Aker Arctic

Aker ARC 106 Baltic multipurpose

icebreaker and offshore construction vessel

Wheel house

Forecastle deck
The vessel is a multipurpose
icebreaker for year round operation
in the Baltic Sea and the Gulf of
Finland.
The tasks of the vessel as a Baltic
icebreaker are:
operate as an escort icebreaker
contact towing for small and medium
sized assisted vessels
The vessel shall also be equipped
with the following additional
functions:
oil combating vessel, with DNV
notation OILREC or equal
firefighting vessel, with DNV
notation FireFighter I or equal
rendering assistance to ship in ice
and open water during
emergency and rescue operations

The Vessel will also be prepared for

offshore duties by partly being
equipped or partly prepared for later
outfitting for the oil industry.
The vessels is to be designed for
year round operation in areas where
oil rigs are located, both in open and
icy waters but excluding polar and
multi year ice areas.
The vessel is based on the double
acting principles, Aker Arctic DAS ,
in lighter ice conditions and open
water conditions the vessel moves
ahead and in severe ice conditions,
in particular in ridged ice fields
astern, resulting in a very versatile
and ice capable vessel. Repeated
ramming is foreseen in the ahead
mode. The DAS operating mode will
be considered in the bridge layout,

providing good visibility and access

to command posts when sailing
ahead and astern, as well as over
the cargo deck.
The vessel is designed to be built
environmentally friendly, e.g.
according to DNVs CLEAN
requirements. The environmental
conditions in the icy environment
have been specially considered.
The vessel is double hulled where
necessary, with forecastle and
accommodation forward.
The exterior of the vessel is
designed for minimum ice accretion
and also all exterior working
positions are protected as far as
possible.
