Question 1 How often do you listen to hip/hop music?

How do often you listen to hip/hop

music?
Do not
7% Rarely
13%
Often
47%

Ocassionally
33%

I asked this question to get a wide array of peoples opinion than limiting myself to only people who
listen to hip/hop music only. My result mainly consists of Often and Occasionally. Therefore the
answers from the questionnaire would provide an accurate picture of what my target audience (of
youths 16-19 from Britain) think about hip/hop music and magazines. The issue with this question is
that it may be too ambiguous because there is no specificity to what is classed as often/occasionally
etc.
Question 2 How many musicians can you recognise from this sub-genre?

How many muscians can you

recognise/name from this sub-genre?
Few
13%
Most
47%
Some
40%

The point of this question is to get an idea of whether the people I had asked listen to a wide base of
hip/hop music or just a select group. The results show that they can recognise a great amount thus
for my magazine I would make sure that I dont limit myself to certain groups or certain artists (such
as those that dominate the radio for example Drake, Lil Wayne etc.) This shows that the target
audience are not limited to certain artists and have a broader picture to the genre. Again the
problem with this question is that there is no specificity to the answers for example one persons
view of some may be considered as few to another individual.

Question 3 - Which artist out of the choices below is the most recognised artist in the rap genre?

Which artist out of the choices below is

the most recognised artist in the rap
genre?
Kendrick Lamar
0%

50 Cent
6%

Lil Wayne
19%

Eminem
44%

Kanye West
19%
Jay Z
12%

The point of this question is to have an understanding from the target audience view of who they
think represents the genre to the mainstream public. Therefore for my final magazine I would
include the predominant artist from the results which show that it is Eminem followed by Lil Wayne
& Kanye West in the implementation stages I would consider adding these names to possible cover
lines or the headers/footers this is because it would let me gain a wider target audience since more
people would know them. An issue with this question is that individuals may think someone outside
this list is the person who is the most recognised rapper.
Question 4 -How do you listen to your music?

How do you listen to your music?

CD/Albums

Other
Internet
Sources
34%

Radio
13%

MP3s
40%

The purpose of this question is to have an understanding in the change of technology to the
consumption to music in the youth today. The results show that it is now electronic forms that have
taken over conventional methods of listening to music through 40% choosing MP3s followed by 34%
choosing (other) Internet Sources). This represents the target audience of how accessible music is
for them as they are able to have albums upon albums in their pockets through electronic devices.
This shows that the genre can grow exponentially as people no longer have to travel and pay for
their music since they can use online sources it also means there is a greater competition to stand
out because how easy it is to get your music out there. Through this question I can add possible
articles based around shift in music consumption or ways to take advantage of the Internet to find
music.
Question 5 Would you expect a group or a solo artist on the cover of a hip/hop music magazine?

Solo Arist or Group for

magazine cover?
Group
0%

Solo
100%

The reasoning of this question is to allow me to decide how many people should be on the front
cover. Due to the 100% result of Solo gives a strong impression that a group is not appropriate
therefore with the implementation of the front cover I will only have one person in the shot.

The reason why I asked this question is to get an idea of what rap represents as genre in its content.
This shows that the genre has a materialistic and a drug-induced aesthetic due to high votes for
Drugs/Violence and Money/Cars/Misogyny. The effect of this for my magazine is that I can have
certain articles for the contents page that analyse why this is so popular in the rap genre as from the
questionnaire the target audience is aware that these areas are popular but may not know why.

I had inserted this question into the questionnaire to allow me to have confirmation in my colour
scheme for the final magazine. The results agree with my decision as a split 6-6 vote for Red and
Black.
Question 8 What ethnicity do you think hip/hop music is aimed at more?

This question was asked to have a picture of what ethnicity hip/hop music is represented by thus tell
me what ethnicity the target audience of my final magazine would be based around. The results
show that hip/hop music is considered to be a genre directed for a black audience (100% vote).

I had asked this question to get an idea of what the age the target audience is for the magazine. The
results show that it is aimed at 16-21 olds. With this I can base language at a level that is appropriate
for this age, which is understand, and not too basic that it is not taken seriously.
Question 10 Which impact on life has affected hip/hop music as a genre?

Which impact on life hs affected hip/hop

music most as a genre?
Black President (Obama)

The point of this question was to understand the audiences views of current events role in the
representation of the genre to the public. The results show that the Internet has a huge role in the
shift of hip/hop music. The problem with this question is that because (as all my questions) are
closed multiple answer questions is that the audience may feel as there another option may be more

appropriate but I have selectively chosen to have all multiple answer is to have greater accuracy and
also trends to be made easier as it avoids value judgements during data input.
Question 11 What do you expect in a hip/hop music video?

What do you expect in a hip/hop music

video?
Guns

Half-Naked women

Expensive clothes / jewellery

22%

9%

65%

I had asked this question to have an understanding of what kind of props / what I can apply as a part
of mise-en-scene for the photographs as a part of the magazine. Due to the result being 65% of
drugs it gives me an idea of what kind of aesthetic I would need to make my model have thus looks
appropriate and coherent as a part of the genre.
Question 12 What do you expect rappers to wear?

What do you expect rappers to

wear?
High Fashion

Street wear

7%0% 13%

80%

Designer

High street

This question again was asked for me to have an impression of what kind of aesthetic the model
would need as a part of the photo-shoots in the magazine. Therefore as the results say that they
should wear street wear I would make the model wear street wear since the target audience may
not be aware of high-fashion brands, as it may not be accessible to them financially thus may not
care about it. The choice of clothing also gives a representation of the genre and the audience since
it has a distinct style and not an imitation of other genres styles.
Question 13 What type of content do you think is more suitable in a hip/hop magazine?

What type of content do you think

is more suitable in a hip/hop
magazine?
Gossip

Fashion

Reviews

Information about artists

0%
47%

53%

This question was asked so I know what kind of content I should include into the magazine. It was
roughly a split vote for Information about Artists and Reviews. Due to the 0% in Fashion and 0% in
Gossip shows that the target audience are more interested by music than the material and trivial
areas behind the genre. It also tells us that the genre is very masculine as they have no interest to
feminine characteristics. For my final magazine I would now include reviews of artists that are well
recognised (from previous question) and information about the artists in my double page spread.
Question 14 What do you think encourages people to buy music magazines?

What do you think encourages

people to buy music magazines?

Exclusive Interviews

Due to this question I have now an idea of what kind of promotional ideas I can include to have the
effect of increasing sales as the target audience are appealed by Exclusive Interviews (particularly
attracting a Niche Market of fans to those articles) and free Artist Merchandise.
Question 15 What do you think is appealing to hip/hop music?

What do you think is appealing to hip/hop

I have finally asked this question is so I have a general idea of what kind of topics that can be
included to attract a niche market since the target audience may be more interested in certain
things than others. The results also give me a representation of the music itself as a genre since the
majority vote was for Lyrical Skill (40%), which shows that the music takes some craft, and not
everyone is cut out for being a rapper.
