BRUNEI DARUSSALAM
C & F Engineering
Sdn Bhd
Introduction
C & F Engineering is a private company established under the law of Negara Brunei Darussalam since 2000.
We are the Negara Brunei Darussalam formed the contractor with JKR (Jabatan Kerja Raya) standard trenchless
technologies including the provision of auger boring, horizontal directional drilling, underground utility installations,
electricity equipments installation and low voltage and high voltage power cable installation.
Our primary aim is to reduce the environmental impact of its clients infrastructure. Trenchless technology provide as
solution that reduces the environmental risks associated with open excavation. C & F Engineering does however
recognize that its activities still have the potential to cause harm.
C & F Engineering will act at all time to prevent pollution, use resource efficiently, and to limit the impact of our
operations upon other. C & F Engineering shall comply with legal requirements and other requirements applicable to its
activities. C & F Engineering are committed to continual improvement and aim to exceed its own and its clients
expectations.
For more detail, clients should contact C & F Engineering to determine if their requirements can be meet.
Capabilities
With the purchase of Vermeers D33X44 directional drill machine, C & F Engineering capable of installing conduits,
ducts and piping by horizontal directional drill raging 50 mm to 600 mm in diameter with distances typical up to 200
meters in one pull. Longer distances and large diameters can be achieved but need to be considered on a case by case
basis. The purpose of this document is to provide guidance on how the HDD is likely to be undertaken until such time as
a specialist contractor is contacted, the contents of this report should be treated as Provisional because there are
several options that could be employed depending on the type and size of the drilling machine used and the preference
of the contractor for other issues.

1. Preparation of Site
An all-weather access to the entrance and exit sites for the HDD operation must be constructed and a level hard
standing area for the drill equipment prepared at each of these sites as follow:
location, pitch and roll the drill head. From this information the operator know the location of the drill head at all
times. The operator uses the information to maintain the preplanned path of the bore. The accuracy of the drilling is
verified by comparing the coordinates of the actual location of the drill bit against the plane drill profile. If these a
major difference between the actual and planned location of the drill bit, the operator is able to correct the actual
profile by pulling back to a correct position of the planned profile and begin re-drilling. Once the drill bit exits the
other end of the drill hole, the drill head is removed and a Reamer is attached to the drill string.
8 C & F ENGINEERING SDN BHD
Depending of the diameter of the pipe to be installed, several reaming with progressively large diameter reamers
may be necessary (i.e. with a 24 inch diameter pipe, the firs reaming could be with an 16 inch reamer, the second
reaming with a 24 inch reamer and the third reaming with a 32 inch reamer). During the reamer process, drilling fluid
is pumped under pressure thought the drill string to the reamer.
As the drill rig pulls the reamer back, drill pipe is attached continuously behind the reamer for the subsequent
reaming and pipe pulling operations.
When the bore hole has been reamed out to the correct diameter the back reamer is sent back down the bore one
and two more times to ensure that the hole is clear of any large object and that the slurry in the hole is well mixed.
This prepares the hole for the pipe to be pulled in. Once the driller is satisfied that the hole is clear and ready for the
pipe, the pull head is connected to the drill string via Swivel. The swivel prevents the clients pipe from rotation
during the pullback.
Prior the pullback, the clients pipe, which has had a pull head welded on to it, has be prepared and hydrostatically
tested by the client in a single length. The length being equivalent to or greater that the length of the drilled hole.
The clients pipe is the pulled back toward the exit area by the drill rig.
EXCECUTION
The Horizontal Directional Drilling Technology is a modern and innovative technology of pipe and cable lying, which
replaces the brutality of open cut trenches with gentle drilling through injection. It uses the principle of high pressure
injection of drilling suspensions, combined with the mechanical rotation of drilling tools.
The Steel pipe installing accuracy by HDD is provided by the permanent electromagnetic location of the drill head.
Trench less directional drilling with P.D.E. Technology is the ideal procedure for areas with certain specific features:
Areas where open cut trenches are difficult and expensive (railways, highways, roads, water courses, clay
sand, other existing installations, runways etc.).
Heavily urbanized areas (buildings and underground installations, crossings etc.).
Areas which impose the protection of environment (protected parks, reservations, archaeological sites etc.)
PILOT DRILL
From the start pit, the remotely controlled drill head is advancing underground. The high pressure drilling
suspension from the rotating drill head does accomplish the pilot hole. This suspension (Water, Bentonite and
/or special additives) is dislocating the soil, larger spoils being pressed against the tunnel wall and finer particles
being transported along the tunnel with the drilling fluid to the start pit. (Pilot will maintain required depth from
the lowest invert of the last pipe).
REAMING
After the drill head reaches accurate the target pit, the adequate reamer for the job will be attached. Rotating
the reamer through the pilot hole, it will widen it, to enable the simultaneous of the product.
1. Ripper Reamer
HDD back reamers designed for high mixing and pumping action in sticky clay ground
conditions. Carbide cutters are precisely placed to provide smooth even
cutting action.
2. Fluted Reamer
Vermeer fluted reamers include robotically applied carbide mesh grit hard
facing to add longevity. And theyre available with rotary or Shark Teeth to
create an aggressive cutting action. Ideal for rugged ground
conditions ranging from hard pan and soft rock to cobble.

SENSOR TEHNIQUE
The three-dimensional localization of the drill head is based on electromagnetic wave emission from a
transmitter mounted in the drill tool. A data receiver (with a data screen) above the ground is receiving the
signals send by the transmitter. So the
precise position of the drill head can be
located.
PITCH Point

LOCATOR
The data di splay screen is streamlined to provide transmitter roll, pitch, signal strength and temperature in a single
column view. The locating display is free from clutter.
TRANSMITTER
Its picture-driven menu structure removes language as a barrier to using the system anywhere in the world. The menu
and screen views are easily navigated with a single switch/trigger interface.
The real-time, birds-eye view provides operators with critical on-the-fly steering ability and directly contributes to on-thejob productivity and moneysaving opportunities.
The complete system includes a handheld receiver, F Series display, and battery charger rechargeable lithium-ion
batteries to power the receiver and remote display, DC power cable as an option to power the remote display from the
drill rig, and carry case.
The DigiTrak LWD (Log-While-Drilling) DataLog System allows you to collect and store drill data electronically.
The data is recorded using an F5 receiver and then it is uploaded to a computer for analysis, printing, saving, and emailing. The following types of data can be measured and recorded with the LWD DataLog system:
Depth
Pitch
Elevation change (surface topography)
Fluid pressure, when using an F5 fluid pressure transmitter
Pullback force and mud pressure, when using a DigiTrak TensiTrak transmitter
Transmitter heading information, when using a DigiTrak SST (steering) transmitter
System Components include the following:
F5 Receiver A locater or receiver with DataLog menus used to display and record transmitter data; the data is then
uploaded from the receiver to a computer.
F5compatible Transmitter A battery- or cable-powered device located in the drill head with sensors that
continuously measure and transmit information about the below-ground drill head or product pull-force that the aboveground receiver detects and displays.
LWD Software The computer application used for uploading data from the receiver to a computer and for working
with the uploaded data in the computer.
Upload Adapter A USB device required for the computer to communicate with the F5 Receiver to upload data.
