John Reid, a member of the Stations & Revenue Functional Council and London Transport Regional Council Secretary, warns that LU/TfL is preparing attacks on jobs and conditions across all grades. LU/TfL plans include reducing supervisor positions through mobile supervision, removing the need for supervisors to check safety equipment, allowing contractors to collect money from ticket machines without LU staff present, and potential job cuts through reorganizing engineering grades and new signaling systems. Reid pledges to build united industrial action if elected to the RMT Council of Executives to defend jobs, pay, pensions and conditions for members against these cuts.

I Will Strive to Build United Action to Maintain a Safe, Properly Staffed Tube By John Reid As a member of the Stations & Revenue Functional Council I have already seen how management are introducing new practices in preparation for job cuts. As London Transport Regional Council Secretary I also know that similar attacks are being prepared on Trains, in Engineering, at TfL and Service Control. Meanwhile, RMT members working for TfL sub-contractors including cleaners and catering staff as well as our Taxi driver members are all suffering at the hands of an aggressive LU and TfL regime. We already know that TfL/LU is planning: Mobile Station Supervisors resulting in a massive reduction of Supervisor positions. Just this week RMT has received a letter from LU that disregards objections raised by the unions and states the companys intention to proceed with mobile supervision.

New technology on stations to allow G4 contractors to collect money from self-service ticket machines (POMs) without any LU staff being present. No re-entry in pension fund for former Tubelines members and a wholesale re-organisation of Engineering grades resulting in potential job cuts in all areas. New signalling systems leading to plans to re-grade and displace service control members. Further research of driverless trains. Even a partial introduction of automatic train operation would create a surplus of drivers leading to displacements and threats to the security of Train Ops unless they agree to whatever LU demands of them.
