UP EXPRESS UPDATE: EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

With Union Pearson (UP) Express, Toronto joins the ranks of other world class cities with an express rail service
between downtown and the airport.

UP Express will provide travellers with a fast, simple route that takes 25 minutes, and departs every 15 minutes for
19.5 hours a day. For the time-strapped traveller, UP Express will provide certainty with frequent and predictable
service.

UP Express is modeled after dedicated links in leading European and Asian cities like Stockholm, London, Oslo and
Tokyo.

To inform the fare structure, quantitative and qualitative research was completed on market trends and passenger
demographics, as well as benchmarking against local alternative transportation modes.

Fare pricing includes fare-by-distance and variable pricing for families, children and frequent users such as airport
employees.

For an adult one-way trip between Union Station and Toronto Pearson, staff is proposing a fare of $19 with the
PRESTO card or $ 27.50 fare without the PRESTO card.

EXPRESS AIR RAIL LINK PART OF THE BIG MOVE

The need for a rapid and reliable airport-to-downtown

express rail service in Toronto was identified decades ago.
Toronto is the only one of the worlds leading business and
financial centres that does not have a dedicated airport
express.
In 2008, The Big Move Transportation Plan identified the
need for:

Union Station is the busiest transportation

facility in Canada, serving 65 million
passengers a year, growing to 130 million
by 2031.

High-order transit connectivity to the Pearson Airport district

from all directions, including a fast transit link to downtown
Toronto

In 2010, Metrolinx was mandated to design, build and launch

the Union Pearson Express (UP Express) in time for the 2015
Pan/Parapan American Games.

passengers annually, growing to 60 million
by 2031.

DESIGNED FOR AIR TRAVELLERS

UP Express will offer a comfortable and stress-free ride, with
specialized guest services and amenities designed for travellers
including airline check-in kiosks, luggage racks, WiFi and up-tothe minute flight information.

Expanded GO services as part of Regional Express Rail will

provide traditional commuter services to downtown from existing
and planned stations on the Kitchener corridor.
