Brochure
Description:

A two sided (duplex) folding brochure.

Date:

December 6, 2014

Course/Instructor:
COMM130 12
Ben Pingel

Program(s)/Tools:

Adobe InDesign/Adobe Illustrator/Adobe Photoshop

Objectives:

Inform my audience on how to write a decent fiction

novel.

Process:

I set up the document like the tutorial gave us so that

it would have the gridlines all set up so I could use
them. From there I then started adding black boxes
as my backdrops to the titles and headings. I also
added a medium grey border around each section
of the brochure to make it look like the inside areas
were pages on a Word document.
Once I had my pictures all chosen, I threw them
randomly onto each page that they needed to go
on. Once I had the text finalized and put into the
program, that is when I arranged the images to work
right and have the text wrap around them as needed.
I realized once everything was almost done that I
had completely forgotten a logo, so I designed on
and placed it so it would be on the outside bottom
corners of each page.

Letterhead
Description:

Letterhead designed using a custom logo.

Date:

November 8, 2014

Course/Instructor:

Program(s)/Tools:

Adobe Photoshop & InDesign

Objectives:

A letterhead that features a custom piece of art.

Process:

I created the logo using Adobe Photoshop using various

colors and brushes on a single layer. Once the logo was
created, I opened a new two page InDesign document.
On my first page I used the rectangle tool to create the
front and back outline of my business card. I then added
the logo and contact information onto this page. I made
sure that no important information came any closer
than 1/8 inch from the edges. Finally, I took the logo and
flipped it to give it some depth as if it was standing on the
same spot no matter which way the card is viewed..
I decided to make my second page the letterhead. I
positioned the placed logo in the top left corner of my
letterhead and reversed it to face the inside of the page.
I made sure to keep it at least .5 inches away from the
edges. I then added the catchy title next to the logo
and enlarged the A to make it stand out from the rest.
I then typed my contact information into a text box and
positioned it on the right hand side of the letterhead.
I made my name 12pt font to contrast with the 10pt
contact information. I added in a long line across both
the top and bottom of the page with a shadow added to
it for depth and interest. I also added a large black and
white A as a watermark. I kept the opacity to about 3%.

Event Ad
Description:

A full-color ad to describe a charity auction involving

a comic artist.

Date:

October 12, 2014

Course/Instructor:

Program(s)/Tools:
Microsoft Word

Objectives:

This is a false advertisement based off a real event

I had a hand starting earlier this year. Its to raise
money for charity through the sale of original prints.

Process:

I didnt realize I had to use the ad from the previous

assignment, the Scanning one, so I didnt end up
using it. Instead I used a scanned copy of a book
I had on my bookshelf and a photo of the author
found on the internet. From there I inserted the
pictures behind the text so it could be moved and
placed without constraints. I added a border to
them to make them stand out more from the white
backdrop. I used the same technique on the date
and time. I used a different box around the title and
subtitle to fit the comic theme more. From there it
was just using the edge markers to align the text to
fit right.

Montage
Description:

A montage on remembering that death is always

near.

Date:

October 25, 2014

Course/Instructor:
COMM130 12
Ben Pingel

Program(s)/Tools:
Adobe Photoshop

Objectives:

I wanted to make a nod to my favorite video game

that has to deal with remembering that death is
always nearby but that it is not to be feared.

Process:

I cropped the background image to just show part

of the upper section. I grabbed the spirit and placed
him at the top right corner before adding a mask.
With black paint and a 100% opacity, soft-edged
brush, I got rid of the hard lines. With a larger black
brush at 30% opacity and 30% flow, I pressed it
once on a size large enough to cover it completely.
I repeated the process with the masks, but I
separated out the masks onto separate layers to
place them in their own locations. I then started
masking it until it was a gradual blend. I added some
type with one font and I added a layer style (overlay)
on a duplicated layer to make the title more legible. I
added a couple filters to three layers: the spirit, and
two masks.

Imaging
Description:

Demonstrate good photography and image editing

skills. Incorporating color into a poster layout with
original photo.

Date:

Course/Instructor:

Program(s)/Tools:
Adobe Photoshop

Objectives:

I wanted to emphasize the importance of eating

healthy through fruit.

Process:

I originally decided on a monochromatic color

scheme out of the visual focus book, but it
eventually turned into an analagous scheme with
how the text came out. I used a basic digital camera
of my grandmothers to take a picture of a lime on
her trees. I then took it into Photoshop, put a mask
around it to focus on the fruit alone. Then I picked
a light and dark shade of green off the lime itself
to use in two gradients. I then played around with
different gradients and how they were layered
before coming up with this. From there I picked out
fonts that seemed appropriate and curved them
with the warp tool to align with the circles. I then
changed the layer style to make it stand out sharply
from the green.

Flier
Description:

Black & White promotional flier to promote a

graduate leadership conference.

Date:

October 4, 2014

Course/Instructor:
COMM130 12
Ben Pingel

Program(s)/Tools:
Adobe Photoshop

Objectives:

I am trying to reach new graduates who want to have

better leadership skills in business.

Process:

First I made a few sketches of ideas to make the flier

with. After picking one I used it to create layouts in a
variety of programs before creating the final layout
in InDesign. I set Graduate in a large black box to
make it stand out from the white background. I used
the picture I did, where I did, to make it look like she
was referencing the text next to her.

Web Page
Description:

A web page designed to showcase a personally

created logo.

Date:

Program(s)/Tools:

Notepad++, NetBeans IDE 8.0.1 & Photoshop

Objectives:

That my company FOXY Wear Clothing is a 100%

pure fox fur clothing line.

Process:

I am well-versed in HTML and CSS from another

class I am taking this semester. I created this page
initially in NetBeans IDE 8.0.1 to get the formatting
correct so I wouldnt have to deal with that later.
From there I used Notepad++ to make adjustments
on the fly to the page for quick and easy viewing of
said adjustments.
After I marked up all my content and inserted my
image, I attached a pre-made CSS document to
my HTML. I then used the colors from my logo as
the colors for my web page. I found these colors
by opening Photoshop and using the eyedropper
tool. I declared some backup fonts just in case the
viewers browser didnt have these fonts. I also used
margin adjustments around the logo and text so that
they would not be too close to the edge of the web
page.

Logos
Description:

Three logo variations for the same company.

Date:

November 1, 2014

Course/Instructor:
COMM130 12
Ben Pingel

Program(s)/Tools:
Adobe Illustrator

Objectives:

FOXY Wear is a Japan based clothing company

originally called (Kitsune Wear) which when it
went world-wide became FOXY Wear.

Process:

This was both fun and difficult to do. Using the pen
tool was a lot of fun, but the foxes nearly gave me
fits trying to get them to look right. I first outlined
each figure in straight pen lines. Then I came back
and curved it out in specific spots to give it a more
natural feel. Then I worked with colors to see what
would work best and came out with what I did.
