Chapter F3: Effects of Heat Energy
Remedial Notes

Name: _____________________________ ( ) Date: _________________

Class: ___________

1. What effect does heat energy have on matter?

When an object is heated, it ____________. Conversely, the object will ____________ upon cooling.

Two sets apparatus that can be used to observe the expansion and contraction of solids are the

____________ ____________ and gauge, and the ____________ ____________ and ring.

Of the three states of matter, ____________, ____________, ____________, the state of matter that

expands the most when heated, or contracts the most when cooled is the ____________ state.

2. Explaining expansion using the particulate model

Why do objects expand when heated?

All matter is made up of atoms or molecules, collectively known as particles. When an object is

____________, the particles gain energy and move ____________ ____________. This movement of

particles ____________ the volume of the object.

3. Bimetallic strip

As the name suggests, a bimetallic strip is an object made up of ____________ different

____________ joined or welded together. Examples of the metals are ____________/____________

and ____________/____________.

Sketch of a bimetallic strip:

The bimetallic strip works on the principle of unequal expansion and contraction when objects are

heated or cooled respectively. When it is heated, one metal expands more than the other, causing the

strip to bend. Similarly, when the strip is cooled, one metal contracts more than the other, causing the

strip to bend in the other direction.

Bimetallic strips are used to control the temperature in some electrical appliances such as

refrigerators and air-conditioners.

4. Examples of expansion and contraction around us

Railway lines, Concrete roads and paths

Both the railway lines and concrete roads and paths expand in hot weather. Small gaps are found in the

rails and concrete surfaces to allow for ____________ in the hot weather. If there are no gaps, the lines

and the paths can ____________ or ____________.

Overhead wires

Overhead wires are left ____________ such that when ____________ happens in cold weather, the

wires do not become too tight and break.

Pipes carrying hot water or steam

Diagram:

Pipes carrying hot water or steam include ‘____________ ____________’ in them which allows for

____________ when hot water passes through them. Without these loops, the force produced by the

expanding pipes can cause the pipes to buckle and break.
