EVALUATION TWO: HOW EFFECTIVE IS THE COMBINATION OF YOUR MAIN PRODUCT AND
ANCILLARY TEXTS?
Our chosen song was picked from the Pop genre, where it also incorporated the 1920s Great Gatsby theme. We
attempted this through the deliberate colour choice of the balloons, gold and silver, they connote classiness and
sophistication. Also we attempted this through Bekkis choice of costume, hair and make-up.
To begin with, I watched the original music video, took as many screenshots as possible and analysed each in
explicit detail. Through in depth research, it was evident that in order to look 1920s, dark purple and red lipstick
was the most important aspect. I watched a numerous amount of make-up tutorials, and followed the basic
conventions upon them. Research into the Great Gatsby era was imperative in order to fully understand what our
music video were too look like. Every detail had to be taken into consideration and further research took place to
find out why the 1920s were to be portrayed as such as rebellious decade. It was the most important decade
for women, due to their drastic change in appearance. They were allowed to wear shorter dresses, vibrant
hairstyles/colours and be more extravagant with their make-up. Females also began to drink, gamble and smoke
which was a different sight to what men were used to. Through this research it became apparent that we didnt
want to incorporate drinking, gambling and smoking into our own music video; we just wanted it to be simple and
classy.
As we all came to the decision of a modern 1920s theme for our music video, I wanted this theme to be
consistent in my other two media products. I researched into 1920s fonts and the results came out in bold,
chunky, block font. I watched another tutorial on how to create a Jazzy Title for the name of the Band KBMA
I followed the step by step guide on exactly how to construct this and it matched with the running 1920s theme.
The Jazzy Title appeared on the Front Cover of the Digipak and the Advert. Similarly, for the Digipak I
researched a Retro Design and constructed that. Although there was a modern 1920s theme running throughout
the three pieces, the genre of the song was still Pop; the Retro Design had bright, eye catching colours
embedded within in to compliment the liveliness most Pop Adverts and Digipaks portray. For example, Maroon 5
and Rihanna use a large amount of vibrant colours to capture their target audiences attention. However, the blur
effect used gave it a vintage look; which reverts back to the modern 1920s theme.
The combination of the main product and the ancillary texts had a lot of thought and consideration put into it. The
two drafts resulted into the final Advert and Digipak. My first draft, of both, was plain and boring and wasnt
having any effect on my target audience. It belonged to the Indie genre instead of Pop. After receiving feedback
it was evident that I had to add more colour and include a design on the Digipak, in order to make it attractive. In
the final, there were improvements made. It was obvious that there had been a Retro Design embedded into the
Digipak, to divert the attention away from the plain panels. The neon pink and blue colours were used in the
design, add an aspect of the Digipak that was eye catching and easily noticeable. As there is a checked pattern
created on the 6 panel Digipak, it will be more aesthetically pleasing to the desired target audience and more
memorable.
In conclusion, the combination of our music video and the ancillary texts produced are effective. Even though
there isnt an obvious, it is effective. There are subtleties within our main product, such as the balloons and the
costumes, hair and make-up of Bekki, that coincide with the Advert and Digipak. The effect used on the font
creates the classy and sophisticated feel that Bekki is in the video. All three products correspond with each other
and it is evident through the research and planning into the 1920s decade itself and our inspired music video.
The process I took in taking a screenshot of every shot in the original music video by MKTO, helped with my
creation of the Advert and Digipak. This enabled me to take aspects from the video and incorporate them into my
Advert and Digipak.
