This weekend we celebrate the feast of the dedication of the Basilica of Saint John Lateran in Rome. It
is the popes church, the cathedral of the Diocese of Rome where the Bishop of Rome presides. The
first basilica on the site was built in the fourth century when Constantine donated land he had received
from the wealthy Lateran family. That structure and its successors suffered fire, earthquake and the
ravages of war, but the Lateran remained the church where popes were consecrated until the popes
returned from Avignon in the 14th century to find the church and the adjoining palace in ruins. Pope
Innocent X commissioned the present structure in 1646. I've not been there...yet, but they said it is one
of Romes most imposing churches. The Laterans towering facade is crowned with 15 colossal statues
of Christ, John the Baptist, John the Evangelist and 12 doctors of the Church. Beneath its high altar
rest the remains of the small wooden table on which tradition holds St. Peter himself celebrated Mass.
This feast raises once more the important question: "why do Roman Catholics and other Christians
spend so much money on Church buildings when it is the people who are the true Church and temple
of God?" Dr. Marcelino DAmbrosio has this beautiful explanation: The answer to this question is
best reflected on our Lord Jesus attitude who more than us, cared much for the poor. As an adolescent he yearned to spend time in Herods sumptuous Temple (Luke 2). As an adult, he defended its
integrity against the moneychangers (John 2). Francis of Assisi, who gave away all his possessions,
begged for money to buy materials to restore ruined churches which he rebuilt with his own
hands Ezekiel 47 gives us one important reason. Because the liturgical worship that goes on inside,
most especially the Eucharist, is the source and summit of our entire Christian lifeThe Church
building is a haven, a quiet refuge, a place to encounter God. Here we drink deeply of the life-giving
waters of word and sacrament that revive our drooping spirits (Psalm 23). The grace that flows from
the altar bears us back into the world, changed, and able to change others, bringing healing and

bearing fruit. Saint Paul, in I Corinthians 3, gives us another

reason to honor Churches. The Judeo-Christian Tradition
sees the Church building as a mirror that, held up before us,

God bless Our Veterans and Happy Veterans Day

As we always mentioned in our Stewardship definition about
recognition of Gods gifts, let us never forget to pray for our
veterans and their families in recognition the sacrifices they have
made for us. They are not just soldiers, they are our real heroes.
We owe so much to them. Have a very Happy and Proud Veterans day. Lets honor our military, the men and women who
serve, whose dedication to our country, does not falter, halt or
swerve. God bless you all! Fr. Roger
Mass Intentions
We are running out of mass intentions both in Girard and in Arma. For Saint Michael, for the month of December some days
are already filled up but there are days where we have no more
intentions to fill them up. For Saint Joseph you might have noticed that in the past month some of our intentions are coming
from Girard. Since we have already offered those intentions and
Girard is also running out of them, we have more openings here
at Saint Joseph. So this is your opportunity to remember your
loved ones in prayers especially at mass. You may call our parish office or you may put your intention in an envelope and kindly write specifically that it is for the mass intention of the soul
you intended to pray for.

St. michael, defend us in all our battles!

We Thank our advertisers for your support!

For Saint Michael parishioners, it is timely we are renovating our church! Let us continue to pray for its completion
and that there will be no delays so we can worship God again
in that church on Christmas! For Saint Joseph parishioners I
urge you to continue to support our church in many ways
with your time, talent, and treasure!
