Course: Fencework

Information for Instructor

Target audience:

All Guelb site workers who will be involved in


fencing installation and maintenance work.

Objective:

Make workers aware of risks when installing and


maintaining fences.

Limits:

This course contains basic advice for doing fencing


installation and maintenance, but does not provide
detailed information. A Work Plan must be designed
before any fencing installation or maintenance work
is begun.

Learning method:

In-class training with instructor.

Estimated duration:

30 minutes.

Evaluation:

Questionnaire to be filled out at end of course.

Fencework
Upon completion of this course, workers will be able to:
Clearly identify the risks and hazards associated with each
step in fence installation and maintenance work.
Install and maintain fences on the site in a safe manner.
Recognize the preventive measures available for fence
installation and maintenance.

Evaluation: You will be asked to fill out a questionnaire at the end


of the course and hand it in to the instructor.

Safety perimeters must be erected on a site to protect workers.
These may be temporary fences (used during building
construction) or permanent fences to delimit the site boundary.

Definition

A fence is:
Any barrier around a piece of land that
shows its limits or prevents entering or
leaving.

On the Guelb site, there are fences:


Around electrical installations;
Around excavations and holes;
Around the construction site;
Etc.

Installation of temporary and permanent fences;
Fence maintenance.

will find:
Metal fences;
Plastic fences (sometimes).

A temporary fence that is poorly braced can tip over and injure
workers.

Temporary and permanent fences

Temporary fences:
Are used for short periods of time;
Must be firmly anchored to the ground and installed in
accordance with the Work Plan;
Must not be used to support workers;
Are also called guard rails.

Caution: Fences of this type are weaker than


permanent ones and not as firmly attached.

Permanent fences:
Are used over long periods of time;
Must be strong and stable;

Have support posts embedded in concrete;


May use gravel to stabilise the posts.

Caution: Fences of this type require strict


maintenance.

Some general rules apply to fence


construction.
Materials must be transported
using inspected lifting equipment.
Certified riggers are required.
Materials must be stored in a stable
manner.

To install support posts:


Follow the Work Plan installation
procedure;
Concreting training may be
required;
Posts must be stable. Never
leave an unstable post in place.

Posts must be sunk into the
ground to a depth equal to at
least one-third of their length,
and no less than 50 cm.

When excavating for fencing installations:


The Excavation course is required;
Always keep more than two metres away from holes;

Follow the Work Plan.

Tools must be used with care:


The Tools course is required;
Use tools that are in good condition;

Place damaged tools in the bin provided.

After the work is done

When the work is finished, workers must ensure that:


The area remains marked off as long as the work
requires;

All debris must be removed from the work site.

Specific rules

Courses and certifications may be


required for some fencework:
Cutting or grinding of metal parts
requires Hot Work training;
Working at heights requires training;
Using tools requires specific training.

Maintenance

Fences must be maintained regularly to


prevent breakage. Fences in good
condition play a major safety role.
Work site inspection patrols must
inspect fences.
All workers must report any breaks or
signs of premature wear on fences or
fence foundations to their supervisor.

Access

Safe access into a fenced site must be


provided. An entrance door or access
point in the fence is required.
Climbing on fences is prohibited.
