NURSING SUPERVISOR

FUNCTION
Performs first line supervisory and advanced journey level work involved in the provision of nursing services related to the
care and management of the physically ill and in preventive health care programs offered through Mohave County Health
Department in accordance with local, state and federal program regulations and policies.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED
Work is performed independently under direction of a higher level of authority. The employee is expected to exercise
initiative and independent judgement in accordance with established procedures and regulations.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED
Directly exercises immediate to general supervision of assigned professional, paraprofessional and clerical support staff.

EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED / ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS


1. Supervises, coordinates, directs and participates in the activities of an assigned area of the Nursing Division of the
Health Department.

2. Supervises, coordinates and performs a variety of administrative staff work such as: scheduling; maintaining records;
responding to requests for information or services; performing related administrative, planning and research activities;
preparing correspondence, reports, statistical information and budget materials; and assisting in the development of
policies, procedures and training.

3. Completes performance evaluations; may make hiring recommendations; recommends disciplinary actions; approves
vacations and time off; prepares work schedules and assignments; supervises the activities of assigned personnel;
monitors reports and record keeping activities filed by assigned personnel for completeness, accuracy, and adherence
to policy and procedure guidelines; instructs personnel in departmental policies, procedures and techniques; and
provides training.

4. Determines best course of action in the completion of assignments in assigned area including setting priorities.

5. Provides counseling and training of various health care programs such as family planning, growth and development of
infants and children, sexually transmitted diseases, communicable diseases and preventive health.

6. Performs N.I.C.P. (Newborn Intensive Care Program) home visits to evaluate at-risk newborns.

7. Performs various tests such as pregnancy, tuberculosis, AIDS, sexually transmitted diseases and communicable
diseases.

8. Supervises and participates in the weekly or as required immunization services.

9. Documents and maintains client charts and clinic records after each visit.

10. Meets with clients to obtain appropriate medical history, oral and written.

11. Responds to all positive tests with contact investigation.

12. Supervises and oversees the filing of forms, reports and charts completed by subordinates.

13. Prepares reports and summaries of public health and client activity statistics and other related statistics.

14. As required, performs a variety of clerical tasks including, but not limited to: scheduling appointments; answering
phones; responding to or routing inquiries; referring and directing individuals and clients to appropriate agencies.

15. Performs related work as required

Regular contact with associate personnel, other county departments, other agencies, and the general public to provide

program services, gather required information, respond to inquiries and problems and coordinate activities.

CONDITIONS OF WORK
Work is subject to varying post or job site assignments and may be subject to call-back or on-call status and irregular
schedules including completion of work assignments on evenings, weekends, and holidays. Work is also subject to
traveling and irregular hours in order to perform work assignments. May be subject to possible exposure to infectious
individuals and to infectious and contaminated materials.

All employees of Mohave County are subject to immediate callout when an emergency, disaster or breach of homeland security
occurs. All employees are considered to be available for these types of events and will immediately respond, in accordance with
County Emergency Operations Plan, when directed by the Chairman of the Mohave County Board of Supervisors, County
Manager, the Homeland Security/Emergency Management Coordinator, or when directed by his department director/elected
official and/or immediate supervisor. Such call to respond and assist may involve those activities assigned to his regular job
responsibilities and incorporate other non job related duties as necessary and required of an employee to respond to the
emergent matter at hand. An employee’s response to these matters may require the working of unusual, long hours over a
possibility of an extended period of time with infrequent breaks or rest periods. An employee who is working with an
accommodation must meet with their supervisor and department director/elected official to discuss their requirement for
response.

DESIRABLE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES


Extensive knowledge of:

--principles of nursing theory and the practice of biological, social and behavioral science.

--record maintenance procedures.

Practical knowledge:

--department policies, rules, regulations, and procedures.

--principles and practices of leadership, supervision and training.

Skill in:

--effectively operating and utilizing a variety of laboratory equipment and other equipment used in a health service
area, such as: Scales; Stethoscope; Spygmomandmeter and cuff; Hematocrit Centrifuge; Culture Incubator;
syringes and needles.

--effectively operating a variety of office equipment to include: computer keyboard; typewriter; fax transmittal; and
copiers.

Ability to:

--set priorities, assign, schedule, train, supervise and evaluate work activities and to persuade assigned personnel
effectively.

--plan and schedule work to accommodate the needs of assigned areas and clientele to assure programs are in
compliance with local, state, and federal regulations and procedures.

--make decisions in accordance with established policies and regulations.

--understand, interpret and apply pertinent federal, state and local laws, codes and regulations regarding public
health service programs to include departmental procedures and requirements.

--deal with problems which may be controversial or sensitive in nature.

--maintain confidentiality.

--understand and grasp ideas quickly and follow instructions with initiative and exercise good judgement.

--communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.

--maintain accurate and up-to-date records and documentation.

--establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.

ACCEPTABLE EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING


Any acceptable combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from an accredited school of nursing
and two to four (2-4) years of nursing experience (A Bachelor's Degree in Nursing is desirable) and one (1) year of
supervisory experience. OR an equivalent combination of experience, education and training which provides the desired
knowledge, skills and abilities.

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENT


Must maintain and possess a current license as a Registered Nurse issued by the Arizona State Board of Nursing. Must
possess a valid driver's license. Must provide acceptable driving history at no cost to the County. Willingness to attain
additional knowledge in the health and nutrition field through reading of health-related information and materials and
attending training and educational classes.
