MEET YOUR NEIGHBOR: LYDIA YODER

Many of us know Lydia as the Secretary of the
Weinland Park Community Civic Association for the
past two years. Did you know, though, about her
love of creating art? She is a founding member of
the WP Red Circle art group and will have work
featured in the upcoming Weinland Park
Calendar, which will be distributed at the
Festival (see more below).
Lydia doesnt have much art work around the
house. She loves to give it away as much as she
loves making it! One exception is a painting
(shown in the picture) using a marbling technique
she learned while visiting relatives in Turkey.
Besides exploring new mediums, she mostly
enjoys drawing and watercolor.

While growing up, her mother turned everyday

activities into artistic endeavors and always
appreciated the beauty in common things, including gardening and cooking. That is a philosophy
Lydia would like to pass on to the children she
teaches. God gifted me in working with kids and
creating art, and I love integrating them.
Early this year, Lydias family expanded. With her
husband Jason, she welcomed baby Annelise into
the world. Now it is even easier to interact with
the neighborsbabies smile and attract conversation. Jason and I are very happy with our decision
to move to Weinland Park. There is so much
potential, I love working with the children and
parents in the Red Circles project the most.

GREETINGS FROM TEXAS

Several members of our Family-Centered Community
Change Council (FCCC) represented Weinland Park
while visiting San Antonio this past May where they
discussed common issues facing all three FCCC sites
(the third being Buffalo, NY) and the Annie E. Casey
Foundation staff. In related news, the WP FCCC
recently hired its first full-time staffer; Ms. Tanja
Jones, who will be undertaking a pilot to lead 20 local
families out of poverty.

diabetes. Bacteria in your mouth
may cause inflammation in other
parts of the body and lead to a
weak immune system.

Here are some tips to good oral health:

Brush twice daily with a soft (not medium) bristle
toothbrush
Floss once dailypick a routine time and build up
slowly by only flossing a single, extra tooth each
night
Go your dentist regularly as some tarter/plaque can
only be removed by a professional--schedule your
next 6-month cleaning at the end of your appointment

GOOD THINGS ARE

COMING!

You may have noticed that D&J Carryout and Kellys

Carryout were closed this past June. Keep an eye
on these sites as exciting, new community spaces
are developing.

Check out the preliminary work being done on the

former 3M site at 5th St. and 5th Ave. The land is
being graded and seeded, with a wall to be
constructed along the north side.

Stay safe this 4th of July, and check out fireworks with
your family and friends. Here are a few celebrations.
You may even be able to catch some of the action from
your backyard.
