Overview of the Lesson


Lesson Summary:
In this lesson, the students will be practicing their sight words and guided reading.
Lesson Objectives: The students will be able to
a) The students will be able to read the story Carlos and His Teacher and use key details
and illustrations to describe the story.

White board with lines
Hard white boards
Dry erase markers
Pencils

Book: Carlos and His Teacher
Sight word flash cards

The students will learn how to find the main idea and details that support it.

The students will understand the main idea of the book. The students will pick out 4 key

details from the text to support their finding of the main idea.
Assessments (Performance Tasks/Tests/Quizzes Formative/Summative, Informal/Formal)
Assessment: (Reading, Writing, Speaking, Listening)
The students will have to complete a worksheet which asks for 4 key details from the text
that support the main idea. They will be given the option of writing the details and also
drawing a picture of what those details illustrate.
Performance tasks: The students will write the key details and also illustrate the details on a
worksheet.
Informal Assessments: I will be continuously monitoring the students performance in the group.
The students will first need to find the key details in the text and show me either before or after
they have written it. This will reinforce the skill of going back in the text to find key ideas.

Procedures/Transitions

Explanation

a. Reintroduce the book to the students and ask what they think it
will be about (they took a picture walk through the book in the
previous lesson).
b. The students will then get the opportunity to share their ideas of
what they think the story will be about.
Procedures: Each procedure should:
a. The students will be called to the back table for guided reading

group.
b. The students will take out their flash card sight words
c. The students will receive their white boards with lines and begin
to practice their sight words.
d. The students are expected to write a sight word that they are
unfamiliar with 3 times each.
e. All of the flash cards are individualized to each students needs.
f. **This should only take about 5 minutes.
g. Once the students start to finish, they will be able to choose two
books from their guided reading bags to reread until the whole
group is finished.
h. Once all of the students are finished, we will transition into the
book Carlos and His Teacher.
i. The students will be asked what are some things they do with
their teacher (1 answer per student to ensure we are staying on
task).
j. We will then begin reading the book.
k. Each student will get a turn in reading one page until the book is
complete.
l. I will then have a discussion with the students and ask what the

main idea of the story was.


m. I will then introduce the worksheet to the students.
n. **They have completed worksheets like this in the past, so they
are familiar with the set up.
o. I will tell them to use their books to find key details that support
the main idea of the story.
p. The expectations of the students will be to write 4 key details and
draw illustrations correlating to the text.

Activities

As the students complete their worksheet, they will be expected to


explain the 4 key details to me. If there is time left over, they will be
allowed to color their illustrations with crayons.

The lesson will continue throughout the week with this particular book.
They will be working on sight words and guided reading practice
throughout the year to better their reading levels.
