Student Accommodations
In order to maximize their experience at The Ohio State University (OSU) and get involved in the
university community, it is recommended that incoming exchange students live on campus. Housing on
campus is limited (not guaranteed) and only offered after students are accepted to OSU. Undergraduate
students who are under 22 years of age may be offered housing in a variety of undergraduate residence
halls. Room rates typically range from $2,920 to $3,750 per semester. Both undergraduate and graduate
students 22 years old by the date of arrival in Columbus may be eligible for single or double rooms in
University Graduate, Professional and Nontraditional Housing on campus. Students bringing dependents
with them to OSU may be eligible to live at Buckeye Village.

Off-campus housing is also an option that exchange students may choose. Students who wish to live offcampus are responsible for securing their own housing. Residences that are located off-campus are
owned and operated by private individuals or companies, and OIA is unable to make any arrangements
on behalf of students. However, there is limited assistance available through the Office of Neighborhood
Services and Collaboration (http://offcampus.osu.edu/). Safety and the availability of public transportation
should be taken into consideration when evaluating possible off-campus accommodations.
The exchange institution will arrange the following type of student accommodations:
dormitory

hotel/hostel

Students seeking additional help and information for off-campus housing can visit Neighborhood
Service and Collaboration (offcampus.osu.edu). NSC maintains an online housing search with
information on accommodations both within walking distance and driving distance to the Ohio
State campus. NSC also has safety information, utility company resources and legal referrals,
and they can assist students when looking for roommates.

Emergency Medical and Routine Health Care Facilities

Please provide information on the location of both emergency and routine medical facilities in
geographic relation to the exchange institution and student accommodations:
For emergencies, both in-patient and outpatient, students should visit the Ohio State Medical Center
(http://medicalcenter.osu.edu). The Wilce Student Health Center (shc.osu.edu) is available for
standard clinical out patient care. All facilities are on campus and are 5-15 minutes away from oncampus housing locations.
All incoming exchange students are required to carry Ohio State University Student Health Insurance.
For the 2013-2014 academic year, health insurance was $1,070 per semester. More information on its
coverage and costs can be found at: http://shi.osu.edu.

Exchange Institution Emergency Contact for Students

All Ohio State exchange institutions are required to have an on-site emergency contact person at the
exchange institution who can respond on a 24/7 basis to student emergencies. Please indicate the
name and contact information for your emergency contact person.
Contact Name: Caroline Omolesky (contact information above)

Emergency Services Phone Number in Host Country

How do students obtain emergency services if the Exchange Institution Emergency Contact Person
is not available? Is there a national or city emergency phone number which can be called in the
event of fire, personal injury or assault, traffic or pedestrian accident, medical emergency, or other?
Does the emergency services number have English speakers? Please describe what is available
and provide appropriate phone numbers.
In the event of an emergency, students are encouraged to call 911 in order to be connected with
Ohio States Department of Public Safety (http://www.ps.ohio-state.edu/). This campus unit can
address many different kinds of emergencies as well as other services (i.e., the Buckeye Alert
System, escorts, etc.)
There are four phone numbers published by The Ohio State University Department of Public Safety for
students to use to contact help:
1. 911 for emergency
2. (614) 247-6300 for Public Safety Administration
3. (614) 292-6677 for University Security Services
4. (614) 292-2121 for University Police
** 911 is a national phone number that can be used in any emergency situation that requires
immediate assistance.

On-Site Orientation
Exchange institutions are required to provide an on-site orientation to Ohio State exchange students
within 2-3 days after their arrival to the exchange institution. At a minimum, the following topics must
be addressed: local security, safety, and health guidelines and resources, exchange institution
emergency procedures, exchange institution guidelines and expectations for student conduct, tour of
exchange institution, classrooms, and immediate environs, how to use public transportation, how to
make local and international phone calls, review of housing and meal facilities and schedule, and
program itinerary. Please indicate the name and contact information for the person(s) who will be
responsible for providing the on-site orientation to the Ohio State exchange students. Please
describe how and when your institution provides the on-site orientation.

Orientation is offered to new international students before every new academic term (semester) at The
Ohio State University. Orientation introduces new international students to Ohio State and Columbus,
allows them to meet other new students, and covers important and helpful topics such as campus
resources, safety, and health insurance. Representatives from offices around campus introduce
themselves and the services provided by their offices.
There is also an exchange student-only meeting before each semester specifically to address the
unique needs of the population of exchange students. Course registration, fee payment, and cultural
opportunities are the main topics of this meeting.
