*1: If solution is very new and no precipitation is in the solution, agitation needs to be
very mild. However, if Cr precipitation is in the solution, agitation needs to be strong.
SOLUTION MAINTENANCE & CONTROL
pH goes up during treatment. Maintain the optimum pH by adding 67% Nitric Acid.
0.017ml/L of 67% Nitric Acid lowers pH 0.3.
IZ-264 and IZ-264T do not affect pH much.
The consumption is approximately:

13.3 dm2/ml ( 75ml/1,000 dm2)

IZ-264T

40 dm2/ml (25ml/1,000 dm2)

67% Nitric Acid

As needed (approx. 770 dm2/ml)

Replenishment interval has to be within 10 dm2/L.

We recommend renewing the chromate solution at 500dm2/L. However, renewing may
not be necessary if appearance of chromated parts is still OK.
Cr concentration has to be maintained at 1.3 g/L (Range: 1.0 2.3) all the time. IZ-264T
contains Cr 0.052g/ml. After make-up, Cr in the solution makes precipitation. Need to
filter the solution before analyzing Cr concentration.

Drying
Leave the parts in the air for more than 20 sec (20 30sec).

For baked parts, alkaline activation is recommended.

Alkaline activation: 50 100g/L NaOH solution.
Activation
Insufficient rinse between plating and chromate may cause white-brownish stains.
Hot rinse and/or supersonic rinse minimize the stains.
Activation might be required to eliminate the stains completely.

SOLUTION ANALYSIS
1. Pipette a 10 ml sample of the operating solution.
2. Add 50 ml DI water.
3. Add 4ml of 10% Sodium Hydroxide solution.
4. Add 5 ml 35% H 2 O 2 (Hydrogen Peroxide solution)*1.
5. Mix until gassing stops.
6. Add 5 ml 35% H 2 O 2 (Hydrogen Peroxide solution) again.
7. Boil the solution for 20 30 minutes (add back water if necessary) to complete
the reaction and destroy excess hydrogen peroxide.
8. Allow the solution to cool and dilute to approximately 100 ml with DI water.
9. Acidify solution with 10 ml concentrated Sulfuric Acid.
10. Add 10 ml of 10% Potassium Iodide solution.
11. Titrate the brown solution with 0.1N Sodium Thiosulfate solution until the
solution becomes straw color.
12. Add 1 ml of 1% starch solution and continue the titration with the Thiosulfate
solution until the solution becomes clear. Record the mls of Titrate.
Calculation:
g/L of Cr3+ = ml of 0.1N Thiosulfate X 0.173

*1:

Poor quality of Hydrogen Peroxide solution causes inaccurate analysis

result. Hydrogen Peroxide needs to be retained at cool dark place, and
make sure that it is not expired.

NOTE
1) Plating
Plating thickness has to be more than 5m. The corrosion resistance is influenced by
the thickness. The type of plating solution and Ni co-deposition rate could influence
the appearance and corrosion performance. Higher Ni % in deposit provides better
corrosion resistance.
2) Water rinse
Keep rinse water clean to avoid drag-in. Dirty rinse water causes white stain.
3) Activation
Basically, activation is not required. However, 1 ml/L Hydrochloric Acid activation
can be used to avoid white stain appearance.
4) Chromate
Cr precipitates in the solution. Needs to be filtered, and adjust Cr to optimum
concentration by IZ-264T. Hexavalent Chrome impurity causes non-chromated.
Limitation of metal impurities
Zn: 5 g/L, Fe: 100 ppm, Cu: 5 ppm
5) Drain Tank
The parts need to be left in the air for over 20 sec after chromate before rinse. If it is
too short poor appearance may occur.
6) Drying
Insufficient drying causes poor corrosion resistance.
7) Waste Treatment
1. Waste water into acid waste.
2. Adjust pH 3-5.
3. Add 0.2g/L of FeCl 2 4H 2 O (40ppm as Fe) *1. FeSO 4 can be used instead.
4. Add 0.2g/L of Ca(OH) 2 .
5. Mix for 5min.
6. Adjust pH 9 10 by NaOH.
7. Add flocculants.
8. Leave for 10min.
9. Filtration.
*1 Need to add same amount (mol/L) Fe as Cr in the waste water. If the waste water
already contains enough Fe, FeCl 2 addition is not necessary.
SPECIAL HANDLING INSTRUCTIONS
DIPSOL IZ-264 and IZ-264T should be handled with caution. Please refer to the material safety data
sheet for complete safety precautions.
