THE TREND

roduction of natural rubber (NR) in India fell 10.2

per cent on year to 53,000 tonnes during May
2014 due to unusually severe drought felt in the
countrys traditional rubber-growing region. The total
quantity produced during April and May 2014 was down
7.1 per cent from the same period a year ago. However,
during June 2014, the country is estimated to have
produced 63,000 tonnes, markedly up from the quantity
of 38,000 tonnes produced during the same month a
year ago.
Consumption of NR rose 2.8 per cent to 83,800 tonnes
during May 2014 from 81,500 tonnes consumed a month
ago (April 2014). The total quantity consumed during the first
two months (April and May 2014) of the current fiscal was
up 0.6 per cent at 165,300 tonnes from 164,305 tonnes
consumed during the same period a year ago. While the
consumption fell 0.5 per cent in the dominant auto-tyre
manufacturing sector, it rose 2.8 per cent in the general
rubber goods sector during April-May 2014. According to
preliminary estimate, the country has consumed 86,000
tonnes of NR during June 2014.India imported 34,702
tonnes of NR during May 2014 compared to 20,948
tonnes imported during May last year as per the NOC

issued by the Rubber Board for customs clearance. The

volume imported during the first two months of the current
fiscal was 63,842 tonnes as against 35,344 tonnes
shipped-in during the same period a year ago. Exports
of NR fell during May 2014 to 31 tonnes from 185 tonnes
exported during May last year. The total volume exported
during April and May this year was 59 tonnes compared to
the corresponding quantity of 1,723 tonnes in the previous
year. With the above trends in production, consumption,
import and export, the closing stock estimated for
May 2014 is estimated at 205,000 tonnes.
As regards synthetic rubber (SR), the production fell
during May 2014 to 10,678 tonnes from 13,690 tonnes
produced a month ago. The first two months of the
current fiscal showed a 40.1 per cent rise in the countrys
production of SR to 24,368 tonnes from 17,390 tonnes
it produced during the same period in the previous year.
Consumption of SR rose during May this year to 43,870
tonnes from 40,705 tonnes consumed a month ago. The
total quantity of SR, which the country consumed during
April and May 2014, was up 5.6 per cent at 84,575 tonnes
compared to 80,100 tonnes consumed during the same
period a year ago.
