‫( ّن) ‪ with the‬ال ُْم َ‬ ‫‪ُ it is useful to first divide the‬ن ْون الت َّْوكِ ْي ِد الث َِّق ْيلَة‬
‫اآلخ ِر ‪ into‬ال ُْم َ‬ ‫الص ِحيح ِ‬ ‫ِ‬
‫ضارِع‬ ‫‪ (weak ending) and the latter into‬ال ُْم ْعتَ ّل اآلخ ِر ‪ْ َّ (sound ending) and‬‬
‫ف ‪ and‬ال ُْم ْعتَ ّل بِال َْوا ِو ‪ ,‬ال ُْم ْعتَ ّل بِالْيَ ِاء‬

‫‪2.‬‬ ‫َّوكِ ْي ِد ‪In the case of the Four Verbs the letter before the‬‬ ‫‪َ and in‬ف ْت َحة ‪ُ is vowelled with a‬ن ْون الت ْ‬
‫فَ ‪ and then vowelled with a‬يَاء ‪ it is first converted into a‬أَلِف ‪the case where the final letter is an‬‬

 ‫( ْت َحة‬since the ‫ األَلِف‬cannot be vowelled). Furthermore, the Four Verbs as a result of the
suffixing of the ‫َّوكِ ْي ِد‬ ِ
ْ ‫ ُن ْون الت‬are all ‫ َم ْبن ّي‬on the ‫ الْ َف ْت َحة‬. Because no ‫ضم ْير‬
ِ َ exists (whether in the
real or implied sense) between the ‫ْف ْعل‬ ِ ‫ ال‬and the ‫ ُنون التَّوكِي ِد‬, the ‫ ُنون التَّوكِي ِد‬is referred to as ‫مب‬
ْ ْ ْ ْ ْ ْ َُ
ٍ‫اشرة‬ ِ (directly connected to the ‫) ال ِْف ْعل‬.

3. In the case of the Five Verbs the ‫الرفْ ِع‬ َّ ‫ نُ ْون‬is dropped (due to the conglomeration of three
Nuns). This is followed by the dropping of the two pronominal suffixes: the ‫اع ِة‬ َ ‫ْج َم‬
َ ‫ َواو ال‬and
‫ يَاء ال ُْم َخاطَبَ ِة‬providing each one of them is preceded by a corresponding vowel which serves as
a trace indicating its implied presence (i.e. the ‫َّمة‬ َّ ‫ الض‬indicating the implied existence of the ‫َواو‬
‫اع ِة‬
َ ‫ْج َم‬ ِ
َ ‫ ال‬and the ‫ الْ َك ْس َرة‬indicating the implied existence of the ‫)يَاء ال ُْم َخاطَبَة‬. If the ‫اعة‬
ِ َ ‫واو الْجم‬
ََ َ
and ‫خاطَبَ ِة‬ َ ‫ يَاء ال ُْم‬are not preceded by their corresponding vowels but by the ‫ الفتحة‬instead which
is the case with the ‫ف‬ ِ ِ‫ الْم ْعتَل بِاألَل‬then they are retained and vowelled with their corresponding
ّ ُ
vowels. As for the weak letter itself it is dropped the moment the ‫اع ِة‬ َ ‫ْج َم‬ ِ
َ ‫ َواو ال‬or ‫ يَاء ال ُْم َخاطَبَة‬is
suffixed to the weak ending verb. It is needless to say that in the case of the pronominal suffix
being the ‫ أَلِف اال ْثَن ْي ِن‬no changes are effected except that the ‫ ُن ْون الت َّْوكِ ْي ِد‬is vowelled with a
‫ َك ْس َرة‬and the ‫ األَلِف‬of the ‫ف‬ ِ ِ‫ الْم ْعتَل بِاألَل‬is changed into a ‫ يَاء‬to accommodate the ‫ الْ َف ْت َحة‬that
ّ ُ
must of necessity precede the ‫ األلف‬. The reason why the ‫ن‬ ِ ‫ أَلِف اال ْثَن ْي‬is not dropped is that its
dropping will cause confusion with two of the Four Verbs, namely: ‫ن‬ َّ َ‫ َي ْف َعل‬and ‫َت ْف َعلَ َّن‬.
Furthermore, the Five Verbs remain 8‫ ُم ْع َرب‬even after the suffixing of the ‫َّوكِ ْي ِد‬ ْ ‫ نُ ْون الت‬. Because
َ exists (whether in the real or implied sense) between the ‫ ال ِْف ْعل‬and the ‫ نُ ْون الت َّْوكِْي ِد‬, the
a ‫ض ِم ْير‬

‫ ُن ْون الت َّْوكِ ْي ِد‬is referred to as ‫اش َر ٍة‬ ِ ‫( غَير مب‬indirectly connected to the ‫) ال ِْف ْعل‬.

4. In the case of the Two Verbs an ‫ أَلِف‬called the ‫( األَلِف الْ َفا ِرقَة‬separating Alif) is inserted

between the ‫ِّس َو ِة‬ ِِ

ْ ‫ ُن ْون الن‬and the ‫ ُن ْون الت َّْوك ْيد‬to prevent the conglomeration of the three Nuns.
Furthermore, the ‫َّوكِ ْي ِد‬ ِ
ْ ‫ ُن ْون الت‬is vowelled with a ‫ َك ْس َرة‬as was the case with the ‫أَلف اال ْثَن ْي ِن‬
(Alif denoting dual person).
5. In the case of ‫َّوكِ ْيد‬ ِ ‫ ُن ْون الت َّْوكِ ْي ِد‬the same rules apply except that this
ْ ‫ الت‬by means of the 8‫الْ َخف ْي َفة‬
‫ ُن ْون الت َّْوكِْي ِد الْ َخ ِف ْي َفة‬is not suffixed after the ‫ األَلِف‬whether it be the ‫ أَلِف اال ْثَن ْي ِن‬or the ‫األَلِف‬
‫ الْ َفا ِرقَة‬due to the meeting of two unvowelled letters) When pausing on the ‫ ُن ْون الت َّْوكِْي ِد الْ َخ ِف ْي َفة‬,
it is takes the same ruling as the ‫الت ْن ِويْن‬ َّ . Thus, after the ‫( الْ َف ْت َحة‬i.e. in the case of the Four
Verbs) it is paused on as an ‫ أَلِف‬and after the ‫َّمة‬ َّ ‫ الض‬and the ‫( الْ َك ْس َرة‬i.e. in the case of three of
the Five Verbs) it is dropped and the omitted pronoun (i.e. the ‫اع ِة‬ َ ‫ْج َم‬ ِ
َ ‫ َواو ال‬and the ‫) يَاء ال ُْم َخاطَبَة‬
restored (due to the cause of their omission being absent). [see table below].
