish a priority mode, which can either be copy,
print, the function that corresponds to the function currently on the control
panel display or the order in which jobs are sent. Interleave, in which the

FEEDBACK TO WORKSTATIONS
EXCELLENT
LAB TEST
VERY GOOD
The CDs are menu driven, and setting up drivers and utilities is very easy.
The Quick Install CD installs the PCL 5c/6 and RPCS drivers, as well as
SmartDeviceMonitor for Clients, automatically. Furthermore, the install
utility automatically locates the unit and creates the port. Installing the
PCL 5c and RPCS drivers, along with SmartDeviceMonitor, requires just
seven clicks. SmartDeviceMonitor for Administrators must be installed
separately.
The optional Adobe PostScript 3 driver requires a separate installation. However, the port that is created when the PCL and RPCS drivers are installed
can also be used for the PostScript driver. It takes 11 clicks to install both
the PostScript driver and DeskTopBinder Lite in one session.
The PCL and RPCS drivers can automatically detect configured accessories,
eliminating the need for an administrator to manually specify any configured options. However, users must click Update in order to initiate the
search for configured accessories with the PCL driver.
The PostScript driver does not automatically detect configured accessories,
requiring administrators to manually specify configured accessories.

PRINT DRIVERS
VERY GOOD
The Aficio 3260C includes a print controller that features a 733-MHz processor, while sharing the standard 1.38 GB of RAM and four 80-GB hard drives
(320 GB total) with the copier. The unit supports PCL 5c/6 and RPCS drivers,
as well as an optional Adobe PostScript 3 driver.
Layout of the drivers is dissimilar, making use less convenient for those who
frequently switch among them.
LAB TEST
The drivers offer a good feature set that includes smoothing, toner-save
mode and the ability to produce originals of mixed orientationportrait and
landscapein a single job. Additionally, the drivers all support secure and
proof print, but scheduled print is not available.
The drivers are easy to use, as most of the features required for a typical
print job are available from the main tab of the PCL driver, including quantity, collate sets and finishing. In addition, the RPCS driver enables users to
save the settings for frequently used or complex jobs as icons on the main
screen, thus allowing selections for multiple features such as duplex, stapling and booklet finishing with just one click.
The PCL drivers main screen is graphical, as users can opt for either pull-down
menus or icons that take them through each available setting when clicked
on in order to select the settings for Job Type, Orientation and Layout.

LAB TEST
Users can print booklets from only the PCL and RPCS drivers. It takes 14
clicks to program a booklet print job with multiple sets using the PCL driver.
However, if booklet mode is programmed as a default button on the control
panel, it requires fewer clicks.
When Collate is selected from within the application using the PostScript
driver, although the file size remains the same, the number of pages displayed is inaccurate. For example, when programming three sets of a 10page document, the Aficio 3260C sets the job as 30 pages, thus slowing down
processing time.
None of the drivers offers consumables feedback.

APPLICATIONS COMPATIBILITY
EXCELLENT
No problems were experienced with any of the test files used in the applications compatibility tests. Units are tested for compatibility on Windows
XP platforms with Microsoft Word 2000, PowerPoint 2000 and Excel 2000,
as well as Adobe PageMaker 7.0, Photoshop 6.0 and Acrobat 6.0, using 25
application test files that contain text, graphics, halftone images, tables,
etc., enabling BLI technicians to evaluate memory usage, file processing,
font rendering and grayscale capability.
SCAN FUNCTIONS
VERY GOOD
The Aficio 3260C offers scan to e-mail, network folders via FTP or SMB, the
Document Server (the units hard drive) and desktop management applications such as DeskTopBinder Lite.
Via the Document Server, copied, printed and scanned documents can be automatically stored on one of the Aficio 3260Cs four 80-GB hard drives. Moreover,
users have the ability to store documents with a PIN, ensuring file integrity.
LAB TEST
Users can preview scans for quality at the device before transmitting them
and view documents stored in the Document Server either in a list view or
as thumbnail images both at the unit and via Web Image Monitor.
DeskTopBinder Lite, which comes bundled with the CD containing the scan
driver, enables users to view, download and repurpose documents stored on
the hard drive. Furthermore, files stored in the Document Server can be sent
via e-mail.
Up to five LDAP servers can be enabled, with users being able to search by
name, fax number, e-mail address, company name and department name as
long as this information exists in the mail server.
In addition to directly selecting addresses from LDAP servers, addresses can
be programmed at the control panel, which features a QWERTY keypad.
It takes 18 keystrokes without a user name and password to perform a scanto-e-mail job to one destination using LDAP with a 300-dpi PDF file. Scanning
to two destinations increases the number of keystrokes to 19.
Users can set up a scan-to-e-mail favorites list.
Although the unit does not generate an error when sending to an e-mail
address that does not exist, a second job can be sent to an existing address
even though the first job is held.

Image Quality
Color Print/Copy Quality
VERY GOOD/GOOD
Color output printed by the Aficio 3260C was rated Very Good. Business
graphics exhibited bright colors and received above average marks across
the board save for only average consistency of coverage. Despite some
graininess, photographic image output was also very good overall, with
above average sharpness.
LAB TEST
In copy mode, color output was good overall. Business graphics had average
sharpness and production of pastel shades, while background reproduction
was below average (light backgrounds in BLIs test original were not visible on the copy). Although flesh tones were natural looking, photographic
images were grainy.
A range of color adjustments can be accessed via the control panel. Users
can adjust color balance, primary and secondary colors and, for copy mode,
sharp/soft, contrast and background density. Users also have access to 15
color presets.
GOOD
Text printed by the unit was rated Very Good, as characters were dark,
sharp and fully formed, with no evidence of toner overspray.
In copy mode, text was good overall. BLI technicians cited average darkness, sharpness and smoothness of curves/lines/serifs, although characters
were not always fully formed, with some breakup evident.
Although line art in print mode was rated Good, with consistent line thickness and closely spaced fine lines remaining distinct, circles were not always
fully formed. In addition, there was some evidence of stair-stepping of diagonal lines.
Line art in copy mode was very good overall, earning above average marks
across the board.
In print mode, halftone pattern and halftone range were rated Good and
Very Good, respectively. Halftones were produced from the 2 percent to 100

PRODUCTIVITY
Color Print/Copy Productivity
GOOD/VERY GOOD
When printing BLIs job stream, which replicates typical office use in a
multi-user environment, from the PostScript driver, the Aficio 3260C had a
competitive actual running speed when compared to business color models
tested to date; its efficiency rate, however, was well below average.
LAB TEST
Because of the units high-rated engine speed, even though overall simplex
and duplex print efficiency rates when printing multiple sets of a mixed
black and color document in auto-color mode are well below average for
business color models tested, actual tested running speeds are competitive
in simplex mode and above average in duplex mode.
10
Similarly, although copy efficiency rates in all three modes were well below
average, the Aficio 3260Cs actual tested running speed when producing multiple sets in 1:1 was competitive and above average in 1:2 and 2:2 modes.
The unit not only had among the fastest actual tested running speed when
printingfrom the PCL driverand copying booklets, but its efficiency rate
was also above average in both modes.
The PostScript driver does not support booklet printing.
Actual tested running speed in full-color print mode is competitive.
The Aficio 3260Cs first-copy time is competitive from both the platen and
the document feeder.
EXCELLENT
While the unit had a competitive efficiency rate when using the PostScript
driver to print BLIs job stream, its actual tested running speed is among the
highest for business color models tested to date.

LAB TEST
The Aficio 3260Cs job queue is only for copy jobs; users can check the job
queue for items such as number of originals, number of sets for copy jobs
in queue, user name, total sets programmed and job number. Print jobs in
queue must be viewed via SmartDeviceMonitor; if users want to delete their
job, they must wait until it begins printing in order to delete it.
12
There is no selection for 1:1 copying, which might be confusing if a user needs
to make a single-sided copy after completing a double-sided copy job.
Programming job build functionality is easy via Batch mode. Users can combine assorted sets of originalseach with different settingsinto one job.
It takes five keystrokes to program a copy job consisting of two sets in 2:2
duplex mode with single-position stapling and reduction.
Booklet copy creation was difficult as there are no graphical instructions to
walk users through the process. However, if booklet mode is programmed as
a default button on the control panel, it requires fewer clicks.
Although there is no mechanical counter, two electronic meter counters are
available from the control panel. With the basic counter, color and black
copy and print totals are displayed. The more detailed counter is accessed
from the Administrator Tools touch key within System Settings under the
Tools/Counter hard key. Users select Display/Print Counter to view the color
and black sent scan totals. Both counters can be printed.
Users can pull the drawers open without having to press any buttons when
loading paper. Furthermore, the length and width guides in the user-adjustable drawers slide to fit the size of paper being loaded.

Toner replacement is simple and clean thanks to Ricohs new toner bag technology. Users just open the door, pull the drawer that houses each individual toner bag out and drop a new bag in. (The bags compress as toner
is depleted and they can simply be thrown away once theyre empty or
returned directly to Ricoh to be recycled.)

FEATURE SET
VERY GOOD
The Aficio 3260Cs standard and non-upgradeable memory capacity of 1.38
GB is competitive when compared to business color models in this speed
range tested to date. In addition, the capacity of its four 80-GB hard drives
(320 GB total, shared between the copier and the printer) is tied with several other devices for the highest.
The units standard and maximum paper capacities of 3,400 and 7,400
sheets, respectively, is among the highest in the competitive group.
The Aficio 3260Cs bypass tray and reversing automatic document feeder
(RADF) have a capacity of 100 sheets, which is competitive for business
color models in this speed range tested to date.
The unit can accommodate 14- to 34-lb. paper from its drawers and 15-lb.
bond to 140-lb. index from its bypass tray.
Ricoh offers three optional finishers for the Aficio 3260C. The first two can
both handle up to 3,000 sheets in their shift trays250 in the proof trayand
can staple in up to four positions; the difference is that one can staple up

SECURITY FEATURES
NOT RATED
LAB TEST
The Aficio 3260C offers several levels of authentication. Windows authentication is the most secure, as users names and passwords are authenticated
against Windows directory service, Active Directory. LDAP authentication
verifies users against an LDAP server in a Windows or Novell networked
environment and before allowing them to send scanned documents from
their personal e-mail accounts to other users directly from the device. User
code authentication limits access to functions according to the user code.
Basic authentication not only manages the units available functions but also
limits access to stored files and to personal data in the address book. SMTP
authentication and POP before SMTP are also supported.
14
TONER YIELD
EXCELLENT
The Aficio 3260Cs tested color toner yield for cyan is well above the average
for the competitive group, while its yields for magenta and yellow are both
above average. The units yield for black is also well above average; in fact,
its the second highest tested to date.

Test Equipment
BLIs dedicated test network, consisting of Windows NT 4.0, 2000 and Microsoft
Exchange servers, Windows 2000 and XP workstations, 10BaseT/100BaseTX network
switches and CAT5 cabling.
Test Duration
Products are tested for two months, one month of which consists of a durability
test during which the product is run at its manufacturer-rated maximum monthly
volume, with daily volumes divided evenly over the course of the test.
Tested Configuration
Ricoh Aficio 3260C base model with Ricoh controller, plus optional saddle-stitch
finisher.
LAB TEST
Test Procedures
The test methods and procedures employed by BLI in its lab testing include BLIs proprietary procedures and industry-standard test procedures, including a BLI-developed variation of ASTMs 1318-90 Test Method for Determination of Productivity
using Electrostatic Copy Machines. In addition to a number of proprietary test documents, BLI uses an industry-standard KATUN test original for evaluating black image
quality and test suites from Quality Logic to evaluate applications compatibility. In
addition to a visual observation, color print quality is tested using the ANSI standard
IT8 Color Test Target, which is read using the Minolta CM503I Spectrophotometer,
and samples are analyzed using the CIE XY Chromaticity Diagram. In addition, density
of black and color output is measured using an X-Rite 428 Densitometer. GeorgiaPacific Spectrum DP 20-lb. bond is used in the tests, 10 percent of which is recycled
paper containing 30 percent post-consumer content. Image quality is tested using
Georgia-Pacific Printing Paper (95 brightness, 22-lb. bond).

Function
Note: A Yes indicates that the user can initiate the secondary function while the primary function is taking place and
that no further user intervention will be required for the secondary function to take place.
In addition to a single-user multitasking test, which evaluates a units ability to initiate or perform one function while
another function is already in progress (see chart above), BLI also tests a multifunctional products ability to handle multiple jobs that would be likely to stack up in a multi-user networked environment. Depending on the number of different
functions, three to six different job matrixes are run on each multifunctional device. The job streams within each matrix
are designed to test not only for concurrent operation of various functions, but also to uncover peculiarities pertaining
to multitasking as it relates to various software programs (Adobe Acrobat and PageMaker, Microsoft Word 2000, Excel and
PowerPoint), paper sizes, copy/print job sizes and copy/print modes (e.g., simplex, duplex, finishing).

PRODUCTIVITY
Job Stream
Auto-color mode:
The unit completed the job stream using the PCL driver in 1
minute and 0.53 seconds, running at 18.8 ppm, which translates to an efficiency rate of 41.9%.
Black mode:
The unit completed the job stream using the PCL driver in
30.60 seconds, running at 37.3 ppm, which translates to an
efficiency rate of 62.1%.
BLIs job stream includes Word documents, Outlook e-mail messages, Excel
spreadsheets, PowerPoint, HTML and Acrobat PDF files, totaling 19 pages.
This test simulates the type of traffic a typical device might experience
in a real-world, multi-user environment. All of the files are sent to the
printer as a group, at which time the stopwatch begins; timing ends when
the last page of the last file exits the device. Job stream efficiency is
determined by the percentage of the rated speed at which the unit operates when producing real-world jobs. The closer the rate is to 100%, or if it
exceeds 100%, the more efficient the unit.
