Situational Leadership
• Model developed in 1960s by Paul Hersey and
Ken Blanchard, involving analysis of situations
and then adopting appropriate leadership style
• Different Leadership styles for different
situations
• No style that is always right
• Apply to all people at work, play and at home.
• The model is about Leadership styles and
Development levels.
Leadership Styles/Behaviors
• Directing (S1)
– Highly Directive
– Low Supportive
– High Task focus
– Low Relationship focus
– Leader defines and decides
– Follower needs direction and supervision
– For people lacking competence but are committed
and enthusiastic
– One way communication
• Coaching (S2)
– Highly Directive
– Highly Supportive
– High Task Focus
– High Relationship Focus
– Leader still defines and decides but seeks
ideas and suggestions
– Helps to restore commitment in people who
have some competence
– Two way communication
• Supporting (S3)
– Low Directive
– Highly Supportive
– Low Task Focus
– High Relationship Focus
– Leader facilitates and takes part in decisions
but control is with follower.
– For people having competence but lack
motivation and confidence
– Two way communication
• Delegating (S4)
– Low Directive
– Low Supportive
– Low Task Focus
– Low Relationship Focus
– Leader is still involved in decision making but control
is with follower. Follower decides how and when the
leader will be involved
– For people having both competence and confidence
– Two way communication
Development Levels
• D1
– Low Competence
– High Commitment/Motivation
• D2
– Moderate Competence
– Low Commitment/Motivation
• D3
– Moderate to High competence
– Variable Commitment/Motivation
• D4
– High Competence
– High Commitment
Leadership Style and Development
Levels
• Similar to leaderships styles, Development
levels are also situational
• Leadership Styles (S1-S4) of the leader must
correspond to Development levels (D1-D4) of
the follower….. AND IT’S THE LEADER WHO
ADAPTS
• This will get the work done even better,
relationships are built up, leadership gets better
and follower’s development level will rise to D4 .
Situational Leadership Process
• Overview of the follower and the tasks
• Development Level Assessment (D1-D4)
• Leadership Style (S1-S4) suitability per
task per follower
• Discuss and communicate with the
follower
• Make and agree on a plan
• Follow up, Check, Correct and Feedback.
