Hail, Christ, Our King!

MOST SWEET JESUS! Come near to us, Thy children. Receive from our hands that crown which those who
are but dust of earth, try to seize from Thee. Enter now in triumph among us, Thy fervent followers! (Taken from
Jesus, Mary, Joseph Novena manual: Fr. Stedman)
This celebration of the Solemnity of Christ the King marks the end of the ordinary season and signals the beginning of advent in our liturgical calendar. Dr. Scott Hahn describes this solemnity this way, The Church year ends
this week with a vision of the end of time. The scene in the Gospel is stark and resounds with Old Testament echoes. The Son of Man is enthroned over all nations and peoples of every language (see Daniel 7:13-14). The nations have been gathered to see His glory and receive His judgment (see Isaiah 66:18; Zephaniah 3:8). The King
is the divine shepherd Ezekiel foresees in Sundays First Reading, judging as a shepherd separates sheep from
goats. Each of us will be judged upon our performance of the simple works of mercy we hear in the Gospel
Moreover, the declaration of this celebration by Pope Pius XI on December 11, 1925 was necessitated by the forces of evil that corrupts the attitude of many believers! Pope Pius XI said these manifold evils in the world
were due to the fact that the majority of men had thrust Jesus Christ and his holy law out of their lives; that these
had no place either in private affairs or in politics: and we said further, that as long as individuals and states refused to submit to the rule of our Savior, there would be no really hopeful prospect of a lasting peace among nations (Quas Primas, Introduction) This situation is getting worst in our society nowadays that the more we
need to be humble and submit ourselves to Gods authority in our lives!
Enrich Your Faith, Read and Study More
Last Sunday I mentioned in my homily about Gods call to INVEST in Gods gift of faith to let it grow by learning more. If we surrender our lives to Christ, our King we have to know Him more. We have a few opportunities
in our parish for adult education our Bible Study every first Thursday at 7PM, our RCIA class which will meet
this Saturday, November 22 at 6:45PM at the hall. Both of them are open to all adults. We also have Kappauns
Men every Friday morning at 6AM. Whether this will fit into your schedule or not, it would still be good to access materials online. There are lots of good ones that you can study and most of them are free. Like Dr. Scott

Hahns website, the one I quoted above, Saint Paul Center for Biblical Theology at www.salvationhistory.com. I recommend him
and his website as it is biblically based. Dr. Hahns background
made him more authoritative on this matter. He was highly educated even before he was ordained a Presbyterian Minister in 1982 at
Trinity Presbyterian Church in Fairfax, Virginia. He entered the
Catholic Church at the Easter Vigil, 1986. His website contains
articles that include the Church, the papacy, sacraments, purgatory,
indulgences, and many more. You will certainly learn something.
Try it!
Happy Thanksgiving To All
And let the peace of Christ control your hearts, the peace into
which you were also called in one body. And be thankful. Let the
word of Christ dwell in you richly, as in all wisdom you teach and
admonish one another, singing psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs
with gratitude in your hearts to God. And whatever you do, in
word or in deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him. (Colossians 3:15-17)
The diocesan definition of our stewardship fits very well into this
celebration a grateful response of a Christian disciple who recognizes and receives Gods gifts and shares these gifts in love of
God and neighbor. Clearly as Christian disciples we recognize
Gods generosity to us, that we receive endless gifts from Him in
all moments of our lives. With this recognition, as we celebration
thanksgiving day, may our grateful hearts move us to share His
gifts with love in our hearts. One of the ways we can do these is by
our Stewardship Commitment. May we be able to reflect on the
different ministries in our parish and devote part of our time, talent,
and treasure for the growth of Christs Church in our community!
May you have a joyful and meaningful Thanksgiving Day celebration! Please take note of the schedule for Thanksgiving Holiday

John F. Kennedy, the Catholic President
After John F. Kennedy moved into the White House, many Catholics wrote to inquire if Mass would be celebrated there. They were answered by a form letter from
JFKs secretary, Evelyn Lincoln: The Presidents religious habits are, of course,
personal. I can assure you, however, that he is a practicing Roman Catholic. While
there is no chapel in the White House, the President and his family are fully able to
meet their religious obligations as residents of Washington, D.C. and find it convenient to attend Mass. How Catholic was our first Catholic president? Those who
looked to him to lobby for federal aid to parochial schools, to fight federal backing of
birth control, or even to chastise the Supreme Court for ruling against the recitation of
prayers in public schools, were disappointed. Historians agree that he handled the
political Catholic issue well - he got elected where Catholic Al Smith lost in 1928 to
Hoover.
He would have been false to what he promised in the campaign of 1960, and also to
the U.S. Constitution, had he tried to mix church and state. Cardinal Cushing stated
that Kennedy had a deep devotion to his faith, while he fought off and on with Cardinal Spellman of New York. He went to Mass and often quoted the Bible, but he never
began to push the religious prayer breakfasts & prayer meetings, of Presidents Nixon
and Carter. It wasnt the way he did things. Though just 1000 days in office, he had
some obvious accomplishments. Merely by taking residence in the White House, he
destroyed forever one religious issue in American politics. When he died, he had
many plans for Medicare, for civil rights, and Vietnam. His untimely death, Nov. 22,
1963, was not only an American tragedy, but a global one.
The Tradition of Thanksgiving
With the flurry of Christmas shopping on Thanksgiving Day now, we Americans
who jump on that bandwagon, are losing respect for the tradition of our founding
fathers, to set aside a special day to thank God for our abundant blessings. The tradition of Thanksgiving is nearly a thing of the past. It is being pushed in the background
so well have time to take advantage of the doorbusters downtown and still get our
tree decorated that evening! Ive noticed that many young people, who usually dont
care for tradition, are aware of the slighting of Thanksgiving and have expressed it.
They can see its importance.
There are many folks who dont believe that we have much to be thankful for with
rising prices, unemployment high, the ISIS threat with beheadings of Americans - it
isnt hard to see why many think that life right now isnt a bed of roses. However, it
takes only a bit of reflection to see that were so much better off than 85% of the
world! As practicing Catholics, we know this is true from the many reminders that we
get from the work of the missionaries.
What we should take from this is: 1) be thankful that you live in America and can
enjoy its benefits; 2) keep the Thanksgiving tradition and enjoy your family together
on Thursday. We have time for the Christmas season to begin. By keeping Advent,
we can bring some common sense to both holidays. In doing so, we can keep materialism under control and regain the spiritual meaning of Christs birth. You might
make a plan to come to Mass on Thanksgiving morning - that would be the highest
form of thanks. Have a great holiday!
