Rev. Egbert J. Figaro, CSSp., St. Mary Magdalene Parish, Chicago, died Saturday, July 24, 1999 in Michael Reese Hospital, Chicago from Complications due to cancer. Father Figaro was born on February 16, 1926 in Atlantic City, New Jersey to the parents of Egbrert Figaro and Rosalie Hendrickson. He did his High School studies at Holy Spirit High School in Atlantic _ City and attended Spiritan Missionary college in Cornwells Heights, Pennsylvania 1943-45. His senior seminary studies were done in St. Mary’s Seminary of the Holy Ghost Fathers in Norwalk, CT 1946-52. He made his perpetual vows at Ferndale, August 15, 1949 and was ordained to the Priesthood by Bishop Henry J. O’Brien on June 8, 1951 at Ferndale. His first assignment took him to Ann Harbor, Michigan where he taught in the Spiritan Junior Seminary in 1952. In 1958, he was appointed to St. Emma Military Academy in Powhaten, VA. It was the only military academy for Blacks at that time. He taught science and was Assistant Principal. In 1966, he became Commandant of the Cadets until 1971 when he became Director of guidance and development. During his time at the academy, the school became nationally known among the Blacks; even diplomatic personnel from Washington sent their sons to study there. His next appointments took him to St. James Parish in Dayton, OH as Pastor in 1972, and in 1978 he became Pastor of St.Patrick’s Parish in Charleston South Carolina. In 1986, he was appointed ~~ Apostolic Vicar of the Charleston Diocese with remaining Pastor of St. Patrick’s. In 1990 he became Associate Pastor of Our Lady of Lourdes in Monroe, NC. He was appointed Associate Pastor of St. Mary Magdalene, Chicago in 1992, until 1995 when he became Director of the community there. He is survived by three sisters ~ Mrs. Vera Collins of Chicago, Illinois, Mrs. Ann Tripp of Darby, Pennsylvania and Mrs. Rosa Hicks of Atlantic City, New Jersey. One sister Mrs. Audrey Kirkland preceded him in death in 1991.
