Our CMC 56, which we launched in 1990, was the first testing device for protective relays
with which the test variables were displayed in a vector diagram on the PC, where they
could be directly set. This marked the beginning of our quest to continually develop new
features for our devices and to make testing more convenient for users.
In line with this tradition, Test Universe 3.0 has been given a fresh new look and feel. The
user interface is more intuitive thanks to the new menu concept. The so-called tool tips
have been updated with more details to provide you with fast assistance, should you have
questions on any individual functions. New tutorial videos provide step-by-step instructions
on how to use Test Universe. The screen contents can be freely arranged in line with your
personal requirements, which can prove extremely useful, particularly when working on
small laptop screens.
The topic of testing a line differential protection system via GPS receiver was already
addressed at the very first OMICRON User Convention in 1993. Since this time, we have not
only offered the necessary hardware and software functionalities for time-synchronized
testing in the field of protection engineering, but also the accompanying accessories.
From version 3.0 onwards, Test Universe supports our new GPS-controlled CMGPS 588
synchronization unit with integrated antenna. The device operates as a PTP Grandmaster
Clock in line with IEEE 1588-2008 / IEEE C37.238-2011 and is ideally suited for synchronizing starting times when testing with two or more CMC test devices, as well as making
measured value recordings with real-time stamps. However, it can of course also be
synchronized with other PTP sources already present on site.
The PQ Signal Generator software module turns a CMC testing device into a signal source
for generating all kinds of mains interference as per IEC 61000-4-30 (-7, -15). The functionality of this module has once again been significantly extended with the new version of
Test Universe.
It makes the CMC the first commercial product to also provide easy support for the
stringent testing in line with IEC 62586. This new standard prescribes test signals with
which multiple power quality phenomena are simulated at the same time. An extensive
testing library, consisting of 12 different OMICRON Control Center (OCC) files, is available
to provide support in performing the type tests required by these standards.
The Annunciation Checker module offers commissioning engineers effective support when
testing the assignment of the various message types (static messages, shot-triggered messages, etc.) from the source to the corresponding message locations (e.g. control centers).
It also helps to check if the wiring has been connected correctly.
Test Universe 3.0 also allows users to copy message types which have already been defined
for use as templates. This makes setting up test sequences faster and even more convenient. Once a test has been defined (e.g. for bay 1), this can then simply be copied and
applied to other applications (e.g. for bays 2 to 20). Tests which involve the control station
or other areas can then be performed at very high quality with minimum input time.
USB interface
One of our very first innovations was to allow users to control CMC testing devices from
their PC via the parallel printer interface. After a few years, this was then superseded by
the Ethernet interface. USB interfaces are now also well suited to handling communication
between a PC and CMC device.
From Test Universe 3.0 onwards, we therefore support USB interface connections with
our CMC testing devices. Many users will certainly appreciate having this user-friendly
interface available as an alternative.1
New orders
New CMC testing devices supplied with Test Universe 3.02 can also be controlled via the
USB interface as standard.
Orders placed since the end of 2012
All CMC testing devices 2 delivered since November 2012 already include the latest
processor board with additional USB interface (NET-1C). All that users need to do in order
to use this interface is perform the free-of-charge software update to version 3.0 (see
page 10).
Retrofitting
Older CMC testing devices 2 can be retrofitted with a new processor board (NET-1C
upgrade), so that they can also use a USB interface . If you are interested in this, please get
in touch with us (see page 10).
Although Ethernet-based network connections offer many advantages, they are more complex and often
require significant IT expertise during installation (firewall, IP addresses, etc.).
