What were the aims of the artefact?
The entire aim for the Unit F631 was simply to produce a creative
artefact with two planning materials and a script. I decided to create
9 key frames including a location report and screen test notes for
my creative artefact. I had also created a script that explained the
narrative of my film clearly. The whole concept of the 9 key frames
was to have a resembling synopsis which had related themes which
were portrayed in my textual analysis of how fear and isolation is
represented in, The Woman in Black (2012) and Mama (2013). The
synopsis of my 9 key frames is a young teenage girl, Teresa, leaves
school and takes an unusual route home she is then faced with her
own imagination which soon turns out to be a reality. My personal
aim was I wanted to convey themes that both films had represented
clearly such as fear and represent fear through the micro techniques
to make the audience fear for the character constantly.
The creative artefact which I had created was mainly focused to the
ending of the sequence. The nine frames I chose represent up to
two minutes of which included key points of the film which included
action, the photos all had to link to the scene as well as it had to
flow without confusing the audience.
What codes and conventions, identified in the textual
analysis were used in the artefact?
When I had first taken the camera out, I had to choose which codes
and conventions am I going to stick with in my artefact such as, the
colors of costumes and what types of surroundings there should be
in the location. I had used the typical shots that are used in horror
movies such as close ups of the protagonist to demonstrate fear
through Teresas facial expressions. The Asleep at the desk scene
in The Woman in Black mainly represents the theme fear for the
protagonist which was portrayed through the dark colors of the
antagonist costumes and the character positions. I had linked the
conventions from The Woman in Black into my artefact for example,
the colors for the different characters costumes to help signify the
protagonist and antagonist personality. Teresa had brown dyed hair
with a green designed jacket helping to convey to the audience that
she is girly and innocent person whereas The Ripper was dressed in
a full black suit to help display to the audience that he is the
antagonist and evil/creepy.
Following the codes and conventions of Mama, the denotation of the
character positions I had used was many long shots and medium
shots to show the audience the Teresa being confused with her
imagination and reality in an isolated location which help connote

and foreshadow that something bad is bound to happen to Teresa,

linking to Levis Strauss narrative theory if reality vs imagination.
This made it easier to represent fear as the audience saw more of
the location the more isolation was represented to the audience.
The script, which I had created, played an important part of planning
my entire creative artefact, since it had helped me gain a clear
image in my mind on how to set the scene. I was for sure that my
artefact had to be filmed in a location where it looks isolated and
away from people to represent the action. To imagine the scene
clearly I had to focus on a lot of camerawork as I needed to know on
which shots to use and what affect would it have to the audience as
different shots and angles helped to show a different perspective of
Teresa. For instance, many long shots were used to show and
suggest to the audience the surroundings of Teresa illustrating to
the audience on how much power the protagonist has in the setting.
The script also allowed me to think of which type of shots would be
best to show different parts of the scene, for example when Teresa
takes her phone out of her a bag I had simply knew a point of view
would be needed to show who is phoning Teresa and to connote to
the audience on who it could be on the other side of phone call.
How was the planning materials used in the construction of
the artefact?
The planning paperwork of my artefact displayed on how much I
would need to learn and it had helped me gain an idea on what
dates the actors and actresses are available. It had also gave me a
rough idea on how much time would be needed to capture all the
frames. I had given the script to the cast members few weeks before
film allowing my actors/actresses to learn on what they would have
to do. On the day when filming I was very confident that the
actors/actresses performance would be well as looking back to my
screen test notes based on their audition performance allowing me
to see what theyre strengths and weaknesses are. It was essential
that all planning paperwork was with me as it was going to help me
on the day when filming. For example the screen test notes were a
key document, which had ideas on how the actress can perform the
character with portraying similar reactions such as fear from the two
films. The scene starts with the characters leaving the school
implying to the audience that the protagonist is innocent and safe,
then from there onwards Teresa, the protagonist, gets more and
more distanced away from the public. It was essential that I had
chosen my locations wisely since in Mama the setting was used to
present the protagonist seem weak and vulnerable therefore I
wanted my locations to seem as isolated as possible, helping me to
represent fear. The location I had chosen had major advantages as it
wasnt busy nor did it look like an ordinary pathway.

How successfully was the artefact in achieving the aim?

In conclusion, the main aims of the artefact were to produce 9 key
frame which conveyed similar codes and conventions to The Woman
in Black (2012) and Mama (2013). I personally think that my entire
creative artefact had met the aims and purpose of the artefact and I
truly believe that the script I have created was understandable and
clear enough to understand what the different actors and actresses
would have to do in each scene. This is simply because I had
managed and well organized my time on when to film and to
capture my photos allowing myself to have more time in case I
needed to film again. I personally feel I had done a satisfactory job
conveying similar codes and conventions to The Woman in Black
(2012) and Mama (2013) in my 9 key frames.
