KLANG HISTORY
KLANG HISTORY

The Klang district had appeared earlier than

Malacca. This state was part of the colonial
Sri Vijaya and Majapahit governments. The
origins of its name came from the MonKhmer lamguage Klong which meant
warehouse. Similarly, C.O Blagden explained
Klang as an important port with many
warehouses. While Charles A.Fishr defined
Klang as a canalor waterway. His opinion
was widely accepted given that Klang has
many waterways that are made out of rivers,
including Sg. Klang, Sg. Bertek, Sg. Penang,
Sg. Sementa, Sg. Agas, Sg. Kandas, Sg. Binjai,
Sg. Kapar, Sg. Jati, Sg. Aur, Sg. Rasau, and
Sg. Putus. The name of this river remains
to this day. Klang became important only
after the decline of Kuala Selangor after the
death of Sultan Muhammad (1826- 1857). In
1875, Klang was chosen as the capital city of
Selangor before the capital city was moved
to Kuala Lumpur in 1880. In 1886, Klang was
touted as a beautiful and clean place.

RAJA MAHADI FORT

Built in 1866 by Raja Mahadi Ibni

Almarhum Raja Sulaiman as a fort
to defend Klangs first war waged

A GLANCE OF KLANG VALLEY

Klang Valley An Introduction

lang Valley, or Lembah Klang in Malay, is named after Klang River, which
is associated to the early development of the area as a cluster of tin mining
towns in the late 19th century. Situated in the centre of the west coast of
Peninsular Malaysia, Klang Valley comprises the Federal Territory of Kuala Lumpur
and its adjoining districts in Selangor, namely Gombak, Hulu Langat, Petaling and
Klang, covering an area of 2826 square kilometers. Geographically, it is delineated
by Titiwangsa Mountain Range to the north and east, and the Strait of Malacca to
the west.
Being the most vibrant and lively region in the country, Klang Valley is the heartland
of Malaysias industry and commerce and is always buzzing with vitality. Home to
a great number of migrants from other states within Malaysia and foreign workers
from Indonesia, Myanmar, India and Nepal, it is considered as the fastest growing
region in the country with many more rapidly growing
new towns and yet more is believed to develop in the
near future.

Development of the region took place mainly in

the East-West direction (between Gombak and
Port Klang) but the urban areas surrounding Kuala
Lumpur have since grown south towards the border
with Negeri Sembilan and north towards Rawang.

Roti Canai

alaysians love their food. Being in a

country which has been growing as
multicultural and multi ethnical, the locals
are exposed to a variety of food, blended
with a mixture of all the traditional
dishes of each race. One of these foods is
popularly known as Roti Canai which has
its origins in Indian culture.
Roti literally means bread in Hindi which
is one of Indian languages, as well as in
Malay. The term canai instead is believed
to have several origins; from Chennai,
India where roti canai was served, Channa
which is a dish made of spicy gravy that
is traditionally served as an accompaniment to roti canai, and the word canai that
means to roll out the dough in Malay language.
Roti canai is typical to be prepared circular and flat. There are two known ways of
rolling the dough of the roti, either to twirl the dough until it turns into a very thin
sheet and then fold it into a circular shape or to spread out the dough as thinly as
possible before being folded into the shape. The dough later is grilled with oil.
Sometimes, roti canai is made with the dough being tossed and spun in the air. The
process adds the term flying and turns it into flying roti canai. Some hawkers serve
roti canai after giving it a soft clap with both hands to provide the crispy texture.
Regardless how the dough is rolled out and prepared, roti canai is always served
together with a bowl of mutton curry.
Being a Malaysians favorite, roti canai has been derived into a variety of them to
ensure every ethnic can enjoy it.

Roti Telur

alaysians
love
their food. Being
in a country which
has been growing as
multicultural Telur being
egg as what it means
in Malay language,
this type of roti canai is
prepared together with
some eggs. These eggs
are either included in
the dough while it is
being rolled or while the
dough is being grilled.
This variety is perfect for
those roti canai and egg
lovers.

SPECIAL VIEW FROM WRITER

Roti Tisu
his is probably one of the more creative looking Malaysian
Indian foods, and also the thinnest variety of roti canai
available. Being tisu meaning tissue, it is prepared as thin as
paper and also flaky which requires certain skills of the maker.
Speaking of skills, the maker presents roti tisu to shape like a
hollow cone. Sometimes known as roti helikopter (helicopter
bread), it may be coated with sweet substances such as ice
cream and sweetened creamer, decorated depending on the
makers creativity.

Roti Bawang

Roti Boom

awang literally means onion in

Malay language. The roti is grilled
together with onion cuts being stuffed
inside, suitable for those who enjoy the
taste of onion. Locals claim that it has
the taste resembling murtabak which
is another local dish that is commonly
stuffed with meat and vegetables. This
variety can also be ordered together
with egg which will add more flavor to
the dish, which will be described further
on in this section.

INTRODUCTION

eing given the name like the

sound of an explosion, this roti
is the perfect contrast of Roti Tisu as
it is prepared to be thicker than the
usual roti canai and commonly shaped
round. Due to it being thick, the crust
sometimes can appear darker as it is
grilled longer to ensure the dough
inside is also cooked. The taste is just
the same like the common roti canai.

Roti Planta

lanta is a brand of margarine sold widely in

Malaysia. This variety of roti canai is served
with margarine, usually Planta, stuffed inside
together with some sugar. This resembles the
taste of toast bread with margarine spread and
sprinkled with sugar on top which is known as a
common breakfast meal for locals. For those who
love the greasy buttery taste and not on a diet, this
is a good choice for you.
Roti Sardin

tuffed with sardines, usually those from a can

mixed together with tomato sauce, this version
of roti canai sometimes is served as it is with
sardine sauce given as its side. The sauce, either
stuffed or placed aside, sometimes has the mixture
which resembles to the taste of the local sambal; a
condiment with chili-based sauce. This is prepared
to satisfy those who prefer something spicy.

Roti Pisang

his roti canai is made with banana

which is pisang in Malay language.
The banana is either cut thinly or
mashed into pieces and stuffed inside
the dough while it is being grilled.
Suitable for banana lovers, roti pisang
is delicious with a combination of sweet
and fruity taste.

Roti Sayur

Roti Tofu

reated mainly for vegetarian, this

tofu-stuffed roti canai is sometimes
prepared with onions or spring onions.
The mutton inside the curry is also
replaced to tofu and the taste is just as
amazing as the original. This is definitely
a must-try for vegetarians as well as
those who are planning to cut off some
meat from their diet.

Roti Kaya

C
A

nother vegetarian version, with

sayur which means vegetables,
the roti canai is stuffed with potatoes
or spinach. This resembles the thickness
of roti sardin except there is no meat
included. For those vegie lovers, this is
an ultimate choice of roti canai that is
worth a try.

oconut jam, or known locally as

kaya is a spread made of coconut,
egg and sugar. The creamy texture is
always an added value to roti canai
especially for those who love eating
kaya as well. The kaya is either stuffed
inside a layer of grilled roti canai or
simply spread on top just like how they
do it with toast bread, and sometimes
served together with a scoop of ice
cream.

Roti Durian

14

imilar to roti pisang, this version

is prepared together with the
flesh of the King of Fruits; Durian.
The fruit is either stuffed inside the
dough, served aside together with
the plain roti canai or be turned
into gravy to replace the traditional
mutton curry. No matter how it is
prepared, roti durian is always a
favorite among locals who enjoy the
taste of this exotic fruit.

SPECIAL VIEW FROM WRITER

Roti Telur Bawang

ont be hesitant if you see this in

the menu because it does exist
and you definitely must give it a try. This
roti canai has both egg which is telur
and cheese together. It looks beautiful
with eggs covering it and thick layer
of cheddar cheese inside which can
be seen while youre cutting it. Some
hawker stalls dont provide a menu with
this dish, but most of them will prepare
it upon your request.

Roti Tampal

Roti Milo

INTRODUCTION

Roti Telur Cheese

Similar to roti telur, except this

version has the egg cooked on the
outside rather than the inside. Some
egg lovers prefer to have the egg
yolk half-cooked, depending on their
tastebuds. Creative roti canai makers
will also make the egg look more
appealing on top of the roti canai.

his is specially made for those who

love eating eggs and onions at the
same time. Prepared to give the taste
similar to the breakfast omelet, roti telur
bawang is delicious with its particular
taste which will keep you addicted to
it and wanting more. The eggs or telur
is mixed together with chopped onions
or bawang, just like how an omelet
is prepared. After that, the mixture is
added into the dough while it is grilled.

lthough not so common, some

customers prefer having Milo
powder sprinkled on their roti canai.
Milo is a chocolate and malt powdered
mixture which is typically used as a
drink. Sold widely throughout Malaysia,
Milo is a favorite beverage for breakfast.
A roti canai with Milo is available upon
request at most Indian restaurants in
Malaysia.

SEMENYIH
Broga Hill

SIGHTSEEING

ukit Broga also known

as Bukit Lalang
located at Semenyih
was named after a local
species of grass that grows
rapidly at Semenyih. It took
approximately 40 minutes
from Kuala Lumpur. Why
it is a favorite place for
tourists? The natures of the
hill which filled with weed
grass and while the lower
areas are mostly covered
with oil palm create a calm
and relaxing ambience.
Besides, the sounds of
birds singing are one of
the most common natures
you will definitely enjoy.

You wouldnt want to miss the

hiking adventure up to the hill
to enjoy the panoramic view
from top of the hill. In fact, the
view from the top of Broga Hill
had been described by many as
incredibly beautiful rainforest
view from such a low height.

The hike itself is basically easy,

taking between 20-45 minutes from
the bottom of the hill to the peak of
the hill. There are few adventurous
slopes but need not to be worried
because it is not that difficult to
conquer. There are three peaks in
total, each one rises above the other through a clear trail fringed by the
tall grass at each side. The trails are well marked so that hikers wouldnt get
lost during their hike. It is reminded to not walk around on the grass, as this
species in particular will cause an itchy sensation on bare skin.

Monument of Kuala Kubu Tragedy

hen speaking of Kuala Kubu tragedy, it is often related to the broken dam.
In February 1883, the town was severely flooded due to a dam nearby that
broke, killing many civilians and damaging their homes. Many of the town
buildings were destroyed beyond repair, except a Buddhist temple and a mosque
which you will get to see when youre here. The flood victims included even Sir Cecil
Ranking who was a district officer during the British era. The old town of Kuala Kubu
was known as Broken Dam or Ampang Pecah in Malay and the tragedy has been
named Kuala Kubu Tragedy by the locals. The British, however, decided to build a
new town near the remains of Kuala Kubu, right after the tragedy occurred. This new
town is names Kuala Kubu Bharu, which bharu means new in Malay. A monument
to commemorate the tragedy has also been built here.

Kuala Kubu Bharu Dam

ertak Dam, or officially known as Selangor Dam, is built to replace the old
broken dam that caused the massive flood. There is a river called Pertak River
that flows along the Aborigines village into the dam. Some remains of the old
town are believed to be underwater of it. Rumour says that when Sir Cecil Ranking
was shooting the sacred white crocodile that appeared at the dam in attempt to kill
it, he missed a few shots and the bullets hit the wall of the dam, causing the dam to
break and flood the whole town. No matter how different the stories we get, they
are always related to the legend of the sacred white crocodile. To the locals, this new
dam is precious, as it reminds them of the history of their serene and quaint little
town.

KUALA KUBU BHARU

Monumen Tragedi Kuala Kubu

Empangan Kuala Kubu Bharu

Pakar perternakan
sarang burung telah membangunkan satu
teknik moden iaitu sebuah rumah burung
dibina untuk penternakan burung walit.
Bangunan ini meniru persekitaran gua untuk
menarik walit untuk datang dan membiak di

Road Safety Tips for Beginner Cyclists

Visibility is key:
Wear bright clothes and make sure you stay in a position where
other traffic can see you.
Car doors: When riding alongside parked
cars, be wary of doors flying open in your
path. Slow down and keep your eyes peeled.
Dont hug the kerb: Dont let other traffic
think its safe to squeeze past you in the same
lane its not. Stay a metre from the kerb
and you can be seen more easily from every
direction.
Hook turns:
If youre planning to turn
right, but youre not sure
about the other traffic, make
a hook turn (move to the left,
stop in front of traffic waiting
to go the way you wish to
travel and go straight ahead
when the lights change) to
avoid crossing lanes.

82

Get some company:

If youre new to riding on roads,
get a friend with a bike to show
you how theres always
safety in numbers.

The rules:
The road rules for cyclists vary slightly around
Malaysia. Youre much safer if you know what they are.
Look online to find out what the rules are for you.
Eye contact:
You cant be sure a driver knows youre there until
you make eye contact. Dont be afraid to wave just
to make sure youve been seen.

Coffee Culture

lthough Malaysia is not the birthplace of famous and commercial coffee types in
the world, but Malaysians enjoy their own cup of coffee. We dont have the classic cafes
like those that can be found in New York, Milan or Melbourne, but we love our kopitiams.
Come and join us as we proudly introduce our local coffee to all of the curious coffee
lovers out there.
The local coffee beans are either roasted with margarine or sesame seeds for a smokey
and robust flavor. Some roasters are ancient and can be identified from the black, sootfilled ceilings. No matter where the coffee is served in Malaysia, the locals enjoy having
it with toasts spread with kaya, which is a type of coconut jam as one of the choices for
breakfast.
Approximately 25,000 hectares of land in Malaysia are reserved for coffee agriculture,
especially in Kelantan, Kedah, Terengganu, Selangor, Melaka and Sabah, producing
both the lower grade Robusta and higher grade Arabica coffee plants with 95% of the
crop is Liberica coffee even though it accounts only 2% of the worlds coffee production.
Coffee in kopitiam or mamak restaurants can be enjoyed anytime even though the
local coffee culture is affected by the likes of modern coffee culture such as Starbucks
and Coffee Bean. Local coffee consumers still look for Malaysian coffee no matter how.
Therefore, the local coffee is expanding and being sold depending on the customers
preferences.

Types Of Local Coffee

Kopi
This is a common term for coffee to order when you would
like a cup of white coffee with sweetened condensed milk
rather than the Western version with sugar and creamer.
Kopi is always the favorite among locals as it goes together
with Malaysian breakfast meals such as roti canai, nasi
lemak or kaya toast. It is also typical for the coffee to be
prepared with the condensed milk still at the bottom of
WKHFXSZKHUHWKHGULQNHUZLOOUVWKDYHWRVWLUWKHFXSDQG
mixed the coffee themselves. This type is served hot as well as
cold with ice cubes, depending on the customers order.

Kopi-O
Locals love black coffee too. Kopi-O is a version of coffee
with only sugar and without any milk or its substances.
Being served either hot or cold, this is a perfect choice
for coffee lovers who do not prefer the taste of milk added
in it. It can be a little bit bitter for some people, though,
depending on the place the coffee beans were produced
and how they were roasted.

Kopi Kosong
With kosong meaning
zero, the coffee is
served without sugar
and not even milk. This
is dedicated for the true
coffee lovers who enjoy
the pure taste of coffee.
If youre on a diet or a
vegetarian, then this is a
choice of coffee for you.

Kopi C

86

Originated from Hainanese, C which

resembles the sound of Xi in their
language which means fresh is to
identify the usage of fresh evaporated
milk inside the coffee rather than the
condensed milk which is used in the
common kopi. This version of coffee
can be chosen from sweetened to
unsweetened as well as hot and cold.

Doi Chaang

Originated from Chiang Rai province of

northern Thailand, this gourmet coffee is
prepared from roasted organic Arabica
coffee beans and the skills for cultivating
the plants have been passed to Malaysia.
Although the price can be higher, once
you encounter a restaurant that serves
this premium coffee in the menu, you must
GHQLWHO\ QRW PLVV WKH FKDQFH WR JLYH LW
a try. Just like any other beverages, this
coffee comes with several other preferences
depending on the customers such as latte,
iced and much more.

Kopi Luwak

SPECIAL FEATURE: COFFE CULTURE

Specialty Coffee in Malaysia

Produced in Indonesia, this coffee is considered exotic

and the most famous in the whole world. The coffee
beans are gathered from excrement of civets or luwak
which are naturally attracted to ripe fruits and consume
the coffee berries. The coffee beans, being harvested
in small batches, are one of the most expensive foods
ever existed. After harvested, the beans are cleaned
well and they will go through the usual
process until they become a drink. It is indeed a kind of coffee
that you would be hesitant to try, but dont worry, the taste
will not disappoint you.

Ipoh White Coffee

A coffee which originated from the city Ipoh in Perak,

Malaysia, is roasted with only palm-oil margarine
without any sugar or wheat as traditionally done for
roasting the common Malaysian black coffee. The
coffee comes out in a less dark roast, resulting in the
generic term of Ipoh white coffee which has nothing
to do with its color, but more towards how it was
roasted. Due to its popularity, Ipoh white coffee can
be found almost in any coffee shops and it has also
been produced premixed.

Commercial Coffee

The modern coffee, evolving from locals

who went abroad to study about coffee
and returned to the country as baristas to
introduce the coffee they have experienced
overseas, has become one of the locals
favorites. It appears into variations such as
espresso, latte, cappuccino and much more.
Other than being commercialized by foreign
brands such as Starbucks and Coffee Bean,
local cafes are also growing and serving
coffee that is roasted and brewed in their
own cafes, playing catch up with one another
trying to retain their customers.

Eating Out

A big delight in every bite

Malaysian Food is not one particular distinction of food but a culinary

diversity originating from its multi-ethnic population of Malay, Indian
and Chinese. There are also cuisines that have evolved from the
meeting of cultures notably those of the Nyonya and Indian Muslims
communities. Western cuisines, especially Continental and Mediterranean fare, are
also available in the major cities. Indeed, Malaysia as a meeting place of both eastern
and western cultures has produced a most diverse culinary melting pot. A brief look
into the past and how this multi-ethnic country came to be, is essential in order to
comprehend how such a cosmic array of food, has now come to be known all over
the world as Malaysian Food. Presented here are some of the various delicious and
popular dishes from this rainbow of gastronomic spectrum, with pictures from each
unique ethnic kitchen.

ooking for a Casual French dining experience!!! Look no further as our food review

Located at Lorong Rahim Kajai 13, the restaurant is run by Managing Partner
Hairenna Othman and Chef Patron Christopher Yee. With their combine experience,

Chef Christopher and Hairenna started us off with Moules Marinierre which is mussels
cooked in white wine, Escargot au beurre baked snails with butter and herbs, Salad
Nicoise a lovely dish of fresh greens served with tomatoes, quail eggs and tuna. We
then was served our main course Beef Bourguinon which is a slow cooked beef in red
wine served with mash potatoes and vegetables, lastly we had the Confit de canard
which is the star of the meal. This dish is a duck confit served with fondant potatoes
with long beans and salad. For our dessert, we had Malibu Parfait and their famous
Crme Brulee.

FOOD COURT
Food Court
Dining in KL would not be complete, of course if you do not try what this city is
famous for its street food at food court. Food is available at almost every corner of
KLs roads, plus plenty of food bazaars, night markets and hawker centres. However,
with the weather being what it is, hawker centres and food courts in KLs shopping
malls play their much- appreciated part. In these comfortable air conditioned
spaces, you can enjoy almost all examples of street food in hygienic conditions.

REASONS TO CHOOSE MALAYSIA AS HEALTHCARE DESTINATION

The technology of medical care in Malaysia has

improved drastically over the years with up to date
equipment on par with developed countries such
as United States of America and United Kingdom.
The standard of quality and services by those in
the industry also has been improved to meet the
standards of international health care. Doctors in
Malaysia are well trained with a huge number of them
being trained in renowned institutions overseas.

HEALTH & BAUTY

Malaysia has been one of the most viable options for those seeking health care in
recent years. Based on quality and affordability of medical care as well as
receptiveness to foreign investment, Malaysia is ranked third behind Panama which
managed to clinch the top spot and Brazil at number 2. Over the years, the number of
foreigners seeking healthcare services in Malaysia has grown from 75,210 patients in
2001 to 296,687 in 2006. In 2006 alone, RM203.66 million in revenue was generated.

Due to the intense competition between health care

institutions prices have been very affordable. In fact, the
overall rates are very much cheaper as compared
to other countries. Regardless, Malaysia is still able
to provide good quality service equally as well as
developed countries. Besides that, the varieties of
packages are also there to give value added service
to patients seeking to kill two birds with one stone.
One main key point as to why Malaysia will always remain
a favourite is also because of our multi cultural society.
Malaysia is generally a Muslim country. Therefore, halal food
and services are widely available throughout the country,
thus allowing Muslim patients to travel here with ease.
Furthermore, in Malaysia, unlike most countries in the region, hospitals and health care
institutions here are mostly privatised. This in turn, gives an upper hand as compared to
other countries. The quality and standards of services here are quality assured and premium
without waiting lists.

DENTAL

oday, people are combining a holiday to Malaysia with affordable dental

care due to prices being too out of reach of many in European and North
American countries. Malaysia is a multiethnic nation which offers dental
surgeries and English-speaking dentists, well-qualified to cater to all of your
dental needs, cosmetic or otherwise.
The neighboring countries of Malaysia, too, offer dental treatments but Malaysia
is nevertheless a regional leader in dental surgery due to numerous clinics here
that provides dental care tailored to international patients. Although its main
appeal is the affordable prices, Malaysia offers modern clinics, latest treatments
and up-to-date equipment.
Kuala Lumpur is the hub of dental care in Malaysia where hundreds of dentists
practice, but clinics serving dental tourists are also available in most major holiday
destinations such as Penang and Melaka. Since
most dental procedures have a short recovery
period, tourists can combine the treatment with
a holiday in this multicultural country.
Many dental clinics in Malaysia also help dental
tourists with their travel plans including flights,
airport pickups, sightseeing and accommodation.
The appointments can
be arranged around their
vacation to suit their needs.
Malaysia is the ideal
destination for dental
tourism in Asia.
