AKHS Knightly News

Week of 11-25-14
______________________________________________________________________________________________

Congratulations!!!
Over the past 3 weeks, AK Theatre's
department has competed in 2 play
competitions, winning at both. The
first competition was at Pine Crest
High School in Southern Pines High
School. We took both one act plays
from "Leap"-- "Our Place" written and
directed by Mr. Gabbard, and
"Eleemosynary" directed by Mr.
Seagroves. Both plays received a
"Superior" rating, which is the highest
rating judges assign. Senior Eric
Duncan won an "Excellence in Stage
Design and Technology Award" for
"Our Place". Senior Annie Saum won
an "Excellence in Stage Management
Award" for "Eleemosynary". The cast
of "Our Place" won an "Excellence in
Ensemble Award". Junior Clay
Harrison won an "Excellence in Acting
Award" for "Our Place". Finally,
Senior Victoria Jewell won the
"Outstanding Actress Award" for her
role in "Eleemosynary", which is the
highest acting award given and
received a free registration fee for the
NCTC college day audition. At the
regional level, 16 plays from 10
different schools in NC competed
against other. Out of the 16, the
judges pick one show to advance, and
the audience picks one to advance.
Mr. Gabbard's "Our Place" was chosen
by the audience and AK advanced on
to the state championships in
Greensboro last weekend!

HAVE A HAPPY THANKSGIVING AK FAMILY!

The State Finals are designed just like all of the other regional competitions;
16 different schools, with only 45 minutes to set up their play, perform it, and
get it off the stage. At the State Awards ceremony, Ardrey Kell received its
first award for "Excellence in Play-Writing" awarded to Mr. Gabbard. Then,
Junior James Clark won an "Excellence in Acting" award. Our final award
was given to Mr. Gabbard, the "John W. Parker Award for Excellence in
Directing". At the state level, 2 shows are also selected to represent North
Carolina at the Southeastern Regional competition to be held in Chattanooga,
TN in March. If you came and saw "Leap" and saw "Our Place", you would
understand why this play won "Audience Pick" two times in a row. The best
news of the night was when AK's production of "Our Place" was awarded the
honor of being a "Distinguished" play, and getting to advance on to SETC!
The NCTC High School Play Festival showcases the talent of more than 3,000
students from 100+ schools, in 128 productions. Ardrey Kell now represents
the State of North Carolina, what an incredible honor! Thank you for all your
support and kind words!
