The Truth As We Lived It!
CHAPTER ONE:
It's not enough to

Win; it is what you do with the victory. Let's start
at the beginning: while people, organizations,
Fortune Tellers are trying to take credit for the recent election... bottom line is... we had particularly strong candidates successfully capturing
the hearts and minds of local voters. Congratulations to them for an enormous effort. I hope
they come to realize that what ever they are led
to believe... they won because of their campaigning. Fab Four... seize the moment -focus
on the agenda!
Barbara Delgleize, a
household name in our
community. Long time
resident, professional and
two time office seeker,
former Planning Commissioner. Barbara simply
campaigned - raised about
Barbara Delgleize $44,000 as of the last reporting period 10/18. Barbara
would like to WiFi HB...we say Why Not!
Number 2 on hit parade list and still smiling ear
to ear is Mr. Mike Posey.

think we are on board to do that for now. He

CHAPTER TWO: So, how did they do

it. Why did two incumbents lose? Who helped...
who and what did not?
New and traditional influencers this election
cycle. (1) The HB Chamber
of
Commerce
formed a Political Action
Committee. Risky business if you lose...potentially REWARDING IF
YOU WIN. They selected only three candidates
to fill four seats. Sizeable funding came from OC
groups interested in change in HB. Their three
candidates made it to the winners circle. (Bar-

bara, Billy and Mike Posey). We tip our hat to

the Chamber PAC because, like others, they
organized for success and rose to the
occasion. Congrats!
Police and Fire Associations are
always a player, mainly supported
by their membership...
more for the purpose of
making sure those endorsed are pro Public
Safety and prove that they
put the safety of our community first. Two of the four candidates that won
-were endorsed by them. (Barbara and Billy).
The new Community Forum. First and foremost this effort contributed meaningfully to getting the vote out. They aired the issues, sometimes
created them in the sense of demanding transparency from the current office holders. Mostly
new people showing great passion for our community. They developed serious challenges for the
candidates to address. Among the 5,000 or more
new members... they generally agreed on one
thing... let's make this a better community with
more open government. All of their members had
combinations of candidates that included almost
all of the 11 in the race... Generally, I think, they
were cumulatively against the incumbents seeking
reelection. Like any group they had one or two
who just live their lives by bullying people... but
the group as a whole consistently over came that
and punched forward for more ideas, more creativity, more openness, etc.

Attracts 500 to
Newland House
n incredible exhibit about

"The Day of the Dead"
brought this city's oldest residence to life this previous Halloween
Weekend at the Newland House,
19820 Beach Blvd., near Adams.
The historic setting is spectacular
for Artist George Newnam's creation,
which tastefully honors the annual

event, celebrated in Mexico and other
countries. "Dia de Los Muertos" is a
very special time to salute the deceased with private altars and special
food. Newnam's creative "CASA DE
LAS CALAVERAS" (House of
Skulls) display is perfect for its new
setting, where it's colorful artwork
and multi-cultural music forge an atmosphere you will never forget.
The former Chapman University
film student uses his spiritual and
artistic expression to illustrate the
story of Gloria and Jose, who died before their marriage, then returned as
spirits to enjoy the worldly pleasures
they missed. Newnam's mother created the exquisite, huge papier-mache
figurines, and two other friends
painted background artwork in five
exhibits surrounded by recycled and
redesigned cardboard voting booths.
It looks like a Hollywood set--you
have to see it to believe it. As you go
through the house, you'll see the
skeleton couple visit a Fortune Teller,
Chinatown, have their Mexican Wedding, go to a Reception and Honeymoon in Japan. You'll hear the
appropriate music from Chinese to
Mexican to Japanese and more on
your journey. Outside, you can even
taste delicious foods from vendors.
Newnam, BFA, said his mom gave
him clay figurines of a skeleton couple in wedding attire when he was a
teen. "I wondered, 'What if this couple could come back to life and do
everything they didn't get to do before
they died,'" he said. "So, I started cre-
ating the fictional journey of Gloria

and Jose." My Mexican grandmother
gave me an illustrated book on "The
Day of the Dead," which really
helped me understand the beauty and
significance of honoring those who
have passed."
In 1989, Newnam created a popular

garage. Ten years later, after the gifts
from his mom and grandmother, he
transformed his exhibit to "Day of the
Dead." It became so popular it grew
out of the garage and has appeared all
around Southern California from East
Los Angeles Library to La Plaza in
LA to San Juan Capistrano Library to
a 9-year run at the famous Bowers
Museum in Santa Ana.
"We're really proud to bring this acclaimed exhibit here," said Kelly
Rivers of the HB Historical Society,
which operates the Newland House.
"It means a lot to the community."
There were even actors in appropriate "Day of the Dead" outfits. Film
Consultant Darrell Rivers and his
grandmother, Maureen, were dressed
in their own festive spirit.
Really enjoying last night's amazing attraction were HB Mayor
Matthew Harper, Mayor Pro Tem Joe
Shaw, Councilmember Connie
Boardman and many SoCal adults
and children. It was the talk of the
town. It's not scary but done in good
taste, sensational colors and artistic
splendor. Bravo to all the artists involved and congratulations to the
HBHS for hosting this educational
and memorable display.
It would be great to have this as a
permanent attraction in the historic
Newland House during the annual
"Day of the Dead" celebrations. I'm
sure once you see it, you'll want to return year after year.

he California Energy Commission approved the Application for Certification for the Huntington Beach Energy Project in Huntington
Beach, California, during a special business meeting today.
The Commission accepted the Revised Presiding Members Proposed Decision (RPMPD) and Errata, issued October 9 and October 28, 2014 respectively, which found that the project will, as mitigated, have no significant
impacts on the environment and will comply with all applicable laws, ordinances, regulations, and standards.
The 939-megawatt natural-gas fired project will be developed by AES
Southland Development, LLC. It will replace the older AES Huntington
Beach Generating Station (HBGS). The new plant will be built within the
existing facility footprint. Demolition of the old plant and construction of
the new one will be done in phases. The first unit is expected to be completed in about 30 months.
As part of replacing the existing aging and inefficient plant, the one just
approved will provide needed reliable local generation and promote the integration of renewable energy into Californias electricity system. Additionally, it will reduce criteria pollutants for each megawatt-hour of
electricity generated and use air-cooled condensers instead of once-through
cooling condensers that use ocean water.
The certification process for the Huntington Beach project began in June
2012 when AES Southland Development submitted an Application for Certification to the Energy Commission. The plant is projected to employ up
to 236 workers during peak construction and demolition periods and have
33 permanent employees when operational

ost people like to get bargains on the things they

buy -- when merchants cut prices, they naturally
see it as a win. But among economists, the idea
of broadly falling prices is scary -- and the fear of that
phenomenon -- aka, deflation -- is on the rise. But even
smart investors sometimes wonder what the big deal is:
Why is deflation such a huge threat to the economy?
In his most recent investment outlook, top bond-market
investor Bill Gross, who until his recent departure from
investment firm PIMCO managed the largest bond fund
in the world, said that the possibility of falling prices is
back. Comparing the current situation to what Americans
saw during the Great Depression and what Japan has experienced in its "lost decades" for its stock market since
1990, Gross notes not only that the potential for deflationary pressure is scaring central bankers, but also that
the evolution of the financial system has made it so that
"deflation is no longer acceptable."
The Problem With Falling Prices

On its face, deflation sounds like it would be a longawaited windfall for the general public. After decades of
seeing prices on everything you need climb inexorably,
deflation would bring those prices down. That would
make your savings go further, giving you more purchasing power for every dollar you have in the bank. Especially for those who live on fixed incomes, the prospect
of finally getting some relief from the struggles of making
ends meet on a limited budget sounds too good to be true.
Yet deflation leads to problems that would eventually
adversely affect most ordinary Americans.
First, ongoing declines in prices change the incentives
for consumers to buy things. If you expect the prices of
the goods you need to go up -- whether we're talking
about a new car or your pantry staples -- then you'll seek
out bargains and buy those items as soon as you can afford them in order to avoid paying more later. As a result,
a bit of inflationary pressure spurs spending and helps
support the economy.
If prices start to fall regularly, then that incentive reverses itself. Suddenly, if you're patient, you can save
money on your next purchase. Indeed, Americans have
seen the impact of deflation in the prices of personal computers, which have declined steadily for decades. Because
most people need computers, they can't put off purchases
indefinitely. Yet the longer you wait, the better performance you can get, often without paying any more for the
newer, higher-quality machines that constantly become
available. So we do put off those purchases, and tech
manufacturers feel the result.
When deflation becomes more common throughout
the economy, the resulting drop in economic activity
eventually forces businesses to cut back on their expenses, laying off workers. Those workers have far less
income to spend, which leads to layoffs elsewhere, creating a downward spiral that leads to far fewer people in
any position to buy those cheaper goods.
The second big problem from deflation is how it affects

those who are in debt. As prices fall, so too does the
amount of income that employers typically have to pay
to provide workers with the same purchasing power and
standard of living. Yet monthly payments on outstanding
debt remain the same, and so it becomes harder for workers to maintain their debt payments as those payments become a larger percentage of their overall income.
3 Tips to Protect Yourself From Deflation

You can expect central banks to fight deflation with
every tool at their disposal. But there are also some things
you can do with your own personal finances to reduce the
danger of deflation to you and your family.
Know that certain investments perform better during deflationary times: Bonds hold their value better,
while physical assets like gold and other commodities are
liable to get crushed. Stocks tend to deliver mixed results;
the best companies to invest in are those that have the
market power to maintain their prices even as overall deflation cuts the prices of competing products.
Reduce your debt as quickly as possible when deflation strikes. That's true not only for your own personal
finances but also for the companies whose shares you

own, so make sure to watch closely the debt levels of

companies whose stocks you own, and think twice about
investing in businesses that use leverage extensively to
boost their results.
Consider keeping more cash on hand than usual.
Cash typically loses purchasing power over time, but during deflation, the reverse becomes true. Moreover, as
asset prices get cheaper, you can use excess cash to pick
up bargains with the expectation that eventually, centralbank efforts will be successful and inflation will return.
Even with the falling prices that accompany it, deflation
really isn't the best thing for ordinary people to experience. With some precautionary measures, though, you
can reduce the havoc a deflationary spiral would wreak
on your finances.

program from WaterSmart Software. WaterSmart is a web-based program that engages customers through water-use efficiency and money saving
products and programs. As part of the trial program, 5,000 randomly selected
customers will receive a welcome letter to the program by email. They will be
sent a survey to find out information on their household, how many people in
their home, do they have landscaped areas, and how they use their water and any
water saving products or programs that theyve already incorporated into their
daily lives. Water usage data from the Citys billing system is used to generate a
Home Water Report that compares their water usage to other similar households
in their area to encourage improved water efficiency. In their Home Water Report, they will receive messages on water saving tips and educational information
on how much water and money they can save. The Home Water Report will give
customers information on programs and typical products that they might consider
for water savings and rebates. They will also receive information on upcoming

Rodriguez cousin, Yuri Sucart, who has served
A-Rod as confidant and gofer throughout his
MLB career, was among those indicted as a result
of the Biogenesis investigation. Sucart was a
mule for Biogenesis, providing A-Rod and others
with their drugs. A-Rod claims to have paid his
cousin $900,000 for his silence. Sucarts trial is
scheduled to begin on February 9 and prosecutors
have listed A-Rod as a witness. As a former prosecutor, Rodriguez isnt exactly the kind of witness that would instill confidence in me when
presenting my case to a jury.
For Rodriguez, the truth has always been whatever serves his interest at the moment. Like the
Pilgrim in Kristoffersons song, what A-Rod says
is undoubtedly partly truth and partly fiction. But
good luck to anyone who tries to discern the difference between the two.

If you are involved in the Forum... you have to

give Chris Epting credit for getting everybody to
stay focused, Michael Daly and his moderators for
being the modulating force behind the concept and
people like Moe... for stirring the pot without spewing hate. Who could forget the Troxell's... there to
stir the pot also.
The Freedom From Taxes PAC... yup picked all
FOUR WINNERS... This was unique to them.
They were focused on not losing any of the four
seats up from grab. They did not take no for an answer... when Mike Posey was criticized for being
too new or Erik was jumped on because he challenged density issues locally -they persevered with
their Fab Four. Barbara, Mike Posey, Billy and
Erik... they believed in them and apparently the
community did also.
Finally... and you can't leave them off any
list of people or groups that had a hand... finger prints on the outcome... This did take a
village. The OC GOP was, perhaps instrumental, in a complete sweep of seats simply
because they took the two incumbents on and
played a key role in convincing voters not to
return them to office. Good or bad, agree or
disagree... Republican or Democrat... they
established a goal and single handily delivered
on their commitment to their constituent
investors.

Fab Four appoint as Planning Commissioners and
other Boards! (3) Will the Fab Four get along? (4)
Where do they agree...where do they disagree?

Ferguson Protesters Want Police To Agree To Rules Of Engagement

(AMERICA WANTS PROTESTERS TO AGREE TO RULES OF ENGAGEMENT!)
ST. LOUIS -- A coalition of roughly 50 groups concerned about the fatal shooting of
Michael Brown on Wednesday asked police to agree to "rules of engagement" for the response
to the upcoming grand jury decision about the shooting and announced their own plans.
At a news conference in St.
Louis, "Don't Shoot Coalition"
members said they were offering
training in de-escalation and for
legal observers. They vowed to
have at least two safe spaces set up
in each anticipated area of protest
activity, to offer sanctuary in houses
of worship. And they said that had
been attempting, unsuccessfully so
far, to negotiate key elements with
local and federal officials.
The group said police should
value safety first, and agree to a
"de-militarized response" that would bar the use of armored vehicles, rubber bullets, rifles
and tear gas.
The group is asking for advance notice of the public announcement of the decision, so that
they can prepare. They are also asking police to respect the safe spaces and ensure protesters
can reach them.

A St. Louis County grand jury has been considering whether Ferguson Police Officer Darren Wilson should face charges for the Aug. 9 shooting of the unarmed Brown, 18. St. Louis
County Prosecuting Attorney Robert P. McCulloch said Tuesday night that the jury was still
hearing evidence, adding that he didn't expect a decision until mid- to late November.
Coalition members said tensions were growing, fueled by three recent fatal police shootings
and long-term problems that include racial profiling, a lack of diversity and accountability in
law enforcement, inequality and a lack of trust in police and the judicial system. The group
blamed police for escalating peaceful protests into violence, saying that given proper space,
protesters have been self-policing.
People "are going to pour into the street," predicted Montague Simmons, chair of the Organization of Black Struggle, and no amount of force will prevent that. But he said that the
coalition would engage in "peaceful, non-violent civil disobedience" in the tradition of Mahatma Gandhi and Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., and wanted police to use respect and a
non-militarized approach to protesters.
Simmons said he expected Clayton and the Ferguson police station to be "natural gathering
areas" after the decision is announced. "Every injury, every bullet that flies, every drop of
teargas," he said, will be on the hands of elected officials if they fail to act.
In recent weeks, the group has also called for a special prosecutor to replace McCulloch
and recommended a series of reforms to the Department of Justice's Civil Rights Division.
Spokesmen for the St. Louis County police and the Missouri Department of Public Safety
did not immediately return emails seeking comment on the group's requests.

Man killed By
Tape Measure
Falling 50 Stories

Camden County man died Monday morning after being struck
by a one-pound tape measure that fell 50 stories from a high-rise
under construction in Jersey City, N.J., authorities said.
Gary Anderson, 58, of Somerdale, was delivering drywall to the downtown construction site about 8:40 a.m. when the tape measure fell off
the belt of a worker on the top of the building, said Carly Baldwin, Jersey
City public safety spokeswoman.
The tape measure "hit another piece of metal construction equipment
15 feet off the ground, then ricocheted and hit this man in the head,"
Baldwin said.
Anderson was not wearing a hard hat but had one inside his truck,
which was parked on the construction site, where two residential towers
are being built, Baldwin said.
He had stopped to lean into the open window of a vehicle to speak to
someone. When he pulled his head out of the window, he was struck by
the tape measure and collapsed.
Baldwin said an official cause of death had not been released.
"Upon preliminary investigation, it appears to be a very tragic accident," Public Safety Director James Shea said in a statement.
The federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration responded
to the scene and conducted interviews, Baldwin said.
Anderson worked for National Gypsum, a North Carolina company,
according to police.

Americans have done a great job making sure that our

kids have something to eat at school regardless of socioeconomic status, with the National School Lunch Program
providing low-cost or free lunches to upwards of 31 million
students at 92 percent of
U.S. public and private
schools.
But that doesnt mean
the food has been especially nutritious, and public health experts say its
no wonder our kids are
more obese than ever
when we feed them trans
fats, salts and sodas for
lunch. Kids get half their
daily calories at school, so
whats for lunch there has
a big impact on health and
lasting eating habits.
A 2008 analysis of
school lunches by the Institute of Medicine (IOM)
concluded that American
kids consume very few
fruits and vegetables in
their cafeteriaswith potatoes accounting for a third of all
vegetables consumed. IOM also found that kids were eating many refined grains and too much saturated fat and
sodium. A 2009 study by USA Today found that meat used
by McDonalds and Burger King was tested for bacteria
and unsafe pathogens up to 10 times as much as meat
bound for U.S. school cafeterias.

Hunger-Free Kids Act (HHFKA). The higher standards in
the new law seek to align school meals with the federal
2010 Dietary Guidelines for Americans by upping the
availability and portion sizes of fruits, vegetables and
whole grains (and requiring students to select a fruit or vegetable), establishing calorie ranges, removing trans fats and
limiting sodium levels. The law also incentivizes schools
to take part with generous meal reimbursement funds. The
new standards went into effect in 2012 and have been
working

school districts from
coast-tocoast and
getting rave
reviews in
the process.

collected
plate waste
data among
more than
1,000 students in four schools in urban, low-income school districts
both before and after HHFKA took effect found that fruit
selection increased 23 percent following implementation:
Average per person fruit consumption was unchanged,
said researchers, but because more students selected fruit
overall, more fruit was consumed post-implementation.
Also, per student vegetable consumption went up 16.2 percent.

But just because public health researchers think the program is going well doesnt mean Congress will keep it
going. The Republican-dominated House of Representatives has included waivers for school lunch nutrition standards in its fiscal-year 2015 Agriculture Appropriations
bill. The provision would allow schools with a 6-month
net loss of revenue to opt out of providing the healthier
meals outlined by the HHFKA, Dr. Jennifer Woo Baidal
writes in the New England Journal of Medicine. A deficit
of any amount from any cause could allow schools to return to the same meals that the IOM found in 2008 to be
nutritionally lacking. Consumers interested in protecting
the new nutritional standards should weigh in by calling,
writing or e-mailing their Congressional representatives
and speaking up for healthier kids.

United States passed 8,000. When the news hit,
Napa Valley tech entrepreneur Paul Mabray took
to Facebook to remind his followers that "in a
world of infinite wine choices, the only differentiator is service."
This quote has long been Mabray's mantra. And
it's the guiding philosophy behind VinTank, the
company he launched in 2009.
"If your phone rings, you answer. If someone sends
you an email, you reply. But with social media, there's
so much noise that some people simply ignore it,"
Mabray explained one recent afternoon in Yountville,
California.

has been mentioned on a message board or by a blogger. This all takes place on one platform, accessible via
a desktop web browser or a mobile app. And wineries
can interact, in real time, with their customers.
"We isolate communication to, with, and about a
winery," Mabray explained. "We see VinTank as
mission control for customer interaction."
The ability to connect with customers all over
the world has obvious appeal. But context matters, too. So VinTank enables wineries to gain
insight into who their customers are, what
they're talking about, and what interests them. It
stitches together social profiles so a winery can
follow its customers on various channels. That
context is revolutionizing customer service.
To demonstrate the power of connecting directly with consumers, Mabray often praises the
work of Cornerstone Cellars, a small Napa Valley winery. Cornerstone produces about 10,000

lesser-known and often very unscrupulous acts.
For example, the "five-finger close" happens
when a sales manager hides a portion of a document with a hand to keep the buyer from noticing
that the final numbers aren't as discussed. The
move is somewhat related to "sealing the customer," which involves putting signed papers in
a sealed or even stapled envelope as a way to hide
things from buyers. There's also the "high penny
roll" where the finance computers increase payment amounts to a higher number without changing it by a full dollar to keep consumers from
catching on.
Not everything is quite so negative, though. For
example, most buyers might want to be known as
want a "chiseler" someone who is a hard negotiator. And one of the best terms on the list is a
"gold balls" a person with a high down payment
and good credit. The whole dictionary goes into
even deeper detail and is definitely worth browsing, even just for a laugh.

these days? For the vast majority of homeowners and homebuyers, the process remains quite simple. But there are certain groups
of people who are more likely to face challenges
navigating through the new lending requirements.
Federal regulators took over the mortgage industry in 2009 and have since done a complete
legislative overhaul. The underlying theme in the new
laws is that everything must
be documented. Individuals who relied on
stated or limited
documentation
programs in
the past
will find
much
it
more challenging to obtain a mortgage
today.
The most challenged
group will be those who simply
cant document enough income to justify the
ability to repay a mortgage obligation. The reality is that not everyone can afford a home. To
protect those who cant afford it from being
taken advantage of, federal legislators have
passed rules which prohibit lenders from offering loans to those who cant document the ability to repay. As common sense as this may
appear, there have been unintended consequences with other groups of homeowners and
homebuyers getting caught in the line of fire.
The most significantly impacted are the selfemployed. Whereas a W2d employee is qualified based on their gross income, self-employed
individuals are required to qualify using their net
income after all deductions. And because they
are afforded many tax breaks not available to

most everyone else, self-employed individuals
typically document much less income that what
they are truly earning. Those in this situation
will find it much more difficult to provide the
documentation required to meet todays lending
requirements.

My mom used to cut chicken, chop eggs and spread butter on

they used to call it discipline yet we all grew up to accept the rules
and to honor & respect those older than us.
We had 30+ kids in our class and we all learned to read and write,
do math and spell almost all the words needed to write a grammatically correct letter...hand write a letter, image that!
We all said prayers in school, recited the pledge of allegiance and
sang the national anthem, and staying in detention after school
caught all sorts of negative attention.
We all learned our times table by reciting them every day.
I thought that I was supposed to accomplish something before

I was allowed to be proud of myself.
I just can't recall how bored we were without computers,

Play Station, Nintendo, X-box or 270 digital TV cable stations.
We weren't!!
Oh yeah ... and where was the antibiotics and sterilization kit
when I got that bee sting? I could have been killed!
We played King of the Hill on piles of gravel left on vacant

building sites and when we got hurt, mom pulled out the 50 cent
bottle of iodine and then we got our backside spanked.
Now it's a trip to the emergency room, followed by a 10 day dose

of antibiotics and then mum calls the lawyer to sue the
contractor for leaving a horribly vicious pile of gravel
where it was such a threat.
To top it off, not a single person I knew had ever been told that
they were from a dysfunctional family.
How could we possibly have known
that?
We never needed to get into group therapy and/or anger management classes.
We were obviously so duped by so
many societal ills, that we didn't
even notice that the entire country
wasn't taking Prozac!
How did we ever survive?
