MUSIC VIDEO
TREATMENT SHEET.

Marvins Room- JoJos Cover.

Sule, Nasrine and Vesa

Introduction
We have decided to create a music video for a remix of Drakes Marvin
Room by JoJo. The first verse will have multiple scenes. We have
decided that we would like to do flash backs of the couple together in
Primrose Hill. Open spaces such as parks are good for romantic scenes
and also they are familiar places of leisure where every age, especially
our target audience, go in order to have time away from the rest of the
world and to look for tranquility in this peaceful space. The flashback
creates a narrative story line, which gives the audience a grasp of the
context and what is to come. We will also include bedroom scenes and
scenes on bridge at the beginning. The bedroom would give a more
personal touch and also allow the audience to connect with the artist
and there is a sense of voyeurism which would be intriguing for our
audience. The bridge would be a good location as it would be an iconic
setting that our audience would be able to relate to and this would in
turn attract them in itself. Bridges also symbolize mystery, darkness
and suicidal thoughts. During the middle of the song we aim to use the
theatre to create a scene where she is isolated in darkness and a club
like scene. We also hope to have more bedroom shots. During the end
of the song there will be a restaurant scene in Nandos because as well
as it being easily accessible for us to film in, it is a popular place for our
target audience. The lighting and colours in Nandos create a romantic
mood which would be clear for the audience to realise. There will also
be various shots in the bedroom and either more bridge scenes or
flashback scenes.

Background
Music videos have become increasingly popular since the 1960s.
Aspects of Bob Dylans Dont Look Back, which is said to be the first
ever music video, have been used many times in different music videos
creating a trend, a sort of tradition some may say.
The point of a music video is not only to
entertain your target audience but also to
promote the song itself through that video.
With music videos being very popular and
part of our media culture, it becomes
increasingly easier for the audience to
visualize the song. Its become a method of
visualizing music almost like a movie trailer for a piece of literatureliterature being music. In addition this is the only time an audience can
really connect with the artist on a day-to-day scale without paying
hundreds to see them live so it creates a bond with the audience and
allows the artist to create and state their individual and unique persona.

Artist and Genre

JoJo is a female artist who specializes
in the genres R&B and pop. Our group
has chosen this artist, as she is popular
amongst our target audience who are
aged between 16-19 year old and early
20s. She is also our target audience
age range at the senior end of the scale.
So as well as our audience being able to connect on a deeper scale due
to the similarity in age, they would be able to aspire and look up to JoJo.

R&B is a genre, which covers issues revolving romance, heartbreak,

relationships and sex. There are various artists who are very popular
within this genre and we hope to gain influences from their videos and
they include: Chris Brown, Rihanna and Beyonce. A lot of the meaning
comes from the lyrics of a typical R&B song and thats why we wanted
to have a lot of performance based shots as we want people to focus on
the artist saying the actual lyrics bringing and emphasizing the meaning
in them singing the lyrics. The song we are using is JoJos remix of
Marvins Room originally performed by Drake. Her remix is a females
perspective of the situation the song describes rather than a males
perspective. We thought this was appropriate because our audience is
mostly made up of the female gender and their perspective we believe,
needs to be the main focus. Our audience would be able to relate to
the song in many ways as they are young females who have most likely
suffered some type of heartbreak as they are typically at the stage in
their lives where they do explore love and relationships. This song fits
the typical R&B characteristics as its based around love and heartbreak
with a hint of attitude and confidence from typical R&B artists.

Lighting
The lighting in our music video will vary
throughout the course of the video. This is
due to the narrative and lyrics of the song.
There are some shots in which the video will
include natural light to give the audience a
more authentic image however the vast
majority of the video will be filmed either in
the evening or during the day but giving an illusion of it being in the
evening. Our target audience tends to spend more of their time out in
the evening as they go out often so this will give our audience a story
line they can relate to.
Our group has decided to contradict the typical
conventions of a flashback being eerie, dark
and something that represents something
negative that the protagonist has escaped; an
example of this being portrayed is in Beyonces
song Best I Never Had.
We plan to make the flashback a happy, positive aspect in our video to
show the past is full of happy memories whereas the present reflects an
eerie and unhappy place for our protagonist, which has a direct
correlation to the lyrics. This will be achieved by filming during the day
and would also mean there would not be any a lot of editing required as
it would be simple and the natural light source would be enough to
convey the world and space clearly. We will use dark rooms and lowkey lighting to reflect the emotions of our protagonist, which is
heartbreak and pain of seeing her ex-boyfriend with someone new. As
we will be filming during the winter season there will be less daylight
opportunity therefore we would need to film earlier. As most of the video
will have dark lighting we are then fortunate, as we will have access to
natural dark lighting rather than having to edit it in.

Marvins Room Concept and Ideas

Marvins Room is originally a track by Drake but many artists have
adapted their own cover to the song. We have decided to use JoJos
version because we believe the female perspective will allow us to have
a more distinctive target audience and to which, we as a group can
relate to therefore itd be easier to satisfy their needs. The song
explores the difficulty of seeing the person you still have feelings for
with another person and puts into light the anger and jealousy felt. This
is perhaps what most of our target audience is going or have been
through therefore we will reach them on a more personal basis. We will
explore the emotions of jealousy, heartbreak and the sadness felt by
our protagonist. All of these emotions are evident in our lyrics, For
example the jealousy is reflected in the line Fuck that new girl that's been
in your bed.

Fragmented narrative
The video will have a non-chronological order this is due to the narrative the
video will portray. Rather than a journey there will be more of an emphasis on
the emotions felt. We will use various scenes of flashback to help expand on
the narrative of the lyrics.

Camera Shots and Angles

In our music video we are aiming to use a variety of camera angles. This will
help emphasize certain images, emotions and give the audience a clearer
message in which they can relate to. The most conventional camera shot in
an R&B video more typically a love song, is a close up shot therefore we aim
to have a good share of close up shots. The close-up shot will exaggerate and
clearly show the emotion the protagonist is feeling and will enable the
audience to connect with them in a more personal manner. As well as
portraying emotions clearly, it tends to connote a sense of vanity and
spotlights the female artists attractive features.
Another R&B conventional camera
shot is a long shot. This shot helps
establish the setting and give the
narrative a more authentic side. In
R&B videos it is typical and expected
to show off the artists wealth. R&B
male artists tend to use long shots to
distinguish their massive female fan
base in which every female lusts for
the artist whereas the females take a
more singular approach and have one male that they are singing about and
prioritize. We have decided to use that convention in our video as we have a
female protagonist.
List of Camera Angles we will use:
-Close up; this shot will exaggerate and
clearly show the emotion the protagonist is
feeling and will enable the audience to
connect with them in a more personal manner.
-Extreme Close up; we want to make the
audience feel as if they are in the artists
personal space which in turn creates a
connection with the audience.
-Low angle; we thought this angle will enable
the audience to look up to the protagonist as if they were the ex-boyfriend to
establish her power and the fact that he is missing out which has a direct
correlation to the lyrics and the storyline.

High angle; usage of this angle will allow us to show the location but also
have the main character in the shot to suggest that she is isolated, vulnerable
and not in control of her surroundings.
Mid shot; this shot is an approximation of how someone looks in person
therefore creates a more realistic imagining in which our viewer can build a
relationship with the artist. The mid shot allows room for hand gestures and
also movement, therefore we will use this shot often.
Medium close up; this shot helps show the face clearer which is essential in
order for our artist to display her emotion.
Medium long shot; this shot shows the subject in relation to the surroundings
and the surroundings we use will be of significance to our main character and
the viewer will be able to go on a journey with her, which will help widen our
artists fan base, as they will feel like they are building a rapport with the artist.
Long shot; this shot helps establish the setting and give the narrative a more
authentic side.
Two shot; the two shot will show the relationship between our two characters
to reflect on their loving past and how happy they were. Within the shot the
characters will be intimate which connotes their love.
Panning; we will use this camera movement in order to establish the
locations that we have chosen and use the point of view technique in order to
make the viewer feel as if they are there throughout the journey and
experiencing it first handedly.
It which refers to the horizontal scrolling of an image that is wider than the
display, through out multiple transitions to create a more swifter and will also
create fluidity through out the video to make the narrative more
understandable. Panning will also be used in lyrics we feel stand out towards
our target audience to create emphasis on certain words such as fuck as
that is the start of the opening sentence in the chorus. In addition this word is
also performed during a heavy beat within the chorus so we have decided to
incorporate Godwins thought beats into the panning.
Cut on action will be used through out the video to create a tighter, compact
regular view so scenes dont last longer than they should.
Jump Cut is a technique used to connect two things from the same scene to
create fluidity. In addition it will be easier for the target audience not to be
confused about what is happening within the same scene. We will be using
jump cuts especially in the restaurant scene to work with the over the
shoulder shot to reveal the people within the scene and the conversation that
is unfolding amongst the new couple. Inverted dramatic irony will also be
created as the audience will not know who to expect when using both the
jump cut and over the shoulder shot which creates more suspense.
Cross-cutting is an editing technique most often used in films to establish
action occurring at the same time in two different locations. We will use this.
Match cut also called a graphic match (or, in the French term, raccord), is a
cut in film editing between either two different objects, two different spaces, or

two different compositions in which objects in the two shots graphically match,
often helping to establish a strong continuity of action and linking the two
shots metaphorically.
Flash cutting will be used in parts of the song, which are no longer than three
seconds as they are brief parts within the song.
Flashbacks/ elliptical cut will be used at the beginning of the video to reflect
the artist while she was in a happy functional relationship which will then
creates a contrast through out the video to resonate the before and after
situation of the artist.
We think using a black and white filter would be a good idea because looking
at R&B videos with artists such as Beyonc they connote how simple love can
be without over complicating it.
We hope to use a time lapse in order to show how the artist is stuck in the
same distorted mind place while the world carries on revolving around her, the
use of the time lapse will give that perspective to the audience.
Fade in/ Fade out will be used in between different transitions to create a
smooth transition. It will also be used to make the audience feel as if they
arent on earth, reflecting the artists mind frame. We will also use this edit
during different parts of the song where the sound is producing airy sounds in
the second chorus.
Split edit combined with the Elliptic cut will be evident during the first 30
seconds of the song which is a conversation over the phone occurring with
the ex and the main artist discussing whether they can get back together or
not. It reveals how the relationship ended on bad terms and they are both in
two different places.
Establishing shot will be used at the beginning of new locations in order to
create familiarity amongst our target audience and to reveal the story line
more clearly.
Using eyeline match with the extreme close ups of the main characters direct
mode of address at the Westminster bridge scene will create an emotional
response as you can see into the persons eyes which symbolizes being able
to look into that persons soul.
