Our cities are dying physically. In most city centres some of the oldest and
finest buildings are' crumbling : literally falling to pieces .. In the one hand, the
'foundations are being shaken by all the heavy traffic and, on the other hand, the
bricks and mortar are bcing eaten away by the fumes from the traffic. It's a slow
process but it's going on even though you can't see it.
Far more serious things are hiiPpening: The buildings can always be replaced
but what about the air ? You can hardly breathe it any more in our cities. And think
of the noise. Nowadays most city centres are slimply too noisy to live in . We've got
to become its master and not its slave.

In I 877 an Italian astronomer named Schiaparellinoticed some dark markings
on the surface of Mars. He called them "canali", which, by the way, doesn't
necessarily mean canals in English. Later an American named Lowell studied these
markings. He. said that they were canals and that intelligent beings had put them
there. Since then other astronomers with better equipment have also been observing
Mars and they haven't seen any canals there. Since 1965 we've also had fairly good.
photographs of the surface of Mars. We got them from a space probe; Mariner 4. It
went past Mars and sent back photographs and measurements. Since 1971 we've

When Margaret went into Wilson's office, she noticed that he looked very
tired. In fact, he looked awful. She knew it was not a good time to ask for the rise,
but she felt she had to. She tried to think of something casual to say first. It'was
always best to begin such conversations casually.
"Uh .,. you're looking a bit tired," she said. Wilson sighed. He told her he had
just seen the Financial Controller, the man who told everybody at the BBC how
much they could spend.
" As usual, he said I was, spending too much. It wasn't a very pleasant
conversation," he said. Then he mentioned that he had a headache. Margaret began
to feel sorry for him. She offered to get some aspirins fOThim from the canteen.
"You needn't bother. I can go there myself," he said.
"Oh, but I'm going to the canteen anyway. It's no trouble," ,she protested.

It isn't strictly true that one half of the world is rich and the other half is poor. It
is one-third that is very rich and two-thirds that are very poor. People in the rich
thiJ:d don't realize the enormous difference between them and the other two thirds.
A very simple example is that a dog or a cat'in North America eats better than a
child in the poorer countries. A fisherman in South America may be catching fish
which is processed into pet food and yet his own children are not getting enough
protein for their - bodies to develop properly. Although a lot of the world;s natural
resources like oil come from these poorer countries, we in the richer countries are
probably using sixty times as much of these resources as a person in Asia or Africa.
The richer countries are in a position to dictate to suppliers what kind of prices they
are prepared to pay for these natural resources. In some cases the .process have
gone down. In others they have remained steady. But ,the prices the richer countries
get for their own exports have continlled to rise. So they ,are getting richer and

"Your request is out of the question," the FC said. Robert had difficulty
controlling himself, but he managed somehow. He explained that he wanted the
money in order to make more programs.
"And why do you want to do that?" the FC asked sharply. Again, Robert almost
lost his temper. "Because more and more people are listening to my department's
programs. There's a great demand for them," he answered.
The FC did not seem to believ~ him. But Robert had a report on the numbers
of listeners to all EBC programs. The FC became less confident. Robert threw the
report dOWn on the table and told him to read it.

Linda had to go to Brighton one evening. She decided she would rather take a
train than go by car. But when she got to the station, she found that only half the
trains were running. Some of the drivers had gone on strike.
Linda wondered if there was any point in waiting. Just then she saw Margaret
Dickinson. She was going to Brighton, too. "Come on. We'll push through the
crowd;" she said.
A long queue was waiting in front of the gate for the Brighton train. They
joined it. They talked about the strike. "It's time we women went on strike, too. At
the EBC, I mean," Margaret said .. "They think they can pay us less because we're
women. We have to get equal rights in pay and every thing. We have to be treated
exactly the same as men are! Exactly the same!"
Just then the gate was opened. Everybody began to push. The queue became a
wild crowd. A man next to them pushed Margaret aside and got in front. .
"There aren't any gentlemen left any more. Men' don't even know how to' treat

gal'ages have special equipment that does such things very thoroughly.
I Margaret took after her father; she did not like being overcharged.' She knew
tha;t garages do this sometimes. Sometimes they even charge. for work they have
ne-\rer done. She told the mechanic at the garage not to do any extra .work; she
wa~ted the spark plugs cleaned, and nothirtgmore. Then she left, saying she would
be back in a little while.
.
When Margaret came back, the cashier handed her a bill for 1. Margaret
knew this was more than it should cost to have the spark plugs cleaned. Then the
ca~hier said they had put new ones in. Margal'et decided she was not going to stand
for this, and began to get angry.
"But the plugs were worn out; what else could we do?" the cashier protested.
"How long should these new spark plugs last? More than a few months?" Margaret
derbanded.
"Of course! Much longer than t,~at!" the cashier said with great
,
em~hasis.
I :'W ell, then, put the old ones back in. I had new spark plugs in only a few
mopths ago, and Ihad the job done here!" Mllrgaret said.

communicate with Americans? Can they understand me.? Learners of English often
ask : What are the differences between British and American English ? How
important are these diffrences ?
Certainly, there are some differences between British and American English.
There are a few differences in grammar. For example, speakers of British English
say "in hospital" and "Have you a pen?". American said "in the hospital" and "Do
you have a pen?". Pronunciation is sometimes different. Americans usually sound
the r's in words like "bird" and "hurt". Some speakers of British English do not sound
the r's in these words. There are differences between British and American English
in spelling and vocabulary. For example, "colour" and " honour" are British.

Most slang words are used more in speaking than in writing. For this reason,
few of them can be found in dictionaries.
Most Americans know about 10,000 to 20,000 words. About 1,000 to 2,000 of
these words are slang. However slang words are among those used most often.
Slang words are made up by special groups such as workers, students and
musicians. They are used to describe a new object, experience, or idea. At first only
the members of the special groups understand the slang words. Later, some of the
slang words are used by other people.

Language shows the way that man looks at the world around him. Man lives in
a world of words. By talking to one another, people are able to know and to
understand one another. A people's language allows them to do this.
But not all the people of the world speak the same language. This can cause
people and nations not to understand or agree with one another. Different languages
see the world in different ways.
Each group of people thinks that its language is the best. Other languages
seem strange or wrong. But each language is clear to the people that speak it.
Every language in the world has words that tell the time, age, sex, and the way
of life of the people that speak it. The language of a nation shows the customs and
values of its people.

body of a deer on the back of one of his horses. But, he has stopped to investigate
the strange sounds that he has heard coming from the telegraph wire. By putting his
ear against the pole, he can hear the sounds coming over the wire clearly. He thinks

Producing food from farms under the sea is a possibility in the future. Food
grown in the sea could help solve the problem of many of the world's people do not
have enough food.
Some scientists believe that some day the sea will be used to make electric
