New research from Ume and Uppsala
universities has found high rates of sleep apnea in
women, despite the condition usually being
regarded as a disorder predominantly of males.
The study, published online ahead of print August
16 in the European Respiratory Journal, also
suggested that women with hypertension and/or
obesity were more likely to experience sleep
apnea.
Obstructive sleep apnea is a condition in
which there are frequent pauses in breathing
during sleep. The incidence of the condition
increases with age and it is considered more
prevalent in men than in women. In this new
study, researchers from Uppsala and Ume
University in Sweden aimed to investigate the
frequency and risk factors of sleep apnea in
women.
The study analyzed 400 women from a
random sample of 10,000 women aged 20-70
years. The participants answered a questionnaire
and underwent a sleep examination.
The results found that obstructive sleep
apnea was present in 50% of women aged 20-70
years. The researchers also found links between
age, obesity and hypertension: 80% of women
with hypertension and 84% of obese women
suffered from sleep apnea.
Additionally, severe sleep apnea was present in
31% of obese women aged 55-70 years old.
Lead author Dr Karl Franklin said: "We
were very surprised to find such a high occurrence
of sleep apnea in women, as it is traditionally
thought of as a male disorder. These findings
suggest that clinicians should be particularly
aware of the association between sleep apnea and
obesity and hypertension, in order to identify
patients who could also be suffering from the
sleeping disorder.

Text 2 for no. 6 10

Researchers at MIT, the Broad Institute and
Rockefeller University have developed a new
technique for precisely altering the genomes of
living cells by adding or deleting genes. The
researchers say the technology could offer an
easy-to-use, less-expensive way to engineer
organisms that produce biofuels; to design animal
models to study human disease; and to develop
new therapies, among other potential applications.
To create their new genome-editing technique, the
researchers modified a set of bacterial proteins
that normally defend against viral invaders. Using
this system, scientists can alter several genome
sites simultaneously and can achieve much greater
control over where new genes are inserted, says
Feng Zhang, an assistant professor of brain and
cognitive sciences at MIT and leader of the
research team.
"Anything that requires engineering of an
organism to put in new genes or to modify what's
in the genome will be able to benefit from this,"
says Zhang, who is a core member of the Broad

Text A
Future sea level rise due to the melting of
the Greenland and Antarctic ice sheets could be
substantially larger than estimated in Climate
Change 2007, the Fourth Assessment Report of
the IPCC, according to new research from the
University of Bristol. The study, published
January 6 in Nature Climate Change, is the first of
its kind on ice sheet melting to use structured
expert elicitation (EE) together with an approach
which mathematically pools experts' opinions. EE
is already used in a number of other scientific
fields such as forecasting volcanic eruptions.
The ice sheets covering Antarctica and
Greenland contain about 99.5 per cent of Earth's
glacier ice which would raise global sea level by
some 63m if it were to melt completely. The ice
sheets are the largest potential source of future sea
level rise -- and they also possess the largest
uncertainty over their future behavior. They
present some unique challenges for predicting
their future response using numerical modeling
and, as a consequence, alternative approaches
have been explored.
Text B
Anthropogenic climate change leads to
melting glaciers and rising sea level. Between
1902 and 2009, melting glaciers contributed 11
cm to sea level rise. They were therefore the most
important cause of sea level rise. This is the result
of a new assessment by scientists of the
University of Innsbruck. They numerically
modeled the changes of each of the worlds
300,000 glaciers. Until 2100, glaciers could lead
to an additional 22 cm of sea level rise. Since
1900 the global sea level has risen by
approximately 20 cm. Melting glaciers are one of
the causes along with warming and thereby
expanding sea water, melting Greenland and

Antarctic ice sheets, and changing terrestrial water

storage in dammed lakes and groundwater
reservoirs. A team of scientists at the University
of Innsbruck has now assessed the contribution of
melting glaciers to sea level rise during the 20th
century. They numerically modeled each of the
worlds roughly 300,000 glaciers and used
thousands of on-site measurements to validate the
model results.
These calculations show that between 1902
and 2009, glaciers contributed about 11 cm to sea
level rise, says Dr. Ben Marzeion from the
Institute for Meteorology and Geophysics. This
means they were the most important cause of sea
level change. Surprisingly, melt rates were more
or less constant over time: While temperatures
during the first decades of the 20th century were
considerably lower, glaciers were larger and
extended into lower and thus warmer areas.
Additionally, brief but strong warm episodes in
the Arctic led to strong glacier retreat in the Arctic
in the 1930s and 1950s.
