The Sun Certified Programmer for Java 2 Platform
5.0 certification exam is for programmers
experienced using the Java programming
language.

For candidates who already hold an SCJP
certification under a prior version and want to be
certified under a more recent version, Sun provides
SCJP 5.0 Upgrade exam.

SCJP 5.0 Upgrade certification Exam covers lesser number of topics and costs less
than the SCJP 5.0 certification exam. This will become evident from the further
slides.

that a programmer understands the basic syntax

Pass score: 27 questions correctly out of 46
(almost 58%)

Question Format

Question format is multiple choice, including some
drag-and-drop questions.

The number of correct answers is given in case of
multiple choice questions with multiple answers.

There are hardly any questions with true/false
answers.

There are a lot of questions with three (or
sometimes two) correct answers.

Question with radio button answers means that
only one answer is correct.

Questions vary from very easy to very difficult, but
mostly difficult.

No credit is given for partially correct answers in
case of questions with multiple answers.

Once you have gone through all the concepts thoroughly, take as many mock
exams as possible to test your knowledge. The web portal

through all your doubts. This portal also has a forum where you can ask your

Registering for the Exam

Exam is administered through a company called
Prometric. They provide computer-based testing
services for their clients.

Prometric has more than 4800 testing centers
located in 121 countries around the world.

Test is paid for through the purchase of vouchers.

Exam voucher must be purchased before signing
up at a local Prometric Testing Center.

Exam voucher is valid for a period of 1 year from
the date of issue/purchase.

NB: Each exam voucher is valid for one exam and only be used at an Authorized
Prometric Testing Center in the country for which it was purchased. Please be
aware that exam vouchers are non-refundable for any reason. Be sure to obtain the
correct voucher for the programmer exam.

Taking the Exam

After having purchased the exam voucher, contact an
authorized Prometric Testing Center near you.

Reach the testing center at least 15 minutes before

the test start time, and be prepared to show two forms
of identification, one of which should be a photo ID.

You cant bring anything with you into the testing
room. You will be provided something to write on and
something to write with.

In India alone, there are 185 Prometric Testing Centers as of now. Infosys is also a

During the Exam

About 30% of the questions in the SCJP 5.0 exam
are Drag and Drop type. The answer gets reset if
you try to review it. So, always complete and
double-check your answer before moving away
from a Drag and Drop question.

It may be helpful to solve Drag and Drop questions
on a sheet of paper before actually attempting
them in the test.

After the Exam

After you finish the test, the computer screen will
display your result (whether you have passed or
not). You will also receive a printed copy of the
detailed results.

Within a month or so, you will receive your
certificate from sun in the mail if you passed the
exam.

However, if you fail to pass the exam, you can take
the exam again, but you will need to purchase
another voucher and wait for 2 weeks before
retesting.
