The Four Freshmen on stage at the Middleton Performing Arts Center

The Four Freshmens visit to Madison, Wis., last Saturday drew a very nice
turnout and lots of good comments from attendees during intermission and after the show.
Wayne Corey and I worked at the CD/DVD lobby table during both, meeting old and new fans of
the Freshmen, getting their comments and answering their questions. A bunch of fans left after
the show with one or more CDs to take home.
One of the things that made this concert different was its being the first time new Freshmen
member Stein (pronounced stain) Malvey performed with the group in Madison. (He replaced
Vince Johnson a little over a year ago)
Stein, however, is already familiar with the Madison area, having been born in Minnesota and
earned his music degree at Lawrence University in Appleton, Wis. (See the end of the message
for more about Stein.)

Also a surprise that drew a lot of laughs came when the Freshmen joked on stage about
stopping the show to take selfies (taking photos of yourself and others at arms length) of
themselves on stage. In this case, they used the camera of a front-row member of the
audience. She ended up with both the camera and the photo for a memory shes not likely to
forget.
From comments I overheard in the lobby at intermission and after the show, a lot of others were
leaving with good memories of the evening of their own.
Side note: The Freshmens bass singer Bob Ferreira may have had the biggest challenge on
the evening stage, having gotten up Saturday for a 4 minute very early morning interview on
Madisons NBC station (Channel 15). You can watch the interview at http://bit.ly/1vRsrNk
(Thats how I saw it. The live interview was way too early for me.)
You can see a photo of the Freshmen backstage before the show before getting in their
stage gear at http://instagram.com/p/u4CVYxHcEG/ Stein Malvey apparently was the
photographer.

The Madison show was the last U.S. performance until the Freshmen return
from Japan where they are scheduled for a show Nov. 8. They got a two-day break after
Madison to prepare for and make the trip.
Heres something Stein Malvey posted Wednesday on Twitter as they prepared to fly to Japan:
I'm so excited! And also tired. I'm excired. (stet) #tourlife @ Los Angeles International Airport
(LAX) http://instagram.com/p/vBj5fPTflo/
(I assume excired was a slip of the finger, trying to enter excited. Happens all the teme.)

Just a reminder one of my other activities is managing the 4 Freshmen Fan Fare
Twitter account to serve fans worldwide of the Four Freshmen and of other musicians a big part
of their lives such as Stan Kenton, June Christy, Brian Wilson, and others. You can access the
message feed anytime, with or without signing up for an account, by going to
http://twitter.com/FFFanFare
While there, you might choose to sign up for a Twitter account of your own. If youve been told
messages have to be kept very short and thus are of limited value, youve been told wrong.
With a brief message and a link to more content, theres no limit.
If youve been told Twitter is for frivolous information, test that with 4 Freshmen Fan Fare and
many other Twitter accounts. If you have a Twitter account, youll be able to share messages of
your own, use it to send me content suggestions, and search for other Twitter accounts that
interest you. Youll also be able to see who 4 Freshmen Fan Fare follows and thus who you
might want to follow on your own. The value of being able to follow others that you want to
know more about is an often overlooked benefit.
Thats it for now!
Sincerely,

Mike McCoy

APPENDIX
Stein Malvey began his musical journey at age four, studying piano at St. Olaf College in his
hometown of Northfield, MN. Growing restless with classical repertoire, he discovered guitar at age 12,
and fell in love. Just two years later he was playing guitar professionally. He graduated with a Bachelor of
Music degree in guitar performance from Lawrence University Conservatory of Music. Stein spent years
in both the New York and Minneapolis music scenes, recording and touring with groups in many genres:
rock, pop, r&b, soul, funk, jazz, country, classical and avant garde. He sings the 2nd part and plays guitar
for the Four Freshmen. (Source: Four Freshmen website)
