EDUC 2220- Educational Technology Lesson Plan

Exploring Structures
KELLY BUTLER
PRE-K

Ohio Early Learning Standards:

1. Domain: Cognition and General Knowledge
Strand: Cognitive Skills
Topic: Memory
Description: With modeling and support use and remember information for a variety of purposes.

2. Domain: Cognition and General Knowledge

Strand: Geometry
3. Topic: Identifying and Naming Shapes
Description: Understand and use names of shapes when identifying objects.

Lesson Summary:
Children will play a game online playing and building with shapes. The game will have different
options and levels of difficulty. This will help children recognize and learn the name of geometrical shapes. The
game will build a structure using/naming different shapes. The children will be then asked to remember and create
the structure.
Estimated Duration:

30 Min
3 Days

Commentary:
The challenge here will be to keep children engaged. I think the key is to meeting the children at their
developmental level, make it not hard and not too easy.

Instructional Procedures:

Day 1:
30 minutes:
Make the game available on the computer.

Day 2:
30 minutes:
Make the game available on the computer.

Pre-Assessment:
Assess the children on correctly naming shapes, recording their answers.
Take work samples of drawings/symbolism/emergent writing.

Scoring Guidelines:
Use picture cards of shapes, square, rectangle, triangle, arch, sphere, cylinder, and pyramid. Ask the children to
name the shape as you point to them, record their answers.
Take pictures of previous work and count the number of shapes that are drawn/represented.

Post-Assessment:

Use picture cards of shapes, square, rectangle, triangle, arch, sphere, cylinder, and pyramid. Ask the children to
name the shape as you point to them, record their answers.
Take pictures of the work completed during the project and count the number of shapes that are
drawn/represented.
.

Scoring Guidelines:
Each set of assessment will have a score. The first score will be the number of shapes the correctly named
out of the set of cards. The second score will be the number of total shapes they represented in their
drawings/writings.

Differentiated Instructional Support

For the children who are having a more difficult time recognizing the shapes in play may need more

intentional instruction. That is where the Little Mouse Game will help. It will be made up of cards with the same
shapes used in the assesments This focuses more on the memorization of the shapes needed for the children who
need extra support. For the students who might need an extra challenge changing and adding various materials to
build with could be a good way to expand thinking.

Homework Options and Home Connections

Ask and encourage families to work together to draw a blueprint/outline of their home.

Interdisciplinary Connections
This activity is easy relatable to both Science and Literacy in addition to Math. Predictions can be made, questions
asked, researched and recorded. Words are learned, writing and phonics are supported through the picture files and
recording of work.
