Lateral Violence in Nursing and The Theory of The Nurse As Wounded Healer
Nursing is a high stress career. Because of this, we, nurses are in need of an outlet in
which we can vent our negative emotions. Unfortunately, vulnerable peers and co-workers
frequently end up being in this outlet, thus becoming victims of lateral violence. Our ability to
cope with the trauma can greatly affect our ability to care for others. So, in our professions in
which healing is what we do, we need to first heal ourselves from being wounded in order to
help others. Becoming a wounded healer allows us to maximize the use of ourselves
therapeutically.
