2. Education in the Ateneo de Manila
Rizal was sent to Manila 4 months after the
GomBurZa execution accompanied by Paciano.
Francisco did not want to implicate him with the
GomBurZa so they rejected the idea of him going to
Letran (lead by Dominicans and has influence in
Calamba) although he first took his entrance exam
there
At first, the college registrar, Fr. Magin Ferrando,
rejected Rizals admission because:
(a) of late registration
(b) he looked sickly and small for his age
Nonetheless he was admitted to Ateneo with the
help of Manuel Burgos, nephew of the martyred
priest and a friend of Paciano who worked in
Ateneo
Since Mercado, 1st surname of the family had come
under suspicion of the authorities (it was the name
Paciano used when he was studying and working
with Fr. Burgos on whose house he lived), Jose was
first to use the surname Rizal
The students were divided into 2 groups:
1. Roman empire (boarders. Red.)
2. Carthaginian empire (non boarders. Blue.)
*in each empire there were 5 dignitaries: Emperor
(best student), Tribune, Decurion, Centurion, and
Standard-Bearer
