~~DISTRICT CONFERENCE REPORT~~

John Erickson and Roger Gregory reported
that the District Conference in Reno last

*Nov. 18 -- Janet Young, Contra Costa Juvenile Hall

* Nov. 25 Saving Mt. Diablo
* Dec 2 TBD
** Dec 9 Club Christmas Party at Miramonte Gardens
* Regular Tuesday noon meeting
** Second Tuesday Evening Meeting at 6:00p

~~BUSINESS MEETING~~
The meeting was opened by President Debbie
Roessler who is recovering from a brief hospital
stay with forgettable hospital food, and she got a
round of applause upon her return, even though
she barely had the strength to ring the bell.
The Thought for the Day regarding elections,
from 400 BC to now, and a prayer about
elections, were delivered by Herb Wehmeyer,
followed by the Pledge of Allegiance.

~~CONFESSIONS AND HAPPY BUCKS~~

Al Simonsen, who with Marilyn just returned
from a couple of weeks in Kauai, spun the wheel
for $10 but bumped the total to $20 . . . .Lad
Lynch was a bit slow to remember that he and
Leslie had just returned from Maui, but popped
for $20 also. . . . Frank May popped for $20 to
commemorate the birth of their ninth grandchild,
Charlie (will they call him CharlieMAYne?) . . . ..
.
Ron Mucovich gave $2 for the latest Cal football
victory . . . Vickie Devlin gave $2 for her brilliant
Halloween costume of Yoda . . . .David Kruegel
gave a High Five for the end of the political
campaign he has worked on for many months. . .

weekend was a fun event with lots of great

fellowship and excellent speakers. The last (and
best, of course) speaker was PRIP Cliff
Dochterman, who gave his Last Speech with his
usual eloquence, wisdom, and humor. Thanks
to Mary Sue and John Erickson for making an
excellent display board (probably the best at the
Conference) about our Employee of the Month
program which is now more than three years
old, and is capably being run by Kevin Reneau,
Frank May, and Cliff Dochterman.
At the 2013 District Conference, participants
worked with the Stop Hunger charity to sponsor
and fill about 14,000 bags of food; this year,
Rotarians and friends filled about 24,000 bags of
food, which will provide about 144,000 nutritious
meals.
Raffle: $10 won by Herb Wehmeyer, but he
left $97 on the table with an unfortunate
marble choice.

The family has announced that a memorial

service for Roger Poynts will be held on
Saturday, November 22 at 4:30 pm at the Orinda
Masonic Lodge, 4 Altarinda Way.

~~ANNOUNCEMENTS~~
President Debbie announced that the kickoff
meeting for A Nite at the Races fundraiser, to
be held March 14, 2015 (save the date!), will be
held the evening of November 18 at Cliffs
house, in conjunction with the monthly Board
meeting. Rotarians who have not been on the
committee before are especially welcome. . . . . .
The SMC Rotaract Club is hosting its second
annual Celebrate Literacy event for children
ages 2 through 8 at Assumption Hall this
Saturday from 9:30 am to 12 noon. You are
welcome to bring children and grandchildren to
this event, where stories will be read to them. . . .
Ann Damaschino will be e-mailing everyone to
coordinate the stocking stuffing/pot luck dinner
on Sunday Dec 14. . . . Roger Gregory reported
that the St. Marys police are actively ticketing
vehicles without the required (free) SMC sticker.
The fine is $40, but may be forgiven if the perp
gets a sticker promptly. (Save your $40 for
Rotary!). . . We got a nice note of thanks for the
speakers gift of 200 Polio Plus vaccines from
Christine Deane, who spoke on Oct 28.
~~PROGRAM~~
Our speaker today was Kyla Tynes, the
Museum Manager at the SMC Museum of Art.
She has a BA in Art History and Pre-Law from
UCSB, has a MA in Visual Arts Administration
from New York University, and is close to
earning an MBA at St. Marys College. She has
worked at the Rockefeller Center office of
Christies, the auction house, in New York, has
worked in San Francisco at the John Berggruen
Gallery and later as the Associate Director of the
Michael Rosenthal Gallery. She has held her
current position for five years.
The art museum at St. Marys College had its
beginning in 1934 when Brother Cornelius, a

fan of the landscape paintings of William Keith,

published a book about his works. This focus on
Keith re-energized other museums to devote
more time to acquisitions and exhibitions of
Keiths work.
The SMC museum is currently displaying a
collection of Indian pottery from pueblos in the
Rio Grande River area. The pottery styles
differed in each of the pueblos due to differences
in the clay, glazes, and cultural reasons. In
1540, many pueblos were disrupted by Spanish
explorers and conquerors, and in 1880, the
railroad construction in the area brought many
visitors who appreciated the pottery.
The museum has shown the collections of Roger
Epperson, an East Bay Regional park ranger
who amassed his collection by finding bargains
in antique stores and on e-bay. Artists that have
been displayed include Edward Sheriff Curtis,
who photographed the many Indian tribes he
studied, Edward Borein, who only wanted to
show authentic works, Maynard Dixon, William
Pennington, and Xavier Martinez.
In January, the museum will have an exhibit
about Christo, who created the running fence in
Marin County in the late 1900s.
