NARAL Pro-Choice Texas Foundation led a

coalition to establish contraceptive equity
in Texas. The work of this coalition resulted in a new law requiring insurance
companies to cover contraception prescriptions in the same way they cover other prescriptions. The bill took effect September
1st, 2001.

Overview of accomplishments
Who We Are:
NARAL Pro-Choice Texas Foundation, an
affiliate of NARAL Pro-Choice America, is a
statewide, nonprofit organization. NARAL
Pro-Choice Texas Foundations mission is
to support and protect as a fundamental
right and value, Texan families ability to
make personal and private decisions regarding reproductive health through public
education, training, organizing, and research.
Our track record of accomplishments includes several successful public education
campaigns. Highlights are listed below,
starting with our most recent project.

Crisis Pregnancy Centers

Public Awareness Campaign
NARAL Pro-Choice Texas Foundation
launched this campaign to educate the
public and policy makers about crisis pregnancy centers (CPCs) and whether they are
an appropriate recipient of state family
planning funds.
In December 2005, NARAL Pro-Choice
Texas Foundation produced a report titled
Crisis Pregnancy Centers in Texas: A Hidden Threat to Womens Health? that generated statewide news coverage. This report

highlights controversial new state funding

for CPCs.

Emergency Contraception Access

Campaign
NARAL Pro-Choice Texas Foundation
launched a campaign in 2002 to help educate Texans about emergency contraception (EC) and to reduce barriers to access to
EC.
NARAL Pro-Choice Texas Foundation published a county-by-county resource guide
for reproductive healthcare titled Where
Will a Woman Go? A Guide to Reproductive
Services in Texas. This guide, which included a list of EC providers in Spanish and
English, was distributed to rape crisis centers and social service agencies throughout
the state.
As part of this campaign, in collaboration
with the Institute for Reproductive Health
Care Access, NARAL Pro-Choice Texas
Foundation contacted over 600 physicians
in selected Texas counties to provide them
with educational materials about the importance of offering EC to their female patients. As a result of this outreach effort,
NARAL Pro-Choice Texas Foundation succeeded in expanding the number of Texas
counties where patients could access EC.

Access Texas: A Campaign to

Improve Access to Reproductive
Healthcare
NARAL Pro-Choice Texas Foundation
launched this campaign in 2001 to conduct
research and improve access to reproductive healthcare in Texas hospitals.
As part of this campaign, NARAL ProChoice Texas Foundation conducted Texas
first statewide survey of hospital emergency rooms to determine whether they
were offering emergency contraception to
survivors of sexual assault. The survey revealed that 67 percent of the surveyed
emergency rooms did not offer EC to rape
victims.
Also, NARAL Pro-Choice Texas Foundation
conducted a survey of Texas family practice residency programs to determine
whether abortion training was routinely
offered to residents.
In collaboration with the Womens Health
and Family Planning Association of Texas,
NARAL Pro-Choice Texas Foundation organized a medical abortion training for
family practice physicians interested in
integrating abortion services into their
practices.
