SPHERICAL SEGMENT

What is a spherical segment?

A spherical segment is the solid defined by cutting a sphere with a

pair of parallel planes. It can be thought of as a spherical cap with the top
truncated, and so it corresponds to a spherical frustum. The surface of the
spherical segment (excluding the bases) is called a zone. However, Harris
and Stocker (1998) use the term "spherical segment" as a synonym for
spherical cap and "zone" for what is here called a spherical segment.

Types Spherical Segments

Parts of the spherical Segment

Call the radius of the sphere and the height of the segment (the distance
from the plane to the top of sphere) . Let the radii of the lower and
upper bases be denoted and , respectively. Call the distance from the
center to the start of the segment , and the height from the bottom to
the top of the segment . Call the radius parallel to the segment , and
the height above the center .

AREA OF THE SURFACE OF SPHERICAL SEGMENT

The surface area of a spherical segment is equal to the area of the

zone plus the sum of the areas of their bases.

Area of the segment = Area of the Zone + Area of the two bases
A segment = A zone + A base1+ A base2 ⇒ A segment = 2π Rh+π a2+π b2

A segment = π (2Rh+a2+b2)

The surface area of a spherical segment is equal to the area of the

zone plus area of the base.

Area of the segment = Area of the Zone + Area of the base

A segment = A zone + A base1+ ⇒ A segment = 2π Rh+π a2

A segment = π (2Rh+a2+)

Defining Terms

• Bases – are the sections made by the parallel planes

• Segment of one base – If one parallel planes is tangent to the
sphere
• Segment of two bases – if both the planes are cut within the sphere
and it is not tangent to the sphere.
• Altitude – is the perpendicular distance between the bases.
