Liqueurs
WHAT ARE LIQUEURS?
DIFFERENT TYPES OF LIQUEURS
FLAVOR-TASTE-COLOUR-
A liqueur is an alcoholic beverage that has been flavored with fruit, herbs, nuts, spices, flowers, or cream and
bottled with added sugar. Liqueurs are typically quite sweet; they are usually not aged for long but may have
resting periods during their production to allow flavors to marry
Liqueurs date back centuries and are historical descendants of herbal medicines, often those prepared by monks,
TWO METHODS
Maceration or cold method
The object is to obtain the aromatic (pleasant odors) substances from the raw materials. This method can take
as long as a year In basic terms, the raw material is immersed in the raw alcohol until that Spirit absorbs the
flavor. The final product is called a 'Tincture' and forms the base for the Liqueur.
Infusion or heat method-distillation process
Similar to Maceration in that the flavoring agent is 'Steeped' or soaked in a Base Alcohol. The difference is
that the Alcohol is heated. This heat is maintained for several days and the result is a more flavorful and less
expensive product. (herbs, peels, roots are used to extract oil, flavors and aromas)
HOW IT IS SERVED
Served in many ways, poured over ice, with coffee, mixed with cream or other mixers to create cocktails, etc.
They are often served with or after a dessert. Liqueurs are also used in cooking
Layered drinks made by floating different-coloured liqueurs in separate layers are attractive. Each liqueur is poured
slowly into a glass over the back of a spoon or down a glass rod, so that the liquids of different densities remain
unmixed, creating a striped effect.
