SCOPE:This procedure details out the requirements of diesel leak test for single sided / single layer
weld joints that are accessible from back side for visual examination. This procedure shall be
used to check the following storage tanks weld joint of shell to annular plate:a) C40 Light Fuel Oil Storage Tank
b) G02 Raw Water Storage Tanks 2 Nos
c) G07 Demineralisation Water Tanks 2 Nos
d) G18 Condensate Makeup Storage Tank
e) G20 Potable Water Tank
PURPOSE & PREREQUISITES:The purpose of the procedure is provide a necessary guideline to carry out diesel leak test to
check the weld joint of shell to annular plate.
Weld joint and adjacent area within 1 inch shall be thoroughly cleaned by hand wire brush or

rotary wire brush to remove oil, grease, slag and rust. Weld shall be visually inspected and
unacceptable defects if any shall be repaired by grinding / grinding and welding. Diesel leak test
shall be carried out only at room temperature.

TESTING PROCEDURE:After completion of tank inside shell to bottom welding, weld surface shall be applied with
suitable developer. Allow the developer should dry; diesel shall be sprayed on the shell outside
(other root side of weld). The diesel penetrates through crevices or cracks/ pin holes and is
absorbed by dry developer showing up as a dull patch / indication on the bright developer
surface.
INSPECTION & ACCEPTANCE CRITERIA:As per API 650 para 7.2.4 applying a high flash-point penetrating oil such as light diesel to the
gap between the shell and the bottom, letting stand for at least four hours, and examining the
weld for evidence of wicking.
The above inspection shall be carried
REPAIR & RETEST:If any defect found by diesel leaking spots (indication) shall be marked for repair. Repairs shall
be carried out by grinding and welding. Repaired areas shall be retested as above by repeating
same testing procedure and inspection & acceptance criteria.
CLEANING:-
After testing / retesting completed the developer and traces of diesel shall be
cleaned off from the welds (inside & outside) by water.
