The veterans among us

Service praised during Veterans Day program

While veterans have melted in to society, the guest speaker at the Veterans Day
program at UW-Washington County Nov.
11 spoke of the need to recognize their
service.
Though only a few, relatively few have
served, every American no matter where
they live, no matter what their opinions
we all reap the benefits of their service,
Kleinmaus said.
Kleinmaus noted that all across the
country on Nov. 11 programs were being
held to pay tribute to the sacrifices made by
Americas veterans.
Our veterans cherish the values on
which our nation was founded. They bravely answered the call to preserve those freedoms and their service should make every
American feel a deep sense of pride,
Kleinmaus said.
In the era of the 24 hour news cycle
and social media, Kleinmaus said it can be
easy to forget the impact veterans have had
on the lives of Americans.

So this Veterans Day, Im making it my

personal mission to make sure my friends,
my neighbors know that too, Kleinmaus
said. You see, veterans, weve kind of melted into society.
Kleinmaus recalled participating in a
military funeral a month ago when he was
approached by a neighbor of the
deceased. The neighbor said she didnt
know her neighbor had served in the military.
Our veterans, theyre your neighbors,
they go to church with you, they work with
you, and yet we do not know they are veterans, Kleinmaus said.
Kleinmaus asked those veterans attendance to stand, at which point they were
given a round of applause.
We must not forget the thousands of
our best and brightest who are currently
deployed all over the world, defending our
freedom, and we pray for their safe return,
Kleinmaus said. We stand ready to support them and their families while they are
away.

indoors, outdoors or both, there are certain
electrical safety tips you need to keep in mind:
First, always purchase electrical decorations and lights from reputable retailers and
make sure theyve been approved by a nationally recognized testing laboratory such as
Underwriters Laboratories (UL), Intertek (ETL)
or Canadian Standards Association (CSA).
Next, plan out your decoration arrangements so no outlet is overloaded and no cords

holiday lights, dont connect more than three
strings of incandescent lights. Alternatively,

When decorating outdoors, bear in mind

should be plugged into circuits protected by
ground fault circuit interrupters (GFCIs), which
are designed to protect from electrical shock
and electrocution. If circuits are not GFCI protected, you can get portable outdoor GFCIs
where electrical supplies are sold. They require
no special knowledge or equipment to install.
Once youve safely put up your decorations, continue to ensure your electrical safety
by turning off all electrical items before leaving
the house or going to bed. To reduce your risk,
its also important to keep Christmas trees
hydrated and at least three feet from heating
equipment or any open flame, such as a candle or fireplace.
Be vigilant about heeding these hints from
the experts at the Electrical Safety Foundation
International and give yourself the gift of safety this holiday season.

Schauer Center offering holiday art classes

The Schauer Community School of the
Arts announces festive, holiday-themed
visual art classes for ages 7 to 18 and their
families in December. Youth visual arts
classes encourage individual expression
and provide opportunities to work directly
with professional artists. Classes will be
held at the Schauer Arts & Activities Center,
147 N. Rural Street in downtown Hartford.
Art supplies are included and no experience is needed.
Classes include:
Family Holiday Clay Ornaments (all
ages)Tuesdays, Dec. 9 and 16, 5 to 6:30
p.m.: Students will work with family and

friends to create unique clay ornaments that

can be used to decorate the house for the
holidays.

with the 704th Maintenance Battalion in
Vietnam. Earlier in the day, a person who
