Masters Programme in
Bioinformatics
Master in Bioinformatics
2 years, full time, 120 ECTS credits
Department of Biology
Lund Campus
Application deadline: 15 January 2014
Programme start: September 2014
How to apply
1. Go to www.lunduniversity.lu.se and find the programme.
Programme overview
Bioinformatics is a broad subject in which biology, medicine,
computer science and statistics intertwine. The basis for bioinformatics is the massive amount of biological sequence
data derived from genomic studies and structural biology
and stored in large databases. Computational biology also
involves mathematical modelling of biological systems.
Click on Apply and follow the instructions for the online application form on the Swedish national application website.
2. Send your supporting documents (for details on docu-
ment requirements, see www.universityadmissions.se):
- Cover sheet
- Certificates and diplomas from previous studies at an inter nationally recognised higher education institution (univ ersity or university college)
- Transcripts of completed courses and grades for each se-
mester (including course list)
- Proof of English language skills
Programme modules/courses
Bioinformatics and Sequence Analysis, Programming in Perl,
Structural Bioinformatics, Genetic Analysis 1 and II, Large
Scale Analysis of Entire Genomes, electives and a Masters
degree project.
Most courses are full time studies, and you usually take only
one course at a time. The courses are typically teaching intensive, with lectures and seminars as well as theoretical
and practical exercises. You are expected to spend about 40
hours per week on studies, self-studies included. Normally
you take two courses of 15 ECTS credits per term, i.e. a total
of 60 ECTS credits per year.
Career prospects
Graduates have a diverse set of employers to choose between, both in industry as bioinformatics or biocomputing
specialists and in academia. Previous graduates have found
employment with Silicon Genetics and Novozymes, as well
as in research groups including at Harvard Medical School
and in Developmental Biology at Lund University.
Admission requirements
