EMBROIDERIES OF KUTCH

In Indian embroidery the richest in design, stitches and usage of


bright color combination is of Gujarat & Rajasthan .The embroidery of
Kutch flourished in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Some other
native stitches and the use of mirrors gives it a beautiful ethnic
appearance which people refer to as kutchi embroidery

AHIR
Ahir embroidery is a symbolized form of embroidery, which appears exactly
like a chain stich. Thus the embroidery is not only skillful in stitchery but
also talented in developing designs, preparing pattern, drawing and tracing
the same on the fabric.
Ahir embroidery but one village, Jikdi, portrayed willingness towards sharing
their techniques and history regarding this particular embroidery. Located
22.1 kms away from Bhuj, the village was warm and welcoming.

JATT
The garasia jatt embroidery is different than that of dhanetha. In this
embroidery Crisscross tiny patterns embroidery is done with tiny mirrors
which looks like bejeweled needlework created with uttermost minimalism.
Jat embroidery from Kutch is considered a classical form of textile
embellishment bearing strong influence to the embroidery style practiced in
Sindh.
Various designs have been developed by changing the use of mirrors, forms,
colours and grid layouts. It is basically counted cross stich work.

It is unclear where they acquired the cloth traditionally but they mostly
wove it themselves but there is no as such evidence of them weaving the
clothes.
MEGHWAL
Meghwals are masters in weaving wool and cotton, their women do exquisite
embroidery and appliqu work. Leather embroidery is another one of their
specialties.
Meghwal-Harijans who migrated from Rajasthan use Khambira (stepped
running stitch), Kharek (double running stitch filled with satin stitch in a
geometric style which fills the entire fabric), Kudi stitches in their
embroidery. They use satin stitch embroidery in the area with very minute
mirror designs similar to the famous Mutwa embroidery
MUTWA
The Mutwa embroidery practiced by the community was more intricate than
the embroideries of any other community. Though unaware about the origin
of the embroidery, it is assumed that the need to ornament the fabric may
have given birth to the embroidery.
. The embroidery included ample use of tiny small, circular mirrors. The
style is further made up of Pakko, Mukko, Chikan, Chopat, Katri and Gotan.
RABARI
They are recognized for distinctive style of embroidery in which they use
mirrors generously. The rabaris are known to embroider wide range of
garments, bags, household decoration and animal trappings. The objects the
embroider highlights in their embroidery are important events, beliefs and
traditions in their life.
