DEVELOPMENT AWARDS
ENTRANCE SCHOLARSHIPS
TWENTY FIVE VICE-CHANCELLOR'S SCHOLARSHIPS FOR SPORT, MUSIC AND THE
PERFORMING ARTS, to the value of 2,000 each, will be awarded on entry to full-time home
undergraduate students who have demonstrated excellence in the fields of sport, music and the arts. For
further information, please see www.durham.ac.uk.
CHORAL SCHOLARSHIPS, to the value of 1,500 a year, are awarded annually by the Chapter of
Durham Cathedral in conjunction with the University. Choral Scholars will be expected to sing in the
Cathedral Choir at Matins and Holy Communion on Sunday mornings, and Evensong daily, except Monday.
Further information may be obtained from the Senior Student Financial Support Secretary, University
Office, Durham, DH1 3HP. Entries should be received by the Senior Student Financial Support Secretary
before mid December. Interviews are held in mid February. (It is regretted that Choral Scholarships are not
normally awarded to science students whose heavy laboratory commitments are not compatible with the
duties of a choral scholar, nor to female students due to the composition of the Choir).
THE LENDRUM UNDERGRADUATE SCHOLARSHIP, to the value of 500, will be awarded annually
to the student from the North-East with the highest qualifications upon entry intending to study Economics
or a subject in combination with Economics. Selection will be determined by the Head of Student Financial
Support and will be influenced by consideration of financial need. The University will inform Mr Chris
Lendrum of the recipient of the award who will be required to contact Mr Lendrum in writing with their
thanks for the award and details of what they intend to use the award for. Students should contact the

ENTRANCE BURSARIES
THE DURHAM GRANT SCHEME. Awards will be made to all eligible full-time home undergraduate
students from 2009-10 onwards. To be awarded 1,300 per year, paid in three equal instalments, the student
will have a household income of below 25,000 per annum.
THE DURHAM GRANT SCHEME (PGCE). Awards will be made to all eligible full-time home PGCE
students from 2009-10 onwards. To be awarded 319 per year, paid in three equal instalments, the student
will have a household income of below 25,000 per annum.
TWO INSTITUTE OF PHYSICS BURSARIES, to the value of 1,000 per year, will be awarded to UK
and Irish nationals starting a degree in Physics or with a significant element of Physics in 2009-10.
OTHER SOURCES OF FINANCIAL SUPPORT
THE ACCESS TO LEARNING FUND (DEPARTMENT FOR BUSINESS INNOVATION AND
SKILLS). Awards from the Access to Learning Fund, which is worth circa 186,000 in the academic year
2009-10, may be made to full-time and part time home students who meet certain criteria set by the
Department of Innovation and Universities and Durham University and who are therefore deemed to be in
need of financial support to complete their studies.
THE UNIVERSITY HARDSHIP FUND. Awards from the University Hardship Fund, which is worth
75,000 in the academic year 2009-10, may be made to students who are not eligible for support from the
Access to Learning Fund, who had a sound financial plan in place before they started their studies which
were compromised by circumstances beyond their control.
THE HELEN LUEN TRUST. Awards from the Helen Luen Trust may be made to students studying at the
Queens Campus who are in need of financial support to continue their studies.
A NUMBER OF MICHAEL CROSS BURSARIES, of 300, will be awarded to undergraduate Physics
students in receipt of financial support from the Access to Learning Fund.
YATES BURSARY, to the value of 300, will be awarded to a Physics student in receipt of financial
support from the Access to Learning Fund.

TWENTY COLLEGE ACCOMMODATION BURSARIES of 750 towards the cost of College

accommodation are available in the academic year 2009-2010. The Colleges Postgraduate Bursaries have
three key objectives: to support the University strategy in relation to attracting high quality postgraduate
students to Durham; to contribute to the development of the postgraduate college experience in Durham; to

ACADEMIC PRIZES (UNDERGRADUATE)
UNIVERSITY-WIDE
THIRTY-TWO UNNAMED SCHOLARSHIPS FOR STUDENTS IN RESIDENCE, to the value of
200, will be awarded annually to students reading for courses at undergraduate level. Students are eligible
to be nominated for these awards at the end of any year of study except their final year, and will be selected
by Heads of Faculties.
THE DE BURY SCHOLARSHIP, to the value of 200, will be awarded annually on the same basis as the
University of Durham Unnamed Scholarships for Students in Residence to candidates for Honours in
Theology.
THE ELLERTON SCHOLARSHIP, to the value of 200, will be awarded annually on the same basis as
the University of Durham Unnamed Scholarships for Students in Residence. All other things being equal,
preference will be given to candidates from North Yorkshire and in particular those who have received their
education at Richmond School.
THE GISBOURNE SCHOLARSHIP, to the value of 200, will be awarded annually on the same basis as
the University of Durham Unnamed Scholarships for Students in Residence.
THE HATFIELD SCHOLARSHIP, to the value of 200, will be awarded annually on the same basis as
the University of Durham Unnamed Scholarships for Students in Residence but restricted to members of
Hatfield College. The Master of Hatfield College shall be consulted about the award.
THE NEWBY SCHOLARSHIP, to the value of 200, will be awarded annually on the same basis as the
University of Durham Unnamed Scholarships for Students in Residence.
THE PEARS SCHOLARSHIP, to the value of 200, will be awarded annually on the same basis as the
University of Durham Unnamed Scholarships for Students in Residence. All other things being equal,
preference will be given to natives of Witton-le-Wear or Bishop-Auckland.
THE PEMBERTON SCHOLARSHIP, to the value of 200, will be awarded annually on the same basis
as the University of Durham Unnamed Scholarships for Students in Residence but restricted to members of
University College. The Master of University College shall be consulted about the award.
THE WINIFRED FOSTER SCHOLARSHIP, to the value of 200, will be awarded annually on the same
basis as the University of Durham Unnamed Scholarships for Students in Residence, but restricted to women
undergraduates.
QUEEN'S CAMPUS-WIDE
FOUR EDE AND RAVENSCROFT PRIZES, to the value of 250 each and funded by an annual donation
from Ede and Ravenscroft, will be awarded to first or second year students studying on any course and year
at Queen's Campus Stockton who have fulfilled one or more of the following criteria: academic excellence;
contribution to the community; personal endeavour.
THE JOHNSON MATTHEY SCIENCE STUDENTS BEST PERSONAL ACHIEVEMENT PRIZE,
to the value of 100, will be awarded annually to the science student at the Queen's Campus whose academic
performance represents the best personal achievement.
THE QUEENS CAMPUS SCIENCE PROJECT PRIZE, to the value of 50, will be awarded annually
to the final year science student at the Queen's Campus with the highest marked dissertation or final year
project
FACULTY OF SCIENCE
TWO ROCHESTER PRIZES, to the value of 100, will be awarded annually to a first year student in the
Faculty of Science on the recommendation of the Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Science).

THREE BERNARD SUNLEY TRAVEL BURSARIES, of the value of 150 each, may be awarded
annually on the joint nomination of the Chairs of the two Boards of Studies to students in the Departments of
Geography and Anthropology to assist in making visits abroad in connection with work for their Final
Honours Examination.
THE DAVID BROOKS MEMORIAL PRIZE, to the value of 100 in Book Tokens, will be awarded
annually for the most original third year dissertation in social anthropology. The award is open to students
of Anthropology in Durham City and students of the Human Sciences Programme at Queen's Campus. The
award of the prize is determined by a panel of judges from this and other Universities.
THE DIANE WATTS MEMORIAL PRIZE, to the value of 150 and established in memory of Diane
Watts, a former student in Health and Human Sciences, will be awarded annually on the recommendation of
the Human Sciences Course Team to a student whose performance in the face of adversity represents a
significant personal achievement.
DEPARTMENT OF ARCHAEOLOGY
THE BIRLEY BURSARIES, to the value of up to 800 towards the cost of travel outside England,
Scotland and Wales, will be awarded annually by the Department of Archaeology to a student studying in
the department and working on a project which is of sufficient merit to warrant financial assistance. More
than one award may be made from the fund in any year and no grant will be made in any year where no
project of sufficient merit is presented for consideration. Applications must be made to the Department of
Archaeology by the 1st June.
THE GIBSON PRIZE IN ARCHAEOLOGY will be awarded annually on the recommendation of the
Chair of the Board of Studies in Archaeology to the undergraduate studying single, joint or combined
honours in Archaeology who submits the best dissertation on British Archaeology.
THE ROSEMARY CRAMP FUND was established on 4 August 1990 in order to honour the achievements
of Professor Rosemary Cramp in her 19 years as Professor of Archaeology in the University of Durham. It is
composed of donations from a large number of individuals, charitable trusts and companies. The aim of the
Fund is to promote archaeological and heritage projects in the wide variety of fields with which Rosemary
Cramp has been associated. The Fund will make grants for projects as follows:- to students and staff of the
Department of Archaeology of Durham University to enable them to undertake extra-curricular projects in
archaeology and heritage, at home and abroad; to assist projects in archaeology and heritage management
more generally, both in Durham and elsewhere. In order to make most effective use of its money, it is

intended that the Fund should have a limited lifetime, disbursing capital as well as interest in amounts which
will enable projects to get off the ground and attract other funding.
THE WM CLARKSON PRIZE will be awarded annually on the recommendation of the Chair of the
Board of Studies in Archaeology to the Level Three undergraduate performing best in the Final Honours Part
Two examinations.
DEPARTMENT OF CHEMISTRY
ELEVEN BP CHEMICALS POSTER PRIZES will be awarded on an annual basis. The first prize will be
worth 200, the second prize will be worth 150 and the third prize will be worth 100. Nine posters will
receive an honourable mention prize of 25.
BP CHEMICALS PRIZE FOR MASTERSHIP OF CHEMISTRY, This prize, first awarded in 1999 and
currently worth 400, will be awarded annually, at the discretion of the Board of Examiners in Chemistry, to
a graduand for the degree of Master of Chemistry.
BP CHEMICAL PRIZE IN PHYSICAL CHEMISTRY, This award, inaugurated in 1994 and currently
worth 200, is made at the discretion of the two Board of Examiners in Chemistry, to an undergraduate who
displays, in level-2 examinations, outstandingly good knowledge.
FOUR CHEMISTRY MERIT PRIZES, to the value of 200, will be awarded annually by the Board of
Examiners in Chemistry to two second year students following any Chemistry degree programme (BSc or
MChem) and to two third year students following the MChem programme, on the basis of a significant
improvement in their end-of-year aggregate, normally from a score of 50% or more in the previous year.
THE GLAXOSMITHKLINE BOOK PRIZES. Each year since 1994 an annually renewable donation
from GlaxoSmithKline has allowed the Board to present to up to forty undergraduates registering in June for
the second year of any of the Chemistry degree programmes (F100, F102, F105, F111) a copy of a textbook
recommended for supplementary reading in organic chemistry. The recipients are selected on the basis of
superior end-of year performance in the modules Core Chemistry 1A and Core Chemistry 1B combined.
THE HARRISON SHEARER BOOK PRIZE, inaugurated in 1980 and currently worth 100, is awarded
annually in memory of Dr Harrison Massey McDougall Shearer (1923-1979), who died in post after serving
in this department as lecturer (from 1959), then senior lecturer (from 1967), in chemical crystallography. The
fund supporting the prize was raised by public subscription. The prize is awarded, at the discretion of the
Board of Examiners in Chemistry, to a graduand for the degree of Bachelor of Science with Honours in
Chemistry. The prize winner is named on the official pass-list and the prize will be presented at the reception
for chemistry graduands on congregation day.
THE INDUSTRIALLY FUNDED PRIZE FOR ORGANIC CHEMISTRY, inaugurated in 1989 and
currently worth 200, is made at the discretion of the Board of Examiners in Chemistry to the undergraduate
with the most meritorious performance in level two organic chemistry (written examination and laboratory
work). The Board will announce the prize winner before June registration for level three tuition. During the
present quinquennium, which began in 2003, this award is being funded by Pfizer Limited.
THE MICHAEL WESTON SCHOLARSHIP, to the value of at least 100, will be awarded annually by
the Board of Studies in Chemistry to a second-year student of Grey College who will be reading at least
three Chemistry modules at Final Honours level in the ensuing year, on the results of at least three Chemistry
modules at Final Honours. The scholarship, funded by public subscription, commemorates Dr Michael
Weston (1927-1992), second tutor in science at Grey College (1961-1981) then senior tutor (1981-1984),
who was simultaneously a lecturer in radiochemistry (1957-1984). The scholarship will not be awarded in
any year in which the Board of Studies considers there is no candidate of sufficient merit. The Board will
notify the award winner at registration in June and the scholarship will be paid in the first week of the
summer vacation.
THE THOMAS WADDINGTON PRIZE, to the value of 200 and established to commemorate Thomas
Cudworth Waddington (1930-1981), Professor of the University in Inorganic Chemistry, will be awarded
annually by the Board of Examiners in Chemistry to an undergraduate displaying, in level two assessments
of inorganic chemistry, outstandingly good knowledge, understanding and laboratory skills.
DEPARTMENT OF CLASSICS AND ANCIENT HISTORY
THE FORSTER PRIZE, to the value of 60, will be awarded annually on the recommendation of the
Board of Examiners in Classics for proficiency in language work.

THE HOW PRIZE, of books to the value of 60, will be awarded annually by the Department of Classics
on the results of the Final Examination for the degree of BA (Hons).
THE MALTBY PRIZE, to the value of 60, will be awarded annually on the recommendation of the Board
of Examiners in Classics for a final year dissertation in Classics by a candidate for Single or Joint Honours
or Combined Studies.
MALTBY PRIZES, to the value of 50, will be awarded from the Maltby Prize Fund on the
recommendation of the Board of Examiners in Classics for outstanding performances by students in their
first or second year.
DEPARTMENT OF EARTH SCIENCES
THE CHEVRON UK AWARD, to the value of 50, will be awarded annually to on the recommendation of
the Professor of Geophysics to the postgraduate or undergraduate of the Department who has made the most
significant contribution in the field of Petroleum-related Geophysics.
THE CHEVRON UK PRIZE, to the value of 75, will be awarded annually on the recommendation of the
Board of Examiners in Earth Sciences to the undergraduate who has submitted the best dissertation for the
degree of BSc in the field of Geophysics.
THE EARTH SCIENCES ESSAY PRIZE, to the value of 100, will be awarded annually on the
recommendation of the Board of Examiners in Earth Sciences to the third year student completing the best
Earth Sciences Essay.
THE EARTH SCIENCES ESSAY PRIZE, is awarded to the student completing the best third year Earth
Sciences essay.
JOHN W MOST FIELDWORK AWARDS, to the value of up to 50 each, may be made annually on the
recommendation of the Board of Examiners in Earth Sciences for the best Earth Sciences fieldwork reports
produced by any students on the BSc or MSci programmes.
THE JOHN W MOST FIELDWORK PRIZE IN EARTH SCIENCES, to the value of 100, may be
awarded annually for the best fieldwork project submitted by final year students for the BSc degree.

Barclays Capital. The prize will be awarded for the best performance in the Monetary Economics option
module.
THE DELOITTE AND TOUCHE ECONOMICS DISSERTATION PRIZE, to the value of 100, will
be awarded annually for the best dissertation in Economics.
THE DELOITTE AND TOUCHE SECOND YEAR PRIZE, to the value of 75 will be awarded annually
by the Board of Examiners in Economics, Finance and Business for the best overall performance in
Economic Principles I: Macroeconomics and Economic Principles II: Microeconomics
THE DELOITTE AND TOUCHE BUSINESS DISSERTATION PRIZE, to the value of 100, will be

awarded annually to the student who achieves the highest mark in a Business / Business Finance dissertation.
THE ERNST AND YOUNG ACCOUNTANCY PRIZE, to the value of 200, will be awarded annually
by the Board of Examiners in Economics, Finance and Business for the best performance in Corporate
Finance.
THE JO MASHEDER PRIZE, to the value of 25, is awarded for the best performance in the
Development Economics module.
THE SHELL INTERNATIONAL FIRST YEAR PRIZES IN ECONOMICS, to the value of 100, will
be awarded annually by the Board of Examiners in Economics, Finance and Business on the basis of
performance in the first year of undergraduate study with special reference to the project in Economic
Methods.
DEPARTMENT OF ENGLISH STUDIES
THE ENGLISH STUDIES ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT AWARD, to the value of 50, will be
awarded every year on the recommendation of the Board of Studies in English to the first year student
achieving the best marks in his or her preliminary honours examinations.
THE BROOKS JOHNSON PRIZE, to the value of 25, for the encouragement of studies in the field of
drama, may be awarded in alternate years on the recommendation of the Chair of the Board of English
Studies, to a postgraduate student engaged in the field of drama or to an undergraduate student reading for
the BA with Honours in English Literature who is pursuing the fullest opportunities of studying drama.
Failing a suitable candidate in the first or second of the above categories, the prize may be awarded to a
student of English Literature, undergraduate or postgraduate.
THE J R WATSON AWARD, to the value of 50, will be awarded annually on the recommendation of the
Board of Examiners to the English student with the best overall performance in Part I Examinations.
THE JUBILEE PRIZE, to the value of 50, will be awarded annually on the recommendation of the Board
of Examiners in English Studies for the best final year dissertation submitted by a candidate for Honours in
English Studies.
ROBIN DIX MEMORIAL PRIZE, to the value of 50, will be awarded annually in memory of Dr Robin
Dix, Lecturer in English Studies, on the recommendation of the Board of Examiners in English for the best
essay on Restoration and Eighteenth-Century Literature or Renaissance Literature.
THE T W CRAIK AWARD, to the value of 50, will be awarded annually on the recommendation of the
Board of Examiners to the English student with the best overall performance in Final Honours Examinations.
DEPARTMENT OF GEOGRAPHY
THREE BERNARD SUNLEY TRAVEL BURSARIES, of the value of 150 each, may be awarded

THE W A MOYES PRIZE, to the value of 35, will be awarded annually on the nomination of the Chair
of the Board of Studies in Geography for proficiency in fieldwork during the second or third year.
THE W B FISHER PRIZE, to the value of 150, will be awarded annually on the recommendation of the
Chair of the Board of Studies in Geography on the results of the Final Honours Examination in Geography.
THE WILLIMOTT PRIZE, to the value of 100, will be awarded annually on the recommendation of the
Chair of the Board of Studies in Geography in conjunction with a member of staff primarily concerned with
the teaching of soil science to the student offering the best specialist field study of soil and/or agriculture
during the year.
DEPARTMENT OF HISTORY
THE EDWARD ALLEN PRIZE, to the value of 70, will be awarded annually on the recommendation of
the Chair of the Board of Studies in History for the best aggregate performance in Preliminary Honours by
Joint or Single Honours Historians.
THE GIBSON PRIZE IN HISTORY, to the value of 100, will be awarded annually on the
recommendation of the Board of Examiners in History for the best dissertation on Local History submitted
by a candidate for Single or Joint Honours or Combined Studies.
THE HISTORY DISSERTATION PRIZE, to the value of 100, is awarded for the best dissertation
submitted as part of the final honours examination.
ALUMNI PRIZE IN HISTORY, to the value of 100, will be awarded annually for the best second year
performance in History.
THE THOMPSON HISTORY PRIZE, to the value of 200, will be awarded annually on the
recommendation of the Board of Examiners in History for the best performance in the Final Examination for
the degree of BA with Honours in History.
DEPARTMENT OF MATHEMATICAL SCIENCES
THE COLLINGWOOD MEMORIAL PRIZE, to the value of 120, may be awarded annually to a
student graduating from this University with a degree in Mathematics who intends to embark in the
following year on a full-time course leading to a research degree in at this or any other University.
THE LYNDON WOODWARD MEMORIAL PRIZE, to the value of 100, will be awarded annually on
the recommendation of the Board of Examiners in Mathematical Sciences to a student graduating with BSc
Honours in Mathematics.
ONE OR MORE MATHEMATICAL SCIENCES SPECIAL PRIZES, to the value of 50 each, may be
awarded on the recommendation of the Board of Examiners in Mathematical Sciences to students graduating
with First Class Honours in Mathematics.
THE PETER ROWE MEMORIAL PRIZE, to the value of 75, will be awarded annually on the
recommendation of the Chair of the Board of Examiners in Mathematics to a candidate for Final Honours in
Natural Sciences or Combined Honours in Arts who is taking options in Mathematics.
DEPARTMENT OF MUSIC
THE EVE MYRA KISCH PRIZE, to the value of 100, will be awarded in June each year to a student in
the Department of Music for proficiency in Music.
THE MICHAEL JAMES SCHOLARSHIP, to the value of 175 and established in 1984 in memory of
Michael James (1951-1981), a student in the Department of Music, will be awarded annually on the
recommendation of the Board of Examiners in Music following the results of the Preliminary Honours
Examination in Music. The Scholarship is to be used for the purchase of books and equipment, for further

tuition in music, for travel in the pursuit of musical studies or for some other purpose approved by the Chair
of the Board of Studies. Where two candidates are considered to be of equal merit the Scholarship may be
divided.
THE ROSALIND DICKINSON PRIZE, to the value of 50, will be awarded annually on the
recommendation of the Board of Examiners in Music to an outstanding candidate in the Final Honours
Examination in Music.
THE SIR THOMAS BEECHAM SCHOLARSHIP is made possible by the generous support of the Sir
Thomas Beecham Trust. An award, made on the basis of competitive selection, is made for three years to a
resident first year student in the Department of Music who, on satisfactory completion of his/her studies,
intends to become a performing musician, and the choice is made by audition in October each year. In the
event that no candidate meets the threshold standards of proficiency that are deemed appropriate to an award
of this high standing, the Department reserves the right to withhold the award. The value of the Scholarship
is 250 per year, so that a full three year scholarship has the total value of 750.
DEPARTMENT OF PHILOSOPHY
THE DOREEN BRETHERTON STUDENTSHIP is awarded from time to time either as a postgraduate
studentship or to an undergraduate of the University of Durham who wishes to change course to Honours in
Philosophy and thus requires an additional year's financial support. If awarded as a postgraduate studentship
the Doreen Bretherton Studentship is to be held by a graduate of the University of Durham for work in the

THE MAX HUNTER MEMORIAL BURSARY, to the value of 150, has been established in memory of
Max Hunter, who was killed in Israel on 12 August 1997. A fund has been set up with donations from
relatives, friends and colleagues and from the proceeds a Bursary will be awarded to an undergraduate law
student in need of financial assistance towards the cost of travel to a meeting or to visit another institution
while in pursuit of their studies. The award will be made on the recommendation of the Board of Studies in

MICHAEL DAVID KUPLAS BURSARY IN LAW, value 1,000. The Kuplas Bursary was established to
support a student (or exceptionally students) who are studying law whilst coping with a disability. The

PUPILLAGES IN INTERNATIONAL AND COMPARATIVE CRIMINAL DEFENCE PRACTICE.
Durham Law School is pleased to announce several mini pupillages awarded as prizes for students of the
undergraduate law module Introduction to Comparative and International Criminal Law run by Professor

Examiners and is awarded to a graduating student who has submitted a dissertation in the History of Art,
which demonstrates critical verve in the handling of the material, an innovative approach to the subject and
has the potential for publication, hence demonstrating their outstanding abilities in research, understanding
of the subject, critical interpretation and presentation skills.
NEVILLE'S CROSS ASSOCIATION AWARD, to the value of 450. The Neville's Cross College
opened in 1921 and during its time produced some of the finest teachers in Britain. Sadly, courses ended in
1986; however, the Neville's Cross Association is still working hard to keep the spirit of the college alive.
The Association donated 15,000 to Durham University and an annual award will be offered to a third year

postgraduate students who are commencing full-time study for a PhD as registered research students at
Durham University. The award comprises: Full payment of tuition fees; A maintenance award at the
nationally agreed rate (to the value of 12,600 in 2007/8); A research training support grant provided to the

13 June 1991, a fund has been set up with donations from relatives, friends and colleagues. From the
proceeds, a Bursary will be awarded to provide travel support for a postgraduate student, registered in either
the Department of Mathematical Sciences or Physics within the ambit of the Centre for Particle Theory. The
purpose of the Bursary (typically one award per year) will be either to allow a student from a developing
country to travel to Durham to join the group in the first instance or for a student already in Durham to travel
to a meeting or visit another institution essential for their research work. The criteria for the award will be (a)
the worthwhile nature of the proposed travel and its benefit to the student's work (b) the financial need and
academic excellence of the student. The award will be made on the recommendation of two nominated
members of the Centre for Particle Theory.
THE PETER ROWE MEMORIAL POSTGRADUATE PRIZE, to the value of 100, is awarded
annually to a student who is a candidate for either the MSc degree in Mathematical Sciences or the MSc
degree in Elementary Particle Physics.

PHD STUDENTSHIPS IN MUSIC. Both studentships provide funding for UK/EU tuition fees and
provide a maintenance stipend at the AHRC level (12,600 in 2007/8). Non-UK/EU applicants will be
required to secure funding from other sources to make up the difference between the UK/EU and the
overseas fee rate (a difference of 6,336 in 2007/8). Applicants should have a minimum of an upper-second

the Doreen Bretherton Studentship is to be held by a graduate of the University of Durham for work in the
University of Durham or in another approved University in the United Kingdom or overseas or by a graduate
of another approved University for work in the University of Durham. It is awarded for one year in the first
instance and, subject to satisfactory progress, will be extended for a second and final year. The holder is
required to pursue an approved course of study or research in the field of Philosophy.

Durham Universitys School of Medicine and Healths contribution to the health and welfare of the people in

a strong current or intended contribution to regional health and social services sectors. The Expansion
Bursaries provide master's awards of 2,500 for home and EU students and 4000 for overseas students

student at Durham University; their department(s) have confirmed that they are academically and
emotionally suitable to participate in the Exchange Scheme; they are accepted by the University of
California as an exchange student. Priority will be given to students whose prior life experiences indicate
that they would benefit from participation in the Exchange Scheme. Students will not normally be
considered for a University of California (UCAL) Student Exchange Bursary if their parents' residual income
exceeds 39,500 per annum and if they already have substantial funding towards their participation in the

recommendation of College Officers to any member of Hatfield College MCR conducting research in any
discipline in which there is a significant Asian component or connection, such connection to be approved by

student of St Chads College with one of the best first class average.
THE WILLIAM JONES SCHOLARSHIP, to the value of 75 will be awarded annually to a student of St
Chads College with one of the best first class average.
A NUMBER OF ST CHAD'S COLLEGE FOUNDATION SCHOLARSHIPS, to the value of 50, will
be awarded annually to students of St Chad's College with the highest 2:1 averages in College.
SENIOR ORGAN SCHOLARSHIP, awarded annually after trials conducted by the Director of Music and
the Organist of Durham Cathedral. The Senior Organ Scholar receives a number of private lessons with one
of the Cathedral Organists as well as a stipend.
TWO JUNIOR ORGAN SCHOLARSHIP, awarded annually after trials conducted by the Director of
Music and the Organist of Durham Cathedral. The Organ Scholars receive a number of private lessons with
one of the Cathedral Organists as well as a stipend.
CHORAL SCHOLARSHIPS, up to twelve scholarships are awarded annually after trials conducted by the
Director of Music and the Organist of Durham Cathedral. The Choral Scholars receive a stipend which they
can use towards private singing lessons.
MICHAEL RAMSEY POSTGRADUATE SCHOLARSHIPS, to the value of 100, will be awarded
annually on the recommendation of departments to postgraduate students of St Chad's College.

THE TRAIDCRAFT FELLOWSHIP, funded jointly by the College and the Traidcraft Fellowship. The
fellowship is tenable for periods between three months and one year, and is designed to further research into
fair trade. Overseas candidates are especially encouraged to apply. The non-stipendiary Fellowship includes
room and board in a one bedroom flat and an annual research grant of 5,000 (pro-rata). Approximate value

JUNIOR POSTGRADUATE FELLOWSHIPS, Junior Postgraduate Fellowships combine postgraduate
study with additional work in College. The value of the fellowships ranges from 500 up to 1,000, and
several may be awarded in any given year. This fellowship may be held in conjunction with other

SENIOR RESEARCH FELLOWSHIPS, approximate value 1500 per term, appointed to experienced
scholars who wish to spend an extended period of time working within the College. Applicants should write

DURHAM CATHEDRAL ARTIST IN RESIDENCE, approximate value 20,000. The College, in
conjunction with Durham Cathedral, Northern Arts, and Sunderland University, sponsors the Durham
Cathedral Artist in Residence. The artist has a studio in the Cathedral precincts but lives in and is a part of
St Chads College. Appointments are for periods of up to one year. Further details can be obtained from

SCHOLARS/WRITERS IN RESIDENCE: From time to time the College appoints a number of nonstipendiary Scholars or Writers in Residence. These Scholars, often holding academic posts with the

ST CUTHBERT'S SOCIETY
THE CHARLES HOLMES PRIZE, to the value of 250, will be awarded to a final year student of
St Cuthbert's Society for outstanding achievement.
TEN NORTON PRIZES, to the value of 50, will be awarded annually on the recommendation of the
Departments for the best first year undergraduate student within St Cuthbert's Society.
THE O W CRAGGS PRIZE, to the value of 70, will be awarded annually to the student achieving the
best academic performance by a St Cuthberts undergraduate in the School of Biological and Biomedical
Sciences.
TIM HUGHES PRIZE, to the value of 100, will be awarded to a part-time student of St Cuthbert's Society
for achievement.
THE APEDAILE SCHOLARSHIP, a two year Research Bursary of 2,000 per year, renewable by
application under competitive conditions for a third (and then again very exceptionally for a fourth) year.
The aim of the award is to help build a part-funded St Cuthberts student up towards full Research Council
funded level. The subject matter of the intended MPhil/PhD is open but preference will be given to a
Research Project with potential Scientific or Economic impact.
THE LAING OROURKE PRIZE, to the value of 100, will be awarded annually for the best academic
performance by a first year.
THE HENRY TUDOR STUDENT AWARD, to the value of 250. The Award will be allocated to up to
20 students for individual Student development. The Award is designed to help students gain financial
support towards career development and charity and/or community work.
THE HENRY TUDOR GROUP AWARD, to the value of 1000. The Award is aimed at a JCR club or
society within the college. It helps students gain financial support for travel, living costs etc for an event,
project, visit or tour which contributes to personal development and promotes the values of St Cuthberts
Society. It is not intended to use to directly support academic activities such as field trips or presenting
papers at conferences.

THE SENIOR TUTOR PRIZE, to the value of 100, will be awarded to a student of St Cuthberts for
sustained and exceptional contribution to the life of St Cuthberts Society.
ST JOHN'S COLLEGE
THE MILLION SHILLING FUND, aims to support the religious education of evangelical students at St
Johns College, having particular regard to benefitting the children of clergy. This is interpreted as meaning
the relief of hardship for those students in need who have clergy parents. Typical grants are of one or two
hundred pounds. Applications are invited in the Michaelmas term and are decided by a committee
comprising the Principal, Bursar, President of Council and two other College members meeting annually in
December.
THE WALLIS ORGAN SCHOLARSHIP, exists to recognize ability and secure the services of an
organist for the College Chapel. The typical grant is three hundred pounds (plus 150 for organ lessons). It
is awarded at the discretion of the Principal of St Johns College to a student at the College.
THE ST JOHNS STUDENT OPPORTUNITIES FUND. The purpose of this fund is to provide relief of
hardship and monies to enable participation and enrichment. Typical grants are of the order of hundreds of
pounds. Grants for in-course bursaries may be made at any time and are decided by a committee comprising
the Principal and Senior Tutor meeting three times each term.
THE SCHOLARSHIP FUND. The fund has two aims:
1. To provide access awards, in-course bursaries and personal development to support students to make the
very best of their time at the University, but who may otherwise struggle financially or be prevented from
accessing all the opportunities available. Typical grants for in-course bursaries are of the order of hundreds
of pounds. Grants for in-course bursaries may be made at any time and are decided by a committee
comprising the Principal, Warden and Senior Tutor meeting three times each term.
2. To fund a post-graduate scholarship. The postgraduate scholarship has a geographic bias towards the
developing world and a subject bias towards Theology and Ministry focus. Typical grants for the
postgraduate scholarship are of the order of 3000-4000. Applications for the post-graduate scholarship
must be routed to the college via University or College academic staff supervising the student.
THE BOWEN BURSARY FUND. This is a travel bursary funded by monies from the estate of David
Bowron, used for relief work for the poor in India. Typical grants are of the order of 200. Applications are
invited in the Epiphany term and are decided by a committee comprising the Principal and Senior Tutor.
ST MARY'S COLLEGE
A NUMBER OF CICELY ALICE CAMPBELL AWARDS, for British undergraduates of St Mary's
College in need of financial assistance, are to be made on the recommendation of the College Council of
St Mary's College. Undergraduates are invited to apply for these awards, but they might also be made at the
suggestion of Departments. Applications should be made to the Principal of St Mary's College by the first
Monday of the Epiphany Term 2008, or the first Monday of the Easter Term 2009.
THE MARY HOLDSWORTH TRAVELLING SCHOLARSHIP, to the value of 75, may be awarded
annually by the College Council of St Mary's College each year to one or more undergraduates of the
College towards the cost of travel beyond the requirements of their course.
THE RUTH BOSTOCK MEMORIAL PRIZE, to the value of 40, will be awarded annually to a second
year student of St Mary's College who in the opinion of the Board of Examiners in English Studies submits
the best long essay for the "Special Topic" course.
TWO BEATRICE HOLLINGSWORTH AWARDS will be awarded annually on the recommendation of
the Principal of St Mary's College and the Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Science). The Awards are open to
graduates of St Mary's College who stay on in the College to work for a higher degree in the Faculty of
Science.
A NUMBER OF MARGARET FERGUSSON SCHOLARSHIPS, to the total value of 400, may be
awarded by the College Council of St Mary's College each year to one or more undergraduates or
postgraduates of the College towards the cost of study or travel in Mediterranean countries. Preference
would be given in the first instance to students in the Departments of Classics, Archaeology, Theology or
Modern Languages. Applications should be made to the Principal of St Mary's College by the first Monday
of the Epiphany Term or the first Monday of the Easter Term.

TREVELYAN COLLEGE
THE HELENA BISS SCHOLARSHIP, to the value of 450 and tenable at Trevelyan College, will be
awarded by the Bursaries Committee of the College to students in the field of Classics. The Bursary is open
to undergraduates of any year.
TWO JOAN BERNARD SCHOLARSHIPS, to the value of 200, to be awarded to the best performing
second year students in the Faculty of Arts, who attain a first class average assessment in that year.
THE MARION ZUNZ TRAVEL BURSARY, to the value of 500 per annum, is offered to an
undergraduate or postgraduate student of Trevelyan College for overseas fieldwork, broadly related to the
natural world or associated ecological or sustainability issues.
FIVE SIR JAMES KNOTT SCHOLARSHIPS, to the value of 100 each for the purchase of books, will
be awarded to first year undergraduates of Trevelyan College residing in the counties of Northumberland,
Durham, Tyne and Wear and Cleveland. The awards are made on grounds of academic achievement,
motivation and financial need.
SIX TREVELYAN SOCIETY PRIZES, to the value of 100, will be awarded for excellent performance
in the second year examinations. The six prizes will be shared equally amongst the three faculties.
A NUMBER OF TREVELYAN TRUST TRAVEL BURSARIES, to the combined value of 1,500 and
tenable at Trevelyan College, are open to students for travel or field work related to current or future
academic work. The Bursaries will be awarded by the Bursaries Committee of the College.
ANITA MILNE SCHOLARSHIPS, to the value of 200, are available to help support postgraduate
research students with travel costs associated with academic activities related to their research programme.
A NUMBER OF TREVELYAN COLLEGE SCR TRAVEL BURSARIES, normally to the combined
value of 500 a year. These are open to non-finalist Trevelyan College undergraduates, engaged upon a nonacademic, voluntary, charitable community project either in the UK or overseas. Theses are not intended for
charity fund raising purposes but can be used to support charitable work.
THE GREENWOOD MERIT SCHOLARSHIP, to the value of 400, open to Trevelyan College students
who wish to travel, to extend their study of China or of the Chinese language.
THE NIGEL AND SUSAN MARTIN ACADEMIC SCHOLARSHIPS, Initially, one scholarship to the
value of 200 awarded to the second year Mathematics student who has the highest average above 70% in
the end of year examinations. If no mathematics student fulfils that criteria, it will be awarded to the second
year student with the highest average above 70% in Natural Sciences provided that the student has taken at
least two mathematics modules. If no student fulfils either criteria it may be awarded to the second year
student in the Faculty of Science with the highest average above 70%.
UNIVERSITY COLLEGE
THE HUNTER DAVIES PRIZE, an award of up to 100 for the best piece(s) of journalism in Palatinate,
the student newspaper of Durham University, as determined by the Master and Senior Man of University
College and the Editor of Palatinate.
JOHN E CROWTHER BURSARY FOR MATHEMATICS AND SPORT, awarded to a penultimate year
undergraduate Mathematical Sciences student at University College and making a significant contribution to
college sport.
UNIVERSITY COLLEGE BURSARY FUND, formerly the University College Prize, provides travel
bursaries for undergraduates and support for students in financial difficulties. Monies are disbursed at the
discretion of the Master of University College in consultation with the Senior Tutor.
UNIVERSITY COLLEGE CANON CHASE MEMORIAL FUND, awards of up to 300 made to
undergraduates for contributions to University College Chapel.
UNIVERSITY COLLEGE DURHAM TRUST UNDERGRADUATE TRAVEL AWARDS, an award
of up to 300 to undergraduate students of University College for travel, but not in connection with a
students degree programme (e.g. field trips, dissertation work).
UNIVERSTIY COLLEGE SKENE BURSARY, awards of up to 300 each, for travel and contributions to
College.

A NUMBER OF JOHN LOVEDAY PRIZES FOR UNIVERSITY COLLEGE UNDERGRADUATES,

to the value of 300, will be awarded annually to undergraduates of University College for contributions to
the College Chapel and academic excellence in Classics.
THE UNIVERSITY COLLEGE SENIOR COMMON ROOM TRAVEL GRANT, to the value of 300,
will be awarded annually to a postgraduate student for fieldwork, library visit or conference attendance.
USTINOV COLLEGE
VAN MILDERT COLLEGE
THE VAN MILDERT COLLEGE STUDENT SUPPORT FUND provides support for students in
financial difficulties. Monies are allocated at the discretion of the Master in consultation with the Senior
Tutor.
THE VAN MILDERT COLLEGE TRAVEL BURSARY FUND provides travel bursaries for
undergraduates which are awarded, on the basis of annual competition, by the Master in consultation with
the College Officers and the JCR President.
THE JUDY TURNER TRAVEL BURSARY, of variable values per year, will be awarded to a Van
Mildert student whose travel has great academic potential.
THE VAL MILLER TRAVEL BURSARY, to the value of 300, will be awarded to a Van Mildert student
whose travel includes working with underprivileged children's projects.
THE DAVID ELLERY TRAVEL BURSARY, to the value of 150, will be awarded to a student whose
travel involves Modern Languages.
THE VAN MILDERT COLLEGE TRUST RESEARCH SCHOLARSHIP, to the value of 10,000 per
year, will be awarded every three years. The Trustees invite applications for the 3-year Research
Scholarship from candidates of any nationality who must possess, or expect to obtain, a 1st class degree or
equivalent and demonstrate outstanding potential to undertake high-level research. The appointed scholar
must register for a full-time PhD at Durham University in any discipline appropriate to the research activities
of the University. The Scholarship covers fees and a stipend (currently 10k per annum) plus a
books/expenses allowance (currently 1,000). Complimentary accommodation is provided in College and
the award-holder also has the opportunity to act as a Resident Tutor to the Colleges undergraduate student
community. Prospective candidates should contact the Master for further details of the award which is next
due to be tenable from October 2012.
